According to his former tag team partner Billy Gunn, AEW is actively pursuing Road Dogg for a job with the company and is trying to negotiate a contract to come aboard, likely as a member of their production team.

During a virtual session with K&S WrestleFest, Gunn commented on the employment status on his former tag team partner and good friend WWE producer “Road Dogg” Brian James. When asked if he could ever see Road Dogg working with AEW, Gunn responded, “We’re trying to get him here." He added that nothing has come to pass yet, noting, "He’s got other things going on, his podcast that I have to hear about every single day."

In what capacity Road Dogg would be working with AEW, that's not clear. It could be behind the scenes as a producer or on-air in a speaking role, but it won't be as an active competitor and it won't be to reform the New Age Outlaws. Gunn shot any speculation of a tag team reunion down when he said, No, not reform the New Age Outlaws. If you’ve seen Brian lately, he doesn’t want to wrestle anymore.”

Shawn Michaels and Road Dogg in WWE NXT

Road Dogg was released from this contract with WWE and is free and clear to sign on with another promotion should he choose to. He currently hosts a podcast called "Oh...You Didn't Know with Road Dogg Brian James and Ryan Katz" and that started back in April of 2022 and pushes out a new episode weekly. He's considered a guy who certainly knows the business well having grown up in it and his experience in WWE would certainly be welcomed in AEW.

Road Dogg Has Been Hard On AEW

Not one to shy away from his opinions, Road Dogg has been critical of AEW in the past, suggesting their points system is ridiculous. To be fair, he's hard on WWE too and perhaps that's the kind of person they need behind the scenes to help them, instead of having people who are happy to roll with the punches and not work to improve the product from week to week.
