Projecting 10 NBA Players Who Will Switch Teams Before The Start Of This Season (And 10 In 2019)

There is no question that this NBA off-season was one that was full of major transactions that are going to change the dynamic of the entire league. However, even with all the moves that we have witnessed thus far, there is definitely more that are on the way. The NBA regular season is going to start in the next upcoming months, so there is still time for these teams to make more moves before it begins. However, even with this, we definitely are also in line for seeing some major trades during the regular season as well. At the end of the day, it is quite apparent that the league is going to see even more big changes by the time the trade deadline is upon us.

With all that has been stated thus far, we will be looking at ten NBA players who will be traded before the start of the regular season and ten more who will end up moved in 2019. There are definitely some pretty big name players that are currently on the trade block, or at least in the rumor mill, so we definitely could see some major splashes. The way that these teams end up performing this year will also determine if they are buyers or sellers at the deadline. With that, players with one year left on rebuilding teams will likely be moved by the trade deadline. At the end of the day, we are definitely in for a very exciting time this NBA season and the trades are still coming.

Nonetheless, let’s look at the ten NBA players who will be traded before the start of the regular season and ten more who will be traded by 2019!

20 Before Start Of Season: Kent Bazemore

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

There have been a lot of rumors that the Hawks are looking to continue their rebuilding period by trading away Kent Bazemore. This makes a lot of sense because the veteran does have a decent amount of trade value and could benefit playing for a contending team instead.

Bazemore is not a star by any stretch of the imagination, but he will attract teams and will likely be dealt before the start of the season.

This would definitely be a massive move for the veteran because it would allow him to play competitive basketball and even potentially get a taste of the playoffs.

19 In 2019: Isaiah Thomas

Isaiah Thomas signed a veteran minimum deal with the Denver Nuggets this off-season and this is just one year from many people believing he deserved a max deal. Injuries and the trade from Boston really ended up hurting his confidence and his value dropped off immensely.

Thomas could very well bounce back and find himself traded during the season from the rebuilding Nuggets.

This could end up being a great move for him at the end of the day. However, even if he struggles, it still is likely that he will be traded by the end of the season.

18 Before Start Of Season: Joakim Noah

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Joakim Noah has been one of the biggest busts in the history of the New York Knicks and it is truly disappointing. After a very solid tenure with the Chicago Bulls, Noah was expected to remain a top notch player, but injuries have completely derailed his entire career.

If the Knicks can formulate a big trade to get rid of this contract, it would help them immensely with next off-season. Teams may be open to trading for Noah before the season if it means that they land the Knicks’ first rounder as well. Noah likely will be dealt before the season or he will be released.

17 In 2019: Vince Carter

Vince Carter is continuing his career and is going to start the season with the Atlanta Hawks this year. It is apparent that he has been playing for rebuilding teams these last few years to keep his career going, so it makes a lot of sense that he opted to sign with the Hawks at this time.

However, even with this being the case, it is not hard to believe that he could end up being dealt during the season.

The Raptors could use some veteran leadership for their playoff run.

It would be amazing to see them bring back their former franchise player to complete his career.

16 Before Start Of Season: Hassan Whiteside

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

With Hassan Whiteside’s trade value at its highest, it has been reported that the Miami Heat have been shopping him. This makes a plethora of sense because the team is clearly in a rebuilding period and could use him to bring in some assets to help the future.

There are rumors that the Cavaliers appear to be a team that are very interested in the veteran.

This would be a big move for them because it will show the league that they are still looking to compete even without LeBron. Whiteside is an underrated player and one of the best defensive ones as well.

15 In 2019: J.R. Smith

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Cavaliers could very well look to trade J.R. Smith during the regular season because of how this past season went down. Smith definitely is not a bad player, but his massive mistake in Game 1 of the NBA finals is one that will never be forgotten and its hurt his legacy.

With the Cavaliers looking to change up the core of this roster, it definitely seems like Smith will end up being moved in 2019.

He simply is too old to go through a potential rebuilding period and could be happier being moved as well. At the end of the day, Smith’s legacy in Cleveland was ruined last postseason, so a move would be wise.

14 Before Start Of Season: Danilo Gallinari

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Danilo Gallinari has not been a good fit with the Clippers and they have been reportedly shopping him all off-season. Although a deal has yet to occur, one has to believe that it is on the horizon. Gallinari simply does not fit in with this team and they could save money by letting him go.

Due to the fact that his contract is not a good one, the team likely would have to part ways with another significant piece to make it go through. However, this does not seem like it would be too challenging if it meant that the team would end up having far more long-term success with the extra cash.

13 In 2019: Jeremy Lamb

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Jeremy Lamb will be a trade target by the deadline period because he is set to become a free agent next off-season and the Hornets are likely going to be sellers. There should be many contending teams interested in him because he could be an excellent player off the bench.

The former first round pick is one that could end up being a diamond in the rough type of pick up because he does still have a lot of potential.

At the end of the day, there is no question that he will be traded at the deadline this year, as he does possess a decent amount of trade value for the rebuilding team.

12 Before Start Of Season: Tristan Thompson

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Tristan Thompson has obviously been all over the news because of his off the court antics, but it has been all in a bad way. This could very well result in the team looking to trade him and the negative persona that he possesses. Although his value might be lower, it would be better off.

The Cavaliers are obviously looking to build a new core of players with the loss of LeBron James. There is no question that it will be a tough going for the Cavaliers over the next few years, so they might as well get rid of Thompson to not only help with the present locker room morale, but future as well.

11 In 2019: D’Angelo Russell

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

It is very hard to determine how good of a player that D’Angelo Russell will become. Right now he is not in the best of situations because he is playing for a Brooklyn Nets team that offers him no support whatsoever. He has been holding his own, but he could do better with other teammates.

It may sound crazy, but Russell could be dealt if the Nets continue to not get better. His progression has been inconsistent as well, so they could look to move him before his value gets lower. This is a risky decision, but at the end of the day, would be worth it for the right return.

10 Before Start Of Season: Nikola Vucevic

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Nikola Vucevic has appears to be a player who very well could end up being moved before the season starts. This is largely because of the fact that the Magic are astronomically bad and should trade away their veterans for their value. It would benefit both parties if so.

Vucevic has not grown into the elite talent that many people in Orlando thought he would.

There is no question that Vucevic can be a solid starting player, but at the same time, he is not the type of player to build a rebuild around. At the end of the day, he really appears to be expendable.

9 In 2019: DeAndre Jordan

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

If the Dallas Mavericks continue to be at the bottom of the NBA next season, then there is no question that they will decide to trade newly acquired DeAndre Jordan. Jordan was wise in signing a one-year deal with the team because if they fail this year, he can test the market again.

The Mavericks ultimately have nothing to lose with this type of deal as well, so it makes a lot of sense that they did it. However, if they still are at the bottom of the NBA this upcoming season, then they have no choice in moving him by the trade deadline. It would make Jordan one of the best trade targets.

8 Before Start Of Season: C.J. McCollum

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

There has been a lot of talk that the Portland Trail Blazers may decide to move C.J. McCollum before the start of the season. Although this is a questionable decision, it is clear that they also have a lot of depth on the roster, so it could benefit them looking to improve elsewhere.

McCollum also has a plethora of trade value at this time because of how effective he has been over the last three seasons. He even was the most improved player in 2016 and the free-throw percentage leader in 2017. At the end of the day, this is a valuable player that could bring in a solid package.

7 In 2019: Jimmy Butler

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a tough decision to make when it comes to their star player, Jimmy Butler. Butler’s contract is coming to a close in the next few years and he has already shown signs that he is discontent with the team at this present time.

There is a pretty solid chance that the Timberwolves could end up moving Butler by this season’s trade deadline if there is no progress with extension talks. At the end of the day, the Timberwolves cannot afford to lose Butler for nothing and should look to trade him now. His value will only get lower the closer he gets to becoming a free agent.

6 Before Start Of Season: Andrew Wiggins

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

There is another Minnesota Timberwolves player who has been in the rumor mill and that is Andrew Wiggins. A trade appears to be likely because of the fact that the youngster seems to not fit into the team’s current style. There also is some drama involving him brewing in the locker room.

The only way a Wiggins’ trade ends up occurring before the start of the regular season is if they can get a solid return for him. There is no question that Wiggins has an abundance of potential to be a star, but like Butler, they cannot afford to lose him for nothing once he is eligible to be a free agent.

5 In 2019: Marc Gasol

Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

It is only a matter of time before the Memphis Grizzlies are going to trade away Marc Gasol. It is absolutely apparent that Gasol’s value is not the same as it was a few years ago, but he still is the player that will net them the best return out of all of their veterans. It is clear this is overdue.

Once the Grizzlies are once again at the bottom of the standings this season, they will inevitably be trading Gasol.

Gasol deserves the opportunity to finally play some competitive basketball and the Grizzlies need to start a productive rebuild. With that being said, a trade is going to end up occurring.

4 Before Start Of Season: Kemba Walker

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

There have been some ongoing rumors that the Charlotte Hornets could end up moving Kemba Walker this off-season. Although he has stated that he would like to stay with the team for a long time, if a team gives them a strong offer, it is likely that he will end up being dealt.

Walker is a very talented player and one who would be an excellent addition for any team who is looking to win in the near future. The Hornets have been struggling to remain competitive and it is likely that they are due for a rebuild. With that being said, it would not be surprising at all if a trade is made.

3 In 2019: DeMar DeRozan

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports
advertising

DeMar DeRozan was shockingly traded to the Spurs for Kawhi Leonard and he openly stated how sad he was about it. This is because DeRozan has spent the entirety of his career with the Raptors and envisioned himself finishing his career. However, now things are entirely different.

If the Spurs end up struggling and show that they are in need of a rebuild, it would not be shocking at all if the team decides to trade DeRozan before the deadline. It is clear that he is now the star player on this team, but with the Spurs losing all of their players from their championship days, a rebuild is likely coming.

2 Before Start Of Season: Kyle Korver

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Cavaliers are clearly rebuilding and that means that they will likely be trading away Kyle Korver before the start of the season. There have already been a lot of trade talk involving him, but at this present time, a deal has yet to come into fruition.

When seeing the fact that Korver is very old under NBA standards and is looking to win a championship, the Cavaliers should grant him this opportunity by trading him. It is apparent that Korver also does have a lot more trade value because of his great postseason, so they should do it before the start of the season.

1 In 2019: Anthony Davis

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports
advertising

The New Orleans Pelicans have a lot of pressure put on them for the start of the regular season. With them losing DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo to free agency, there is no question that they are not as strong as last year. If they are at the bottom of the NBA again, an Anthony Davis trade will likely happen.

There have been a plethora of rumors involving Anthony Davis over the years and one has to assume it could very well occur this season.

The Celtics are the team to look out for in a potential swap because they not only have shown interest in the past, but have enough assets to make it happen.
