Penta Oscuro (FKA as Penta El Zéro Miedo and Pentagon Jr.) and Rey Fénix are one of the best tag teams in the world. They’re real-life brothers, hence their tag team name. They began as “parejas increíbles,” the Spanish word for a tag team that consists of a heel and a babyface. Since that concept is pretty unfamiliar to American audiences, they tend to go one way or the other as a unit nowadays.

The pair have competed across the indie circuit in both the US and Mexico, as well as in major companies like IMPACT and Lucha Underground. They’re currently a part of both the AAA and AEW rosters, and they’ve held both promotions’ tag team championships. Given the mysterious presence that usually accompanies masked luchadors, there’s a lot that casual fans might not know about Penta and Fénix. In this article, we’ll take a look at 10 pictures that show a different side of the Lucha Brothers.

10 Penta Claus

This is quite the change-up for Penta, who’s most known for his brutality in the ring and his fixation on breaking arms. But even the scariest men can get into the holiday spirit, right? Despite his rather aggressive and spooky demeanor on AEW, Penta does have a pretty big soft side to him. This picture is just one example of that side shining through.

The Lucha Brothers first became a tag team in the year 2007, before Penta had ever taken on the “Pentagon Jr.” name that launched his career. Before then, he went by “Zaius,” and later “Dark Dragon,” the persona Penta is currently using in this picture.

Rey Fénix, the Bird of War we know and love, is pretty recognizable here. He, too, went by multiple names during his independent career, but has been some variation of Fénix since 2011.

8 Penta's Real Eyes

Because Penta is usually covered by his mask and face paint, and because he typically wears colored contact lenses, we rarely get to see Penta’s natural eyes. This is a selfie he posted from a plane ride to Jacksonville for an episode of Dynamite. You can see that Penta has nice brown eyes and a great sense of fashion.

7 Fénix, No Rey

Before he was Rey Fénix (translated to English as King Phoenix), the younger Lucha Brother was known simply as Fénix. When he went by this name, he had a flame on his forehead instead of a cross and had a wave of flames coming off the top of his mask. He was granted the title of Rey by the living legend Rey Mysterio. Since getting the title, Fénix has marked his forehead with a cross as a tribute to Mysterio.

6 Comic Book Heroes

Ever since the rise of Lucha Libre legend El Santo, luchadors have often been the stars of their own comic books. Thanks to Masked Republic, Penta and Fénix were given the same honor when they were integrated into the brand’s “Luchaverse.” This comic book gives the Lucha Bros a fun and imaginative origin story and follows them in their quest to fight evil. Other luchadors included in Masked Republic’s series are Konnan, Rey Mysterio, Tinieblas Jr, Solar, and Super Astro.

Luchadors are like modern-day superheroes. Like most superheroes, luchadors live a double life. When they don their masks, Penta and Fénix become larger than life. They’re capable of wowing arenas full of people through their fighting abilities. Outside the ring though, Fénix and Penta dress more casually. Both are seemingly big sneaker-heads and like to spice up their wardrobe through shoes.

4 Lucha Bucks

Fénix and Penta look a bit different here, don’t they? This is a picture of the Lucha Bros' biggest rivals, the Young Bucks, wearing the Lucha Bros masks backstage. Nick Jackson has Penta’s mask on, and Matt is wearing Fénix’s.

Though they have a history of attempting to utterly destroy each other in the ring, it seems the Young Bucks and the Lucha Bros are actually good friends in real life.

3 Spooky Fénix

Besides his incredible high-flying abilities, Fénix is also beloved by AEW fans for his charming smile. When the Lucha Bros first reunited as an official tag team around 2015, Fénix painted his face to match his brother’s skeleton-style makeup. This spooky look is definitely a big change from the bare-faced, happy Fénix that AEW has come to know and love.

2 Fénix The Artist

In addition to his undying devotion to Lucha Libre, Fénix also has a lot of love for art. He especially painted a lot during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and even had an art exhibit at the Republic of Lucha store and event center last summer. This is a picture of Fénix with several of his paintings. Most are abstract or surrealist and inspired by supernatural and religious concepts.

1 Fénix And Little Penta

When his older brother is unable to accompany Fénix to shows, the Mexaking has some excellent backup. This is a picture of Fénix and his son dressed as a little Penta. The pair made some appearances at indie shows in Mexico, where Little Penta accompanied his father to the ring. Maybe in 2042, we’ll be seeing Little Penta and Dark Order’s -1 in the main event of Revolution, who knows? Both certainly have great role models to look up to.
