The AEW tag team division has been one of the major highlights of the company since day one, with a huge focus on that form of wrestling, with the Tag Team Championships being made to feel hugely important, and on the level of other world titles.

The quality of tag team wrestling has been stellar, with the promotion hosting perhaps the best tag team division on the planet. Compared to the Men’s and Women’s World Titles, the tag belts have been defended more often, with the first 10 championship matches happening in a quicker time frame, though still not overly regular, to ensure that the matches feel special. There has been a range in quality, with some matches in GOAT contention, whilst others have been a little more than decent.

10 Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs Jimmy Havoc & Kip Sabian, AEW Dynamite, 28th May 2020

Hangman Page and Kip Sabian AEW

After not defending the titles for a few months, Page & Omega went up against Jimmy Havoc and Kip Sabian, who provided zero realistic threat. The only true positive of this match was that it gave the champions another win on their record.

Aside from that, this wasn’t too great, with the challengers not feeling like worthy opponents. The action was fine, but it lacked true interest.

9 SCU Vs Lucha Brothers Vs Private Party, AEW Full Gear, 9th November 2019

SCU vs Lucha Brothers vs Private Party AEW

On paper, this match had the potential to be all-out car crash which stole the show. However, in execution, it was disjointed and messy at times. Some of the athleticism was good, but many of the spots felt overly choreographed, which damaged the quality.

It was still fun, fast-paced, and had nice moments, but it could have been a lot better than it ended up being. There wasn’t too much of a storyline going in, which also may have affected the heat during the contest, even with the talented teams involved.

8 SCU Vs Young Bucks, AEW Dynamite, 18th December 2019

Young Bucks vs SCU AEW Dynamite

It isn’t often that the Young Bucks don’t steal the show, but this match was an occasion where things just didn’t click for them. The match itself was fine, but when compared to other Bucks matches, it was a let-down.

At just around 10 minutes, the four men didn’t have enough time to develop a strong story, and it could be argued that the Bucks shouldn’t have received a title shot so soon in AEW.

7 Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs Natural Nightmares, AEW Dynamite, 11th June 2020

Adam Page and Kenny Omega vs Natural Nightmares

There was no chance that the team of Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall were winning this match, but when the teams began wrestling, that didn’t matter, as this was a fun tag team match.

It wasn’t anything overly special, but everything was delivered perfectly, ramping up in pace as the bout went on. It was an entertaining tag match, even if it was predictable.

6 SCU Vs Inner Circle, AEW Dynamite, 13th November 2019

SCU vs Inner Circle

With the AEW World Champion, Chris Jericho, competing in this match, there was an added star power which past tag title matches didn’t have. Jericho & Sammy Guevara were a fairly new alliance, with Inner Circle only being formed a month prior, but they displayed some good chemistry.

The match itself was fine, though it was very by-the-book and simple. The most notable takeaway was Scorpio Sky scoring the win over Jericho, becoming the first man in AEW to pin the World Champion, which was a surprising moment.

5 Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs SCU, AEW Dynamite, 12th February 2020

The stakes in this match didn’t feel as high as their previous encounter, as the result was pretty much inevitable. However, even with the predictable outcome, the four men worked hard to get the crowd fully invested.

This was a very good match with a strong atmosphere, although it was a step down from their last match, with a rematch between these two teams perhaps coming a little too soon.

4 SCU Vs Lucha Brothers, AEW Dynamite, 30th October 2019

SCU vs Lucha Brothers AEW

This match crowned the very first AEW World Tag Team Champions, completing a great arc for SCU, who had to fight from underneath at numerous points during the tag title tournament. Due to the different styles of performers, not everything clicked in this match, with a lack of chemistry in moments.

Overall, this was still a good match, and the crowd were into it. SCU got a nice moment, winning the titles and making history as the inaugural champs, with the Lucha Brothers looking good in defeat.

3 SCU Vs Adam Page & Kenny Omega, AEW Dynamite: Jericho Cruise, 22nd January 2020

Kenny Omega and Adam Page AEW World Tag Team Champions

The setting of this match was hugely unique, and it made everything on the show feel special, with it taking place on a cruise ship. Aside from that, the match worked very well, even if it started out slowly.

The miscommunication between Omega and Page was overdone a little, but it provided some nice storytelling which would develop into one of the best wrestling feuds in recent memory. The second half of this match was electric, with the two teams meshing wonderfully, with the crowd popping for the title change.

2 Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs Lucha Brothers, AEW Dynamite, 19th February 2020

Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs Lucha Bros on AEW Dynamite

This was a phenomenal match, and one of the better matches over the first six months or so of Dynamite. At certain points, it may have been a spot-fest, but it was a stunning display of athleticism, especially on the part of the Lucha Brothers.

The intensity was at a high from the opening bell, with it being non-stop action for 15 straight minutes. Even though Page & Omega winning was the likely outcome, the two teams managed to get the crowd to a red-hot level.

1 Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs Young Bucks, AEW Revolution, 29th February 2020

Adam Page & Kenny Omega Vs Young Bucks at Revolution

Not only was this best match of the night, and not only was it the best tag team match in AEW, but it is also up there with the greatest matches of all time. Every second of this match was perfect, both in terms of in-ring quality and from a storytelling perspective.

The crowd were hanging on the edge of their seats when they weren’t standing up and applauding, with the near falls all being excellent. Adam Page’s storyline with The Elite was taken up to an even greater level during this match, with the four men making history.
