Nothing good really lasts forever. The average relationship in the United States is said to last around two years, but it’s much shorter when you add fame and a lot of money to the mix. Whenever you read a tabloid, it seems that a famous couple that had just started dating in the last issue had called it quits. These short shelf lives usually come down to too much attention, a lack of personal space, and a very busy schedule on both sides of the relationship.
We see it all of the time in the world of sports, and it’s usually the NBA that gets the most attention. We recognize these players away from the stadium more than any other sport because of the amount of face-time that they get on television and in the media. It can be a bit difficult to play under these circumstances when cameras are following you and wondering who you’re dating.
For some it’s been a distraction, especially when the girlfriend or wife in question is also an A-list celebrity. Over the years, there’s been some really interesting hookups between NBA players and celebrities, whether it be a star player that has won multiple awards or even bench players that got attention from their relationships. Here are 10 relationships that you likely have forgotten about, and five of the rare ones that have withstood the test of time (so far).
15. Forgotten Couple: Dennis Rodman And Carmen Electra
While “The Worm” didn’t marry Madonna, he did get married to another famous figure from the 1990s. In November 1998, Rodman and actress/television personality Carmen Electra ran off to Las Vegas to get married. It wouldn’t last long, however, as they were divorced within just six months. Still, their relationship drew a lot of attention from the press, as they were one of the “it” couples in pop culture.
Electra said that “What I saw in the beginning was this gentle giant that was in a lot of pain. So in a way, we understood each other.” Things would go south, however. “Our relationship was very passionate. When it was good, it was amazing. And when it was bad, it was the worst,” she said.
14. Forgotten Couple: Rashad McCants And Khloe Kardashian
Pretty much everyone remembers when reality television star Khloe Kardashian was married to former NBA player Lamar Odom, as they were married from 2009 to 2015. Afterward, she kept her relationships in the NBA as she dated Houston Rockets star James Harden and is now with Cleveland Cavalier Tristan Thompson. There was an NBA player before all of them though, and it was Rashad McCants.
McCants only ended up playing in the NBA for four years, and the two dated for just a few months in 2009 before she quickly married Odom. McCants actually said that dating Kardashian ruined his career, saying that “Without that situation in play, I’m a $60-70 million player.” He added that “I didn’t like all the attention. I feel like it was for no reason.”
13. Still Together: Devin Harris And Meghan Allen
In the same first round where Sasha Vujacic was taken toward the end, former Wisconsin guard Devin Harris was the fifth overall pick, being selected by the Dallas Mavericks. Harris has since played for the Nets, Jazz and Hawks, but since 2013 has returned to the Mavericks. During the middle of his career, Harris started dating Meghan Allen. Allen first grabbed attention by being a contestant on “Fear Factor”, and parlayed it into a modelling career.
It was in 2009 that Allen revealed on “The Howard Stern Show” that she was dating Harris, just two years after appearing in Playboy. In 2013, the couple decided to make it official and tied the knot. The couple is still together, and approaching a decade together, which is unheard of in the NBA.
12. Forgotten Couple: Rick Fox And Eliza Dushku
Former North Carolina standout Rick Fox wasn’t really ever an NBA star, but did have some solid seasons with the Celtics and Lakers between 1991 and 2004. He would finish with 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Fox would get most of his attention for his off-the-court relationships, however. Fox was famously married to Vanessa Williams, and the couple had a daughter during their time together that lasted from 1999 to 2004.
Several years later, Fox started dating Eliza Dushku, star of shows such as “Tru Calling” and “Dollhouse”. They first got together in 2009, and had considered getting married at one point. It would come to an end in 2014 though, as the couple lived too far apart. It wasn’t an ugly split, which was also the case between Fox and Williams, so he has that going for him.
11. Forgotten Couple: Marko Jaric And Adriana Lima
Marko Jaric from Serbia wasn’t exactly earmarked for NBA greatness, as he had to wait until the final pick in the 2000 NBA Draft to hear his name called by the Clippers. Jaric stayed there for three seasons, and then played with the Timberwolves and Grizzlies before heading to Europe and ending his career in 2011. Overall, Jaric would have just 7.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.
During Jaric’s final season in the NBA, he announced his engagement to his girlfriend, Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima. The next year, they went to Wyoming and got married, then had a pair of daughters. The couple then separated in 2014, but it wouldn’t be for another two years until it became official.
10. Still Dating: Al Horford and Amelia Vega
If you don’t know who Amelia Vega is, that’s OK. The 6’2” stunner is from the Dominican Republic, and came from an accomplished family. In 2003, she entered the Miss Universe competition and ended up winning, setting records as being both the youngest and tallest woman to win the title. The notoriety made her a famous model, and she started working on Spanish-speaking television.
Vega has also dabbled in music and business, living a pretty accomplished life. In 2009, she started dating Al Horford, and the couple tied the knot on Christmas Eve 2011. Four years later, the couple announced that they had their first child, and then had a second in 2016. Now living in Massachusetts, Vega and Horford are still together, and he’s actually the younger one in the relationship by two years.
9. Forgotten Couple: Sasha Vujacic And Maria Sharapova
Sasha Vujacic isn’t exactly the biggest name in NBA history, but the former first round pick in 2004 did have a nice career in terms of length. The 33-year-old played with the Lakers, Nets, Clippers and Knicks, putting together 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Along the way, Vujacic also won a pair of NBA Championships, but the biggest accolade for the Slovenian was in his personal life.
Not many people realized that they were even dating at the time, or even that they were engaged at one point. In 2012, the couple decided to part ways, and Vujacic was back on the market. Years after they went their separate ways, Vujacic was asked about the relationship and he said that he was over it.
8. Forgotten Couple: Dennis Rodman And Madonna
Now that we’re nearly two decades separated from the career of Dennis Rodman, most of what we remember about him was that he was an excellent rebounder, a larger than life personality, a former part-time professional wrestler and even a guest of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. With all of that going on, it’s easy to forget that Rodman also had some memorable relationships along the way.
Earlier on in his career, Rodman said that he was approached by famous singer Madonna. Rodman said “I’m like, whatever, great…hooking up with Madonna, but I thought her music sucked! Obviously, I could have married her.” It wasn’t a very long relationship as the couple dated for two months before calling it quits, and some blamed Madonna for distracting him during the 1994 NBA Playoffs while with the Spurs.
7. Still Dating: Dwyane Wade And Gabrielle Union
Dwyane Wade has had a long NBA career with a long list of accomplishments that includes a dozen All Star Game appearances, three NBA titles and eight All-NBA teams. For those that don’t follow the NBA, though, he’s pretty much just known as Gabrielle Union’s husband. Wade had originally been married to his high school girlfriend Siohvaughn Funches from 2002 to 2007, and then started dating the actress two years after his divorce.
The couple then took a break in 2013 as they weren’t able to spend much time together, but not only got back together later in the year, but also became engaged. The next year, the couple got married at a ceremony in Miami and have been together ever since. It almost didn’t happen as Wade became a father during the time the couple was separated, which some might have forgotten about.
6. Forgotten Couple: Andre Drummond And Jennette McCurdy
Remember the actress from “iCarly” and “Sam & Cat” on Nickelodeon? That’s Jennette McCurdy, who now stars on the Netflix series “Between”. She’s a little older than you might think at 25 years old, and is actually older than ex-boyfriend Andre Drummond. Drummond, of course, is the star of the Detroit Pistons, a rebound machine that has made an All Star Game and was a first round pick in 2012.
Drummond would constantly talk on social media about how he had a crush on McCurdy, and she finally gave in and agreed to go on a date with him. It wouldn’t last long, however, as they dated for just about a week. The reason it didn’t last? “My first kiss with him was after we had gone laser tagging. I stood on a chair…I sort of went for it,” she said. “But it wasn’t great. It didn’t go great. No sparks and the mouth…the shapes weren’t right.” Awkward.
5. Forgotten Couple: Kevin Love And Cody Horn
Most of our readers are male, so you probably haven’t seen “Magic Mike”, but you’ve probably seen actress Cody Horn in other places. Some of her other credits include “Rescue Me”, and she also appeared on “The Office”, hired by Will Ferrell’s character in the seventh season. The model and actress is one of the women that Cavaliers star Kevin Love dated during his career, though he’s with Kate Bock right now.
Love and Horn actually lasted for several years, first getting together in 2012. It was rumoured that the two were also living together, but they would go their separate ways in 2016. Unlike teammates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, Love hasn’t been married yet, but he’s not exactly struggling off the court as he was also dating a stunning cheerleader while at UCLA.
4. Still Dating: Iman Shumpert And Teyana Taylor
After leaving Georgia Tech in 2011, Iman Shumpert became the 17th overall pick by the New York Knicks. After four seasons in New York, Shumpert would sign on with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he remains today. 2015 wasn’t only the year where he would sign with Cleveland, but also the year in which he had his first child. Shumpert delivered the baby himself with his wife, Teyana Taylor.
Taylor started her career as a singer, and would also make her mark as a dancer, actress and model. Taylor has also written for some big name artists and has sang with stars such as Pharrell and Kanye West. She hasn’t always been in the spotlight as a big name, but you’ve likely seen her and heard her voice, all while having a long-term relationship with an NBA star.
3. Forgotten Couple: Chris Webber And Tyra Banks
The former first overall pick in 1993, Chris Webber would spend 15 years in the NBA, making five All Star Games, putting up 20.7 points, 10 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. During the later parts of his career, Webber was rumoured to be in a relationship with supermodel, actress and television personality Tyra Banks. Although they should have been a highly publicized couple, the two really kept things quiet.
It was back in 2002 that they were believed to be dating, and were spotted together on multiple occasions. There were even rumours that the two had been engaged, but those turned out not to be true. Instead, Webber and Banks went their separate ways in 2004. Now, Webber is married to a woman named Erika Dates while Banks has never been married.
2. Forgotten Couple: Daniel Gibson And Keyshia Cole
Keyshia Cole started her career in music before she was even a teenager, and finally released her first album in 2005. She’s had songs over the years that included “Let It Go”, “You” and “Incapable”, but might be better known for appearing on multiple television series. One of those series was “Keyshia & Daniel: Family First” which showcased her life with NBA playing husband Daniel Gibson.
If you follow the NBA above all else, you probably weren’t even aware that show existed. Gibson, of course, had played from 2006 to 2013 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, putting up 7.8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists per game. Shortly after their reality series together, Cole and Gibson announced that they were splitting up, though it took three years until their eventual divorce in 2017.
1. Still Dating: Grant Hill And Tamia
One of the greatest college basketball players ever, Grant Hill had been tabbed as a potential all-timer in the NBA. Though injuries would prevent him from reaching his full potential, Hill still had a long and solid career. While he was with the Detroit Pistons in the 1990s, Hill had met a singer named Tamia from across the border in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The two hit it off, and were then married in 1999.
The two are still together, and have had two daughters over the years. If you’re not aware with Tamia’s work, she’s an R&B singer that has had several hit songs that include “Stranger in My House” and “Officially Missing You”. Her work has also earned her a half dozen Grammy Award nominations, with the two most recent coming in 2013.
