Anderson Silva's leg break at UFC 168 against Chris Weidman is one of the most heartbreaking and stomach-churning scenes in MMA history. Seeing a legend of the game sprawled out on the canvas in pain is a moment that even the most veteran MMA fans have trouble watching.

Unfortunately in a sport like MMA, horrific injuries have sadly become commonplace. It's a given when a fighter steps into the cage that there's a chance they will not leave the same they did going in. However sadly for some fighters, they still got way more than they bargained for in terms of damage.

Sage Northcutt was at one point considered one of the UFC's brightest prospects. Bursting onto the scene in 2015, Northcutt would depart the promotion three years later to sign with the Asia-based One Championship promotion, and he was soon matched up with kickboxer Cosmo Alexandre for his debut fight.

Suffice to say, it didn't go well for Northcutt as he was knocked out in brutal fashion 29-seconds into the bout. After the fight, it was revealed that Northcutt had 8 total fractures in his face, and was forced to undergo nine hours of surgery following the bout.

UFC 129 was Mark Hominick's homecoming, the longtime WEC fighter was finally getting a title shot against the Featherweight king Jose Aldo. Unfortunately for Hominick, it was not his night, to say the least.

Hominick went on to lose a one-sided decision to Aldo on the cards, but the true story of the fight was Hominick's insane hematoma on the side of his head. Despite looking like the Elephant Man, Hominick did make a good account of himself in defeat, reminding everyone why he is dubbed "The Machine".

8 Jon Jones's dislocated toe (vs Chael Sonnen)

Jon Jones' UFC 159 main-event bout against Chael Sonnen was nothing more than a glorified squash match. Sonnen was one of the UFC's biggest stars at the time, and they matched him up with Jones despite coming off a loss to Anderson Silva, in main part because of a lack of contenders for Jones at the time.

Jones predictably finished Sonnen in the first round, however, the biggest damage Jones took was inflicted by himself. Jones dislocated his big toe on his left foot while taking Sonnen down but didn't notice until the end of the bout, causing Jones to give a legendary sitdown interview with Joe Rogan post-fight.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's rematch against Frank Mir at UFC 140 was a matchup between two of the greatest jiu-jitsu artists in the Heavyweight division. The first time they met at UFC 92, it featured a highlight-reel knockout by Mir over Nogeuria in the second round, however, the second fight featured an even more unexpected round two finish.

The two had an insane scramble that ended with Mir on top of Nogueira and getting a kimura in tight. Nogeuria being the warrior that he is refused to tap, and as a result, Mir twisted his arm the opposite way and broke it. Mir won the bout via technical submission as a result.

Alistair Overeem vs Jarzinho Rozenstruik in 2019 was seen as a changing of the guard at 265 pounds - the longtime contender against the rising prospect. At Heavyweight everything can happen - the ending to Overeem/Rozenstruik is still jaw-dropping.

Overeem dominated Rozenstruik for almost all five rounds, however with five seconds remaining Rozenstruik knocked Overeem down badly with a Superman punch. The punch was enough for the fight to get waived off, in large part due to Overeem's lip being horrifically mangled, having been split in two following the punch.

5 Joanna Jędrzejczyk's hemotoma (vs Weili Zhang)

Joanna Jędrzejczyk vs Weili Zhang at UFC 248 is widely considered to be one of the greatest fights of all time, and for good reason. It was a five-round back and forth slugfest, but it also featured the heart of Jędrzejczyk on display in spades.

Jędrzejczyk's forehead became home to one of the largest hematomas that has ever been seen in MMA. Despite Zhang quite literally aiming for the hematoma in the championship rounds, Jędrzejczyk was able to survive and take the fight to the scorecards. Unfortunately, she went on to lose the fight via a contentious split decision.

However, following the end of the round, it was seen that McGregor actually broke his tibia in the closing seconds of the round, the injury only being noticed by doctors after McGregor pointed out to ringside doctors that his leg was facing the wrong way. Not the way anyone expected the trilogy to end.

Evangelista Cyborg is mostly known for being the original Cyborg, having adopted the name before giving the nickname to his ex-wife Cris Cyborg. Evangelista was a pioneer of Brazilian regional MMA, however, the way his career ended was nothing short of brutal.

Cyborg faced off against Michael "Venom" Page at Bellator 158 in 2016. Halfway through the second round, Cyborg was hit with a flying knee that landed flush and ended the fight. Cyborg had a noticeable dent in his forehead and the official diagnosis was a frontal sinus fracture. The injury officially ended the Brazilian's19-year career.

UFC 261 was mostly known for being the return of fans in attendance. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it was the first card with fans in over 14 months. Unfortunately, that just meant there was more of a crowd for one of the most horrifying injuries in MMA history.

17 seconds into the bout, Weidman threw a leg kick that was checked by Hall. Weidman's leg had a snap that echoed throughout the arena. The fight was over, and Uriah Hall was the first fighter to ever win a UFC fight without throwing a strike.
