As everyone knows by now, LeBron James will be a free agent this summer. Just as was the case in 2010 and 2014, the Summer of 2018 will revolve around LeBron's free agency and if he will depart Cleveland, again, or return to The Land.
There are expected to be many suitors for LeBron's services including the Los Angeles Lakers, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Houston Rockets. Actually, every team will be interested in signing the King but only a few of them have a realistic chance. The other teams will certainly make their pitches, but none of them are likely to be as creative as the one fans of the Portland Trail Blazers made.
Blazers fans have started a GoFundMe page to erect a billboard to lure the King to the Great Northwest. LeBron teaming with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum would create quite the Big Three, but Blazers fans have a different expectation of LeBron's role on the theoretical super team:
As someone who aspires to be the greatest of all-time and says he is chasing the ghost of Michael Jordan (even though MJ is still alive), LeBron likely isn't looking to settle in as a third or second option. The man has nicknamed himself "The King" after all.
The GoFundMe has set a goal of $2,000 in order to obtain the billboard and it's a little over 10 percent of the way there. The page states that the goal is to erect the billboard either during the playoffs or at the start of free agency.
This is a creative way for fans to recruit impending free agents without a tampering charge being levied. If a team or another player publicly said they wanted to play with LeBron, the NBA would crack down on them with a heavy fine at the very least. But there is nothing the NBA can do to fans who want to spend their own money in order to recruit another team's player. Expect more of this in the future and also expect LeBron to not even consider moving to Portland (sorry Blazers fans).
