AEW has quickly established itself as one of the top wrestling programs in the world. With a roster full of great talent, wrestling fans are excited to see what the next few years of AEW television will bring especially when stars like Adam Cole and Kenny Omega return to action. The company has helped nurture a ton of interesting gimmicks and many of them have gotten over like The Acclaimed and Orange Cassidy.

Although there are plenty of gimmicks that have become big talking points in the world of wrestling at AEW, there are also a ton that are just plain awful. This list will examine ten of the worst AEW gimmicks involving current roster superstars.

10 The Varsity Blonds

Varsity-Blondes

Brian Pillman Jr. has shown some promise as a wrestler but he and his tag team partner, Griff Garrison, have a long way to go to get over with audiences. The two have spent most of their wrestling careers on AEW Dark. AEW hasn't showcased the team, because their gimmick is just plain awful.

It's unclear if the Varsity Blonds are supposed to be a nod to the Hollywood Blonds, a tag team that Brian Pillman Sr. was a part of with Steve Austin, or if they're supposed to represent some type of jocks but whatever it is it's not working. Brian Pillman Jr. has also recently insinuated that the Varsity Blonds could be finished.

9 "El Toro Blanco" Rush

Rush in AEW.

Rush has been given a huge platform thanks to the help of Andrade. Although he does have great potential in the ring, he often looks like an amateur when he's performing with other superstars who are much more established.

His gimmick also does little to push him forward since it's hard to understand what about Rush is supposed to make him seem like a toro. Instead of having a gimmick that helps him stand out in a crowd, he's supposed to be a "bull of a wrestler." It's unclear what the gimmick is supposed to be and it's so bad that it's hindered Rush's chances of getting over.

8 "Fallen Goddess" Athena

Athena's arrival at AEW was met with huge praise from fans. She often seemed limited at the WWE and the hope was her time at AEW could introduce a gimmick that could help her get over in a big way with fans.

Instead, her Fallen Goddess identity has meandered around since she arrived at the company. It is unclear where she is supposed to stand in terms of identity unless she does something that helps her gimmick have some kind of hook for the audience, Athena will continue to fumble her potential.

7 Danhausen

Danhausen Cropped

When he was first introduced to AEW audiences, Danhausen was a lot of fun. In recent times, he's become more involved with in-ring wrestling, and it's totally tanked his entire gimmick.

Although every wrestling fan loves a respite from wrestling drama, Danhausen no longer plays the role of comic relief and is oftentimes taken way too seriously as a wrestler. His gimmick as a cutaway promo works well but as an in-ring wrestler, which he is now, it's one of the worst gimmicks at AEW.

6 Sonjay Dutt

Jay Letha, Satnam Singh, and Sonjay Dutt

Sonjay Dutt is a sketchy manager... that's his entire gimmick. Dutt has underdelivered so much as a manager that he's actually made Jay Lethal seem like less of a star. Sonjay has plenty of potential to make an impact as a manager, but his current gimmick is just too bland.

There's nothing about him that leaves fans wanting more and unless his gimmick changes to allow his "manager character" to stick out, he'll continue to be one of the lowest points of AEW television.

5 Tony Nese

Tony Nese Cropped

Tony Nese has been using the "premiere athlete" gimmick for a large part of his career. The gimmick helped him become fairly memorable with fans, but he has struggled to catch on at AEW because the company is full of actual premier athletes.

On any given episode of AEW television, fans will see some of the most amazing athletes on the planet. His gimmick holds no water in a sea full of athletes, and he's essentially a glorified jobber at AEW. He's gone from a "premier athlete" identity to a gimmick where he's just a guy that looks like he can wrestle but never actually wrestles.

4 The "Wrestler/Dentist" Britt Baker

Britt Baker AEW Women's World Champion

Britt Baker is the face of women's wrestling at AEW. Although her in-ring skills leave a lot to be desired, she's a great promo. The biggest issue for Baker, along with improving her skills in the ring, is that she needs a gimmick that helps her stay memorable to fans.

Everyone is impressed by the fact that she's an actual dentist and went to school to be a dentist. The issue for Baker is that a dentist doesn't make for a good wrestling gimmick. Outside of her usage of the mandible claw, there's nothing about it that makes it interesting and that also makes Britt Baker uninteresting at times.

3 Serpentico

Serpentico

Serpentico is a masked wrestler with a gimmick that many fans don't understand. Although wearing a mask can quickly establish an identity for a wrestling superstar, Serpentico has become one of the rare masked wrestlers who doesn't have an identity at all.

He was trained by Bubba Ray and Devon Dudley so it seems there's some aspect of him that could be hardcore but, overall, he's failed to establish himself with fans, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that he's a masked wrestler with no backstory and a hollow gimmick.

2 "Bucket Hat" Jake Hager

Jake Hager

Although many fans will argue that they prefer Jake Hager to Jack Swagger, the biggest difference between the two gimmicks is that one of them had an identity, and the other just meanders. Jake Hager has recently evolved from his "MMA fighter" persona to a wrestler fixated on a purple bucket hat.

There is no story as to why he's so fascinated with the hat or why it means anything to him. It's just another bland move for Hager that's allowing him to fall in the ranks at AEW.

1 Sammy And Tay

Sammy Guevara was once one of the most promising wrestlers on the AEW roster. He put on a classic rivalry with Cody Rhodes that should have catapulted him into the upper mid-card at the very least. Since he and Tay Conti married they've become a unit on AEW television.

Not only do fans seem to despise the two as a team, but they haven't done anything as a unit to help establish themselves as anything more than two young lovers. Their entire gimmick is that they are romantically involved, and that identity has never worked out in wrestling, and it's not working out for them either.
