Jon Moxley is a near two-decade veteran of the wrestling business, with likely many more years still to come, with him in the prime of his career right now. He was a big name on the independent scene before signing with WWE, becoming Dean Ambrose, heightening his profile before his eventual move to AEW, where he has put forth some of the best work of his career, whilst also working occasionally in NJPW, and elsewhere on the independent circuit.

When looking at the best matches of his career, the ratings on Cagematch.net are a strong indication of the superior ones, with his list of classics only getting longer as time goes on.

10 Evolution Vs The Shield, 8.76

Evolution v The Shield Extreme Rules 2014 Cropped

In 2014, Evolution & The Shield had a pair of strong matches which served to put over the younger stars, but the better of the two came at Extreme Rules. This match gradually built up in intensity and pace, resulting in a chaotic final few minutes, packed with big moments.

Randy Orton, Batista, and Triple H did their job of making the trio of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns look like stars by the end of the match. This is what most veteran vs promising young star matches should look like.

9 The Shield Vs Team Hell No & Randy Orton, 8.78

The Shield vs Randy Orton & Team Hell No

What initially felt like a potential throwaway match on a taped 2013 episode of Smackdown turned into one of The Shield’s best matches. In the months building up, the tensions between all six men were ramped up, making this quite personal. With the names involved, it is no surprise that it turned out to be great.

The key that made this match so special was that it marked the first time The Shield had been beaten in a six-man tag team match. Doing it on Smackdown, which wasn’t heavily featured, was questionable, but it was certainly a must-see match in hindsight.

8 Jon Moxley Vs Kenny Omega, 8.92

Jon Moxley Vs Kenny Omega

On AEW’s first PPV since making their TV debut, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega main evented proceedings in a Lights Out match, and the physicality and violence lived up to the gimmick.

Whether it be barbed wire, broken glass, or the exposed wooden structure of the ring, the two men used all they could to produce a brutal brawl, with these two being a pair of the top stars that would help carry AEW forwards for the next couple years as champions.

7 Jon Moxley Vs Will Ospreay, 8.94

Despite two completely different wrestling styles, these two meshed together perfectly in one hell of a match at NJPW’s Windy City Riot event. It was a bloody, intense brawl with the two men trying to top each other with crazy manoeuvres.

With this match being very new, there is a chance that it eventually falls out of the top 10 on Cagematch.net, but it was still great. The only downside came with an evidently botched finish, but the match preceding it more than made up for it.

6 Dean Ambrose Vs William Regal, 9.04

Dean Ambrose vs William Regal WWE FCW

FCW was far from what developmental would eventually become with NXT, but the feud between Ambrose and Regal was a huge highlight, which makes it all the more appropriate that they are now aligned in AEW.

Other matches of theirs make a strong contender for being the best of the series, but in terms of Cagematch.net, this one is the highest rated. It was technical, physical, and the story was told very well. The non-finish was a shame, but it played into the wider story of their rivalry.

5 Seth Rollins Vs Dean Ambrose, 9.08

Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins FCW

Ambrose & Rollins are two men who will forever be associated, both on and offscreen, and it stemmed back to their time together in FCW, where they wrestled some great matches, including this 30-minute Iron Match.

The two men went back and forth, and though they weren’t as polished as they are today as performers, the grittiness and imperfection worked well with their animosity against one another. This may still be the best match they had against one another, even with facing each other several times on WWE’s main roster.

4 Jon Moxley Vs Wheeler Yuta, 9.18

Jon Moxley vs Wheeler Yuta AEW

In what is an early contender for AEW’s 2022 match of the year, Moxley and Yuta put on an incredible match. This has proven to be a star-making performance for Yuta, whose stock rose exponentially after this match, with his resilience and survival through the fight gaining him a lot of fans.

A lot of credit must go to Moxley, who was happy to let Yuta kick out of his finisher on two occasions, giving up a lot of offense in order in help to establish the younger name. The success of this match is testament to how much of a star Moxley has become.

3 Jon Moxley Vs Tomohiro Ishii, 9.21

Jon Moxley vs Tomohiro Ishii NJPW G1 Climax

After leaving WWE, Moxley set his sights on everywhere else in the wrestling world, with one of those pitstops being NJPW, and more importantly, the G1 Climax in 2019. One of the best matches of the entire tournament came when Moxley battled Ishii.

These two men beat the hell out of each other in what felt like more of a brawl than a match, and it truly showed that Moxley was a different animal to what “Dean Ambrose” was in WWE. This was twenty minutes of all-out war, and it is still perhaps Moxley best singles match of his entire career.

2 The Shield Vs The Wyatt Family, 9.30

The Shield Vs The Wyatt Family

Despite both teams being heel at the time, the WWE Universe was electric when the two top trio factions came face to face for the first time. With how well they’d been built, this felt like a dream match, which are sometimes hard to find in more modern-day WWE.

The Elimination Chamber PPV in 2014 hosted a wild, chaotic, and wonderfully crafted battle between these two teams, which helped to highlight all six men involved.

1 The Shield Vs Team Hell No & Ryback, 9.30

The Shield vs Ryback & Team Hell No

The Shield’s debut match in WWE may be the best debut in wrestling history, and though that seems like a huge statement to make, the fact that this match still tops Moxley’s Cagematch.net profile is an indication of how good this was.

This was a wild match, showcasing exactly what The Shield was all about, and it put three names on the map who would help carry professional wrestling for the next decade.
