The two biggest questions heading into this NBA off-season were going to be, “Where will LeBron James end up?” and “Will Kevin Durant re-sign with the Golden State Warriors?” Well, while James’ future in, or away, from Cleveland is still unknown, KD has gone ahead and made it pretty clear that he will be back in Golden State next season.
In an Interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, Durant didn’t hesitate for a second when asked about what he plans on doing this summer saying, “I plan on staying with the Warriors.” He added that there are some “small details” to be worked out, but it sounds pretty certain that the band is staying together and will be trying to three-peat next year after finishing off the Cavs in Game 4 on Friday.
Durant is currently in the second year of a two-year deal he signed last season - which saw him take $10 million less than he could have gotten, in order to give the team cap room to resign Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston - both players have been important pieces to the team.
The deal Durant signed last year did have a player option for the upcoming season but as was reported back in April by ESPN, KD is expected to decline that player option which would make him an unrestricted free agent. That, in turn, would allow him to re-sign with the Warriors at a much better (and no longer discounted) rate.
LeBron James said about Durant following his awesome performance in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, "Kevin Durant is one of the best players I've ever played against, that this league has ever seen." And KD is most likely going to get paid like one of the best players in the league.
There are many options that Durant and his business partner, Rich Klieman, will look at. However, one possibility could see Durant signing a 4-year max contract with the Warriors which would be for $158 million.
So, unless those "small details" become big ones, it looks like the league will once again be chasing the Warriors to the Finals in 2019!
