The Brooklyn Nets are reportedly nearing a split with forward/center Kenneth Faried, who will join the Houston Rockets as a free agent following a waiver next week.
The Eastern Conference side announced on Saturday that they have requested waivers on the player, with The Athletic and Watch Stadium's Shams Charania having reported that the team and player were in advanced negotiations over same on Friday.
Per ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski, the buyout has been agreed to and the 29-year-old will sign with the Rockets when he clears waivers on Monday.
"The Brooklyn Nets have requested waivers on forward/center Kenneth Faried," a statement from NBA.com reads. "Brooklyn’s roster now stands at 16 players."
Faried was acquired from the Denver Nuggets during the summer along with Darrell Arthur in exchange for Isaiah Whitehead. Brooklyn also got two draft picks as part of the deal.
The player has only appeared in 12 games for the Nets since, playing just 9.8 minutes a game from which he's averaged 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds.
Late last month, Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson intimated that he wanted the player kept and that Faried hadn't requested a buyout. But it appears that something has changed over these last few weeks, and the parties are now convinced that the best way forward would be to sever ties.
"No [he hasn't asked] … I know [about the reports]," Atkinson told the New York Post. I just like him on this team. He's been really good. I just hope we can get him an opportunity. He's been fantastic. I don't feel great about it, because he's been fantastic. It's weird, some guys, they check out. He hasn't."
What This Means
Things clearly haven't worked out for Faried in Brooklyn but he could be a useful piece for the Rockets, who are desperate for a big man to come in and help fill the void left by the injured Clint Capela.
The center is expected to miss four to six weeks, following a torn ligament in his thumb and he has left Mike D'Antoni's roster with a whole lot to be desired.
Wojnarowski has also reported that the side is looking to trade Carmelo Anthony by Wednesday in order to open up a spot for Faried.
