In the wrestling world, maintaining a healthy marriage isn’t the easiest thing to do. Wrestlers are on the road for two hundred, and in WWE’s world three hundred plus days which means the amount of time they see their significant other is severely limited.
As a result, it isn’t exactly uncommon to see a wrestler get divorced. But, there are divorces that are amicable and then there are those that are unharmonious and downright ugly. For instance, The Rock was first married to a woman named Dany Garcia from 1997 until 2007. Once the couple split, they remained such good friends that Garcia currently serves as The Rock’s business partner along with sharing responsibilities in parenting their daughter, Simone.
Unfortunately, not all divorces are as hunky-dory as The Rock’s and Garcia’s. On the contrary, there are those divorces that are quite confrontational. Here, we take a look at fifteen ugly divorces that wrestlers had.
15. Randy Orton
On November 15th, 2015 the “Apex Predator” Randy Orton was married for the second time to a woman named Kimberly Kessler. The two welcomed a baby girl into the world a year later in November of 2016 named Brooklyn Rose Orton. Orton’s first marriage lasted five years and was to a woman named Samantha Speno. The banter between Orton and Speno during divorce proceedings wasn’t visible in the media as the two did well to stay out of the spotlight despite Orton’s star appeal. However, this doesn’t mean it wasn’t ugly for Orton’s pockets. In the settlement Speno received $4,500 monthly for child support, full custody of their daughter (with Orton receiving visitation rights), a bank account worth $654,317, her 2013 Infiniti and all of her jewelry which includes both her wedding and engagement ring. Whoever said money can’t buy happiness?
14. Charlotte Flair
At just thirty years old, Charlotte is giving her old man Ric a run for his money in the divorce department as she’s already racked up two divorces. In case you were wondering, Ric has four divorces to his name. Charlotte’s also not a stranger to failed relationships as she was arrested in 2008 when she assaulted a police officer as a result of being involved in an altercation with her boyfriend at the time. In 2013, Charlotte wed TNA talent Bram. In 2015, Charlotte and Bram divorced. In their settlement agreement the documents state, “each party waives any right, title, or interest in the wrestling career of the other party, including but not limited to all entertainment, promotions, movies advertising, etc, now and in the future”. The two don’t seem to want to have anything to do with each other and are equally focused on protecting their own brand.
13. Kurt Angle
Two years after he had won an Olympic Gold Medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, Kurt Angle got married to Karen Smedley. The two remained married for over a decade and have a daughter, Kyra, born in 2002 and a son, Kody, born in 2006. In September of 2008, Smedley filed for divorce from Angle. While Smedley filed for divorce in 2008, the writing may have been on the wall is early is 2007. Numerous reports indicated that TNA’s Jeff Jarrett and Smedley were seeing each other in 2007 after Jarrett’s wife had passed away. If things couldn’t get more awkward, TNA actually played up a storyline in 2007 which featured Smeldey playing the victim of emotional abuse via Angle. In August of 2010, Smedley and Jarrett tied the knot and remain together to this day. It must’ve been pretty awkward for Angle to see the two together during his time in TNA.
12. Ric Flair
Ric Flair’s no stranger to marriage and he’s no stranger to divorce either. The Nature boy first walked down the aisle in 1971, with the marriage ending twelve years later in 1983. He was married to his second wife for almost double that, as the two were married for twenty-three years. His third marriage only lasted three years and his most recent marriage lasted four years. Flair’s forth wife, Jacqueline Beems cited the reason for the two’s divorce as Flair’s acts of illicit sexual behaviors according to TMZ. The divorce documents further state, “husband has had numerous intimate relationships with other women during the parties’ marriage, to the embarrassment and humiliation of wife”. Some people never learn and the then sixty-three year old Flair lived his sixties just like he lived his twenties- young, wild and free.
Edge is currently married to Beth Phoenix and the two have a three year old daughter as well as a three month old daughter. While Edge’s current marriage may be working out well (on the surface, at least), this isn’t to say the same about his other marriages. In fact, Edge’s marriage to Phoenix is actually his third. Edge’s second marriage was to a woman named Lisa Ortiz whom he married in November 2004; this was only eight months after he had divorced his first wife! Billed as “The Ultimate Opportunist”, Edge began an affair with WWE’s Lita during his marriage with Ortiz. To make matters worse, Lita had been seeing Matt Hardy for six years, and Edge and Hardy were close friends. In February of 2005, the affair became public knowledge and Edge and Ortiz were divorced in November of that year. Edge’s affair ruined his marriage, a longtime relationship between Hardy and Lita, and as he puts it, a “close friendship” with Hardy.
10. “Macho Man” Randy Savage
Everyone’s favorite wrestling couple in the late 1980s to the early 1990s was “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. The two had actually wed in 1984 when they were a part of International Championship Wrestling (ICW). The two became household names when they made the transition to WWE. There isn’t a concrete reason as to why the two eventually ended up divorcing in 1992, but the common theory is that it was due to Savage’s belief that Elizabeth had cheated on him. Elizabeth passed away in 2003 by way of a drug overdose and Savage passed in 2011 at the hands of a heart attack while behind the wheel.
9. Bret Hart
Bret “The Hitman” Hart is currently on his third marriage to a woman named Stephanie Washington whom he married in 2010. Prior to marrying Washington he was married for three years from 2004-2007 to a woman named Cinzia Rota. Prior to both Washington and Rota, Hart was married for twenty years to Julie Smadu. The marriage to Smadu is not only Hart’s longest, but also his most prolific. By Hart’s own admission he wasn’t a saint during the marriage and in his autobiography, Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling, he revealed that his life on the road was responsible for him being unable to be a faithful husband as he engaged in multiple affairs. However, while Hart’s writing details his wrongdoings, his wife’s own book, Hart Strings: My Life with Bret and the Hart Family, details from her viewpoint how troubling the marriage between the couple was.
8. The Undertaker
The Undertaker is currently in his third marriage to former WWE Diva Michelle McCool who is currently involved in the battle of her life due to being diagnosed with skin cancer in August of 2016. McCool and the “Deadman” have been married since 2010 and they have one child together. Prior to marrying McCool, ‘Taker was married to Sara Frank from 2000 until 2006. The name Sara may seem familiar to WWE viewers of the early 2000s as Sara was an on screen character for a short period of time; she’s most notable for being stalked by Diamond Dallas Page. Another thing fans may remember about Sara is that ‘Taker used to sport a large tattoo of her name on his neck that was removed once the two divorced. To tattoo a person’s name is one thing; to tattoo a person’s name on one’s neck is another. The “Phenom” was likely very into Sara at one point, which leaves this one up for speculation as to whether or not the two had a messy divorce.
“The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust” and currently known as just Goldust was married to former WWE Diva Terri Runnels from 1993-1999, but the two actually met when they were both employed by the Atlanta, Georgia based promotion, WCW. Runnels gave birth to a daughter named Dakota in 1994, who is the couple’s only child. In 1999, the couple parted ways and as Runnels tells it, the late great Dusty Rhodes, Goldust’s father played a pivotal role in the couple’s split. Moreover, Runnels claims that Rhodes spread unappealing rumors about her that included that she was money hungry and that she had cheated on Goldust during their marriage. Despite Rhodes possibly playing a role in the divorce, Runnels said the following about Goldust in 2014 on Reddit, “Always massive respect and love based on the fact that we have a daughter together”. It’s refreshing to see the two working together in raising their daughter despite differences that may or may not exist today.
6. John Cena
In 2009, The Rock’s favorite Fruity Pebble John Cena tied the knot with his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Huberdeau. The marriage only lasted three years as Cena filed for divorce in 2012. Cena’s divorce filing had come as a surprise to Huberdeau, despite the frequent arguing the two had experienced in the early quarter of the year (pertaining to home repairs), she had thought the two had put their respective differences behind them. Not only was Huberdeau caught off guard, but she was appalled as well. Huberdeau attempted to get the couple’s prenuptial agreement voided as she believed Cena had been unfaithful on multiple occasions (just ask Kenny Doane and Mickie James about it!). While the divorce began ugly in May, it was settled rather quickly, just two months later in July of 2012. Huberdeau’s attorney, Raymond Raffool stated in July, “all matters [in the divorce] have been settled and resolved amicably”.
If you look up the word “scumbag” in the dictionary and a photograph of Batista isn’t present, please notify the publisher at once! From 1998 to 2006 Batista was married to a woman named Angie Bautista. Angie had developed ovarian cancer during the couple’s marriage and this placed an immense amount of stress on Angie mentally, physically, emotionally and sexually, with the latter being what was most important to Batista. In his 2008 autobiography Batista: Unleashed, the former WWE superstar turned Hollywood actor admitted that during his marriage to Angie he had cheated on her with groupies frequently even claiming that he had engaged in threesomes as well. The sheer amount of agony Angie underwent with her battle with cancer was enough, the amount of agony her husband Batista caused her was unnecessary and uncalled for.
4. Shawn Michaels
Not many are aware of the fact that prior to marrying Rebecca Curci (better known to wrestling fans as WCW Nitro Girl Whisper), Shawn Michaels was married for six years to a woman named Theresa Wood from 1988 to 1994. However, while Michaels describes the divorce between the two as amicable, this is a little hard to imagine considering the type of person Michaels was during the two’s marriage. Michaels had engaged in a relationship with WWE Diva Sunny that was a secret to absolutely nobody. However, many believe Michaels was involved with Sunny during his marriage to Wood which would categorize it as an affair. Michaels also gained quite the reputation as a womanizer in his early days in the nineties. Wood’s remained mum on the two’s divorce so this is nothing more than speculation. Fortunately, Michaels seems to be a changed man today as he describes himself as a Christian who has found God.
3. Kevin Sullivan
If you’re Kevin Sullivan the booker (as he was in WCW), you excelled at your job. If you’re Kevin Sullivan the man outside of his booking job, you set yourself up for colossal failure. In 1986, Kevin Sullivan married a woman named Nancy Daus. During his time in WCW as a booker, Sullivan was also a competitor. He came up with a storyline that would have Nancy Daus leave him for Chris Benoit. Sullivan proposed that Benoit and Daus spend frequent time together by traveling together and sharing hotels in order for the storyline to look more organic as opposed to artificial. It worked so well that Sullivan and Daus divorced in 1998. In 2000, Benoit and Daus tied the knot. Despite being cordial towards Benoit, Sullivan blames Benoit for his split with Daus.
2. Hulk Hogan
What you gonna do brother, when your wife takes 70 percent of your assets from you? Well, that’s exactly what happened to Hulk Hogan. Hogan had married Linda Claridge in 1983 and Claridge filed for divorce in 2007. Claridge’s reason behind filing the suit was a woman by the name of Christiane Plante, whom had worked with Brooke Hogan on her 2006 album, claiming that she and the Hulkster had been involved in an affair. Claridge received the lion’s share of the couple’s assets in the divorce as she walked away with $7.44 million of the couple’s $10.41 million dollars that was present in their bank accounts. In addition to the whopping amount of money Claridge received, she also walked away with multiple vehicles such as a Cadillac Escalade, a Mercedes Benz and a Rolls Royce.
1. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
Debra Marshall was synonymous with the word “puppies” during her time in the WWE as Jerry “The King” Lawler would frequently shout the term at Marshall whenever she appeared on WWE programming. She was also the wife of one of the biggest superstars in the history of the company, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. In their second year of marriage, Marshall phoned the police alleging that she was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her husband, Austin. Police reports indicated that Marshall sustained injuries to her back cheek, eye and shoulder. Austin was arrested two months later, in August, for the incident. Austin filed for divorce in July of 2002, a tad over a month after the incident and the divorce was finalized in February of 2003.
