Despite his mother's problematic relationship with his father, Kevin Garnett surprisingly had a great marriage of his own. He dated his longtime girlfriend Brandi Garnett (née Padilla) for several years before tying the knot with the smokin' hot lady in 2004. They married in a private ceremony in California with only their friends and relatives in attendance.
Unlike other NBA couples, Kevin and Brandi prefer to avoid the spotlight. Perhaps that's why their marriage has lasted so long. Brandi is an attractive woman, but she's far from the average NBA WAG. But just like any other couple, the Garnetts have had their fair share of ups and downs. Over the years, there have been a lot of rumors of infidelity on Kevin's part, including a rumor of chasing after an escort in June 2013. In spite of all the rumors, the couple have two daughters: Capri, who was born in 2008, and another one with an undisclosed name who was born in 2013.
The basketball world wouldn't have been the same without the talented power forward and center. Kevin became the first NBA player to be selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves and then made the postseason eight consecutive times. He also won the NBA MVP award in 2008. That being said, it's common knowledge that behind every successful man is an equally successful woman. You may not think Brandi defines the meaning of a successful female, but she hasn't really caused any trouble to her hubby just for the sake of reality TV show ratings.
Here are 15 things that you didn't know about his marriage.
16 Kevin's Wedding Was The Reason He Skipped Athens 2004
Yes, Kevin Garnett's wedding was the primary reason why he skipped the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The newlyweds enjoyed their path to wedded bliss, but Garnett was one of the players who chose to withdraw from the Olympics. Those other players include: Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Karl Malone, Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Elton Brand, Kenyon Martin, Shaquille O'Neal and Tracy McGrady. Despite the string of pullouts from NBA stars, coach Larry Brown still had two of his first-choice big men (Tim Duncan and Jermaine O'Neal) in Team USA. "Until something drastic happens," Jermaine O'Neal told Mark Stein of ESPN. "I'm going to play in Athens."
You can describe Kevin as a selfish man, but he wasn't the only player who decided not to participate in the Olympics that year. Also, his wedding didn't just spurn from a zero-to-60 relationship. The two love birds dated for years and years before deciding to take the next step.
15 Kevin Often Calls His Daughters By Their Nicknames
Kevin Garnett is reportedly a big fan of nicknames. He often calls his daughters by their various nicknames like "Peanut" and "Boo Boo." He defends his fondness towards nicknames by saying that it's his way of personalizing everything that's close to his heart.
Fun fact: Garnett calls himself by the nickname "Freak." Now, you're probably wondering what nickname he decided to give his beautiful wife. Though, don’t you think that Brandy is the proper nickname for a good-looking woman? After all, a Brady is a go-to after-dinner drink for the working professionals who enjoy fancy dinners in upscale restaurants and bars.
The couple has a tendency to keep their kids out of the spotlight during public events and live appearances. Aside from unknowingly being in snaps taken by the paparazzi, the proud parents do their best to avoid flaunting their sweet daughters in public. That's another reason why corny nicknames help them.
14 Brandi Has Ties To The Music Industry
Brandi isn't the only one in the Padilla family who's married to a famous celebrity. Her sister Lisa is married to legendary Def Jam producer Jimmy Jam Harris, who used to be a part of R&B songwriting and record production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Harris. So it's clear that Brandi has ties with the music industry. Well, at least in terms of family.
We might be able to believe that Brandi likes to listen to R&B and pop music because it's a popular record label that's owned by the Universal Music Group. They've produced a lot of music for modern artists and rappers like Kanye West, Common, Toni Braxton, Justin Bieber and Iggy Azalea. What we know is that she looks like a talented singer with the right amount of star factor on top of those gorgeous looks. She's a beautiful woman, no matter what you say or think.
13 Kevin Had An Alleged Relationship With A Dancer
A slight scandal brewed in the ranks of the Celtics when there were quite a few words going around that Kevin might've been carrying on a discreet, long-term relationship with a former Timberwolves dancer named Krissy Freiberg. It was reported that the fallacious relationship went on for nearly four years and Kristy even moved to Boston when Kevin was traded to the Celtics. At the time of the rumors, Brandi just gave birth to the couple's first child. We wonder what she had to say about all this.
But seriously, it's amazing how fake news sites can put out false stories just to tarnish the images and reputations of others. It's also amazing how the media will save such stories like they think everyone is stumbling around like a wasted zombie and believing whatever the news outlets come up with. Many NBA players cheat on their wives and girlfriends, but it's safe to say this alleged incident might not be true.
12 Kevin Bought Season Tickets For That Dancer
Most athletes who decide to have affairs go out of their way to keep them out of the public eye. However, this can be a difficult task to accomplish nowadays when almost everything can be publicized on the internet. Yet, you'd likely expect an athlete to not be dumb enough to do what Kevin reportedly did for his mistress Krissy Freiberg.
Garnett bought season tickets for Kristy back in 2011. Unfortunately, Brandi saw Freiberg at one of the home games and it obviously didn't sit well with her. She confronted his jump-off after noticing that Kristy walked out of a special exit of the TD Garden. She was reportedly pissed off at Kristy and surprisingly had to be restrained from beating her a**. The insider told mediatakeout, “Brandi is usually cool, calm and collected...but for [Krissy] to go to the same game as her, that’s just too much...Oh don’t worry about IF Brandi would have won, there were enough people with her to make sure that she WOULD HAVE [won]."
11 Kevin's Mother-In-Law Is A Southern California Native
Kevin Garnett was born in Greenville, South Carolina, as the second of his mother's three children. She never married his father O'Lewis McCullough, so he grew up with his mother and stepfather Ernest Irby instead.
Despite not playing basketball until high school, Garnett fell in love with the sport at Hillcrest Middle School. He played three years of basketball at Mauldin High School. However, he was in close proximity of a fight between black and white students at one point. Although he wasn't involved, he was one of three students who were arrested for second-degree lynching. This racially charged incident made him decide to leave Mauldin High and transfer to the Farragut Career Academy in Chicago for his senior year of high school. Turns out, he got drafted fresh out of high school and embarked on a successful NBA career.
On the contrary, his wife's mother is a southern California native, hailing from San Pedro. We don't know how the couple first met, but does it really matter? A lot of California girls are sizzling hot!
10 Kevin Made An Inappropriate Comment About LaLa Anthony
Remember when Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett engaged in a bus stop face-off after a hard-fought game at Madison Square Garden? The face-off seemed to have sparked by Kevin's words said about Anthony's wife LaLa. Garnett reportedly said that La La tasted like Honey Nut Cheerios.
The two NBA stars got tangled up several times during the game, which the Celtics escaped with a 102-96 win over the Knicks. Both players were hit with technical fouls after elbowing each other under the rim and getting in each other's faces. The back-and-forth fouls were so intense that the players had to be split up. Garnett was also spotted jawing off at Anthony.
It appeared that Anthony wasn't satisfied with the clash ending on the court. It was reported that he yelled at Garnett outside the Celtics' locker room after the game. Then, he allegedly tried to confront him as the Celtics boarded their team bus. MSG security, Knicks head coach Mike Woodson and five NYPD officers raced to the scene to break up the confrontation.
9 LaLa Weighed In On Kevin's Inappropriate Comment
Like any other celebrity, LaLa took to Twitter to weigh in on Kevin Garnett's infamous Honey Nut Cheerios comment that provoked her NBA star hubby Carmelo Anthony on the court. A week after being compared to the healthy breakfast cereal, she put out a tweet, saying: "Not for nothing, but we ALL deserve a check or some free cereal 4all the publicity we’ve given Honey Nut Cheerios! LOL #cantbelieveeverything."
The insignificant cereal battle began at an Eastern Conference Game at Madison Square Garden. During the showdown, Garnett reportedly told Anthony, "Your wife tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios." Both players were separated immediately and charged with technical fouls, but Anthony continued beefing with Garnett as he screamed outside the Celtics' locker room after the game and confronted Garnett again as the Celtics boarded their team bus. Once the argument was dissolved, Anthony released a statement, saying, “I lost my cool. It just was out of character...I allowed some negativity to come into my circle. It’s over with for me. Whatever happened…happened. The words that were being said between Garnett, and me it happened; can’t take that away."
8 The Couple Owned A Home In Concord, Massachusetts
When Kevin Garnett played for the Boston Celtics from 2007 to 2013, he purchased an 8,000 square foot mansion in Concord, Massachusetts, for approximately $4.6 million. But the veteran NBA power forward and center later decided to sell his charming home after finding out he was traded to New York's newest basketball team, the Brooklyn Nets, in June 2013.
Garnett and his wife reportedly said that they'll treasure the memories they have of the home, but it's time to let it go. The home was designed by Machado and Silvetti Associates, a Boston-based architecture and urban design firm that was responsible for the updates to the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, California. The home overlooks Howe’s Pond on 12.7 wooded acres The home also features floor-to-ceiling glass and vaulted spaces that flood the interiors in natural light. It contains 11,000 square feet of living space with an open living room, dining room, five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, a wine cellar, a gym and a media room.
Unfortunately, Garnett took the loss in the sale of the home, which was bought for just $3.635 million.
7 The Onion's Claim That Kevin Talks Trash In His Sleep
This isn't a true story, but it would've been amusing if it was true.
The Onion wrote, "NEW YORK — Saying she has still not grown accustomed to the irritating habit despite being married to the Brooklyn Nets power forward for a decade, Brandi Garnett revealed to reporters that she was once again kept up the whole night Thursday by her husband talking trash in his sleep.... Garnett went on to explain that her husband never has any recollection the next day of having talked trash in his sleep, though he often seamlessly continues cursing out Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah as soon as he wakes up."
At least this couple can ignore the trolls on social media. Way to go! A very amusing piece, overall.
5 The Couple Loves Them Some Tennis
When he played for the Celtics, Kevin attended a tennis match with Brandi and their daughter Capri. To be specific, it was day eight of the 2011 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York, on September 5, 2011.
Here's the lowdown of the final results: In the women's singles, Samantha Stosur defeated Serena Williams in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) for her first Grand Slam title. Stosur also became the first Australian female tennis player to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980. In the men's singles, both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic competed in the final for the second straight year. This time, Djokovic won 6–2, 6–4, 6–7 (3–7), 6–1 to capture his first US Open title.
We're not sure if the entire family enjoyed the sport of tennis, as Capri looks bored, but we're fairly certain that they loved them some tennis.
4 Kevin Missed Two Practices As Brandi Went Through Labor
Becoming a first-time father is a big deal, so it's perfectly understandable why Kevin Garnett missed two of the Celtics' practices to be there with his wife Brandi for the birth of their first child, a daughter named Capri, who was born on April 18, 2008. Brandi also became a first-time mother, so that made two new parents. Kevin returned to be with the Celtics on April 19.
We don't know how they chose their raise their first child, but we can say that Kevin is one of the few NBA stars who turned into husbands. Not only that, he seemed to be determined to keep his relationship strong, even after having a baby. The most important thing in a relationship is to support and encourage each other. It seems like the couple has remained optimistic and entered parenthood with a positive attitude like they could defeat anything that's thrown their way.
3 The Fashionable Side Of The Couple
Of course, the majority of NBA players and their WAGs like to play dress up and clean up nice for the flashing lights at mainstream events. So do Kevin Garnett and his wife Brandi. The only difference is that the couple tries their best to stay out of the limelight. Although that's not 100 percent achievable, they at least give it their all.
Photographers snapped some adorable pictures of Kevin and Brandi as they showed up to the Vogue 2013 Fashion Fund Finalists Celebration at Spring Studios in New York City on November 11, 2013. The couple opted for modest, low-key outfits: Kevin wore an all-black suit while Brandi rocked a black and silver halter top dress. They likely had a great time sans the kids. Their fashionable side just goes to show that matching with your significant other doesn't mean both of you have to look like double the wacko.
2 The Couple Has A Major Height Difference
You might've already noticed, but Kevin Garnett and his wife Brandi have a major height difference. Kevin stands tall at 6'1" whereas Brandi is on the short side at 5'3". Though, there's nothing wrong with a taller guy dating a shorter woman, the couple likely had some struggles due to their height differences. We don't know the specific struggles, but outsiders might think that Brandi is Kevin's daughter due to her petite frame and mixed-race looks. All we can do is speculate.
Bottom line is, love is love and it doesn't matter what two people look like on the outside. Kevin seems to be very much in love with Brandi since they've been married for 13 years and share two adorable daughters who will likely grow up to become successful. Basically, they're like the teenage couple who overcame adversity in order to be a happy couple and stay that way.
1 Family Issues Are Never Public
When the media asked Kevin Garnett about his time away from the court, the then-31-year-old responded, "Family issues are never public, so I ask [the media] to respect that."
Good job, Kevin. He's right on how family issues are never public. They're not supposed to be public anyways. The media tried their best to collect some extra information on his family, but he bluntly rejected the idea. Unlike other NBA couples, he and his wife aren't looking for attention for a reality TV show like Basketball Wives on VH1. This couple isn't perfect—every couple has their ups and downs—but at least they're not becoming tabloid fodder like the Kardashian-Jenner family.
The last thing a family needs is to be bashed on a regular basis. Kevin is one of the biggest names in the basketball world, but he clearly tries to create a really normal life for his wife and children.
