With the NBA trade deadline just under a month away, it is time to look at all the rumors and to find out which rumors make the most sense, and which seem to obvious to actually be rumors. There are some big names that are always involved in trade talks such as DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, and other big names that are quote on quote "unhappy" with their current franchise. You also have your out of nowhere trades where there are players that were not even talked about, and all of a sudden you see that they got traded to another team.
NBA fans love and dread the NBA trade deadline because it could help your favorite team make a late playoff push, or it could deplete your thoughts about your team's chances especially if they give up their star player. The thoughts of having someone that you really love watching play for your team traded away is a scary thought to think about, but if they are not traded then you gain a huge sigh of relief. A lot of emotions go through not only the fans, but the players as well during the trade deadline. You never know what could happen and everything could change in front of your eyes just in a blink.
There are so many uncertainties that surround the trade deadline, and you really never know what to expect when it comes rolling around. With that being said here are ten trades that will surprise us and five trades that are way too obvious.
15 Surprise - Norman Powell To Oklahoma City
Norman Powell has seen his starting role and his minutes decrease due to the emergence of the rookie OG Anunoby and could easily be on the way out of the rotation as a whole. With Oklahoma City looking for someone to come provide a spark off the bench the Thunder could look to make a call up to Toronto for Norman Powell. With Oklahoma City being able to send a couple second round picks along with Josh Huestis for Norman Powell would create waves for both sides.
Toronto would get rid of a guy that it seems that they don't believe in, and Oklahoma City can get their spark of the bench in Powell. Powell has shown that he can play at the NBA level when given the minutes, and he would strive in a bench role in Oklahoma City.
14 Surprise - George Hill To Denver
George Hill has not fit into what the Sacramento Kings have wanted so far, and could be time that they move that contract and focus on the future. Hill was brought in to bring in some veteran presence for a young first round pick like De'Aaron Fox, but Fox has shown flashes of his talents while coming off the bench. Hill is starting at the moment, but Fox is definitely closing the gap and could become the starter sooner rather than later.
You sit there and look at what the Nuggets and Kings could do in order to make this trade work out and it doesn't look like a lot. However draft picks and Emmanuel Mudiay sounds like a very good offer if you're a Kings fan.
13 Obvious - Kent Bazemore To Miami
Kent Bazemore might not be as obvious as other people think, but this talented shooting guard/small forward could be on his way out of Atlanta as they are looking to find out who they are going to rebuild around. One team that could really use the talent of Kent Bazemore is the Miami Heat. Miami just lost Dion Waiters for the season due to surgery on his ankle, and the Heat should make the move to get Bazemore to replace him.
The trade that seems fair is James Johnson, and the 2020 first round selection for Kent Bazemore.
This works for both sides because Miami gets a good young threat that can play either shooting guard or small forward while also being effective from the three point line, and on the defensive end. Bazemore getting moved might seem like a shock, but you heard it hear first as one of the obvious trades of the trade deadline.
12 Surprise - Lou Williams To Washington
The Washington Wizards are in desperate need of a solid scoring option to come off the bench as they ranked 19th in Bench points per game with (34.2 PPG) coming off the bench. One player that would help the Wizards' second unit is Lou Williams. Williams is a proven scorer and is a former sixth man of the year award winner. Seeing what he is doing in Los Angeles for the Clippers right now is unreal, and imagine how effective he could be in Washington coming off the bench.
Washington needs a scorer that can come off the bench and provide significant rest for their star studded back court in John Wall and Bradley Beal. Look for Washington to make a call to the Clippers at the trade deadline and to get a scorer to come off the bench to help them make a playoff run.
11 Surprise - Kenneth Faried To Brooklyn
Kenneth Faried has seen his minutes take a big time hit as the Nuggets have gotten their breakout star in Nikola Jokic through the draft and the signing of Paul Millsap does not help him either. Faried is a dominant rebounder and deserves to get starter minutes on another team. One team that could call about Faried is none other than the Brooklyn Nets. Yes Brooklyn is fourth in the league in Rebounds Per Game, but they could use a dominant guy to play the power forward spot so that guys like Rondae Hollis-Jefferson can play their actual position.
Brooklyn could send a high draft pick and a name like Timofey Mozgov for Kenneth Faried.
Look for the Nets to gain a step on their future by going out and acquiring Faried from Denver.
10 Obvious - Thon Maker To Los Angeles Clippers
Thon Maker has not really blossomed into the big man that the Milwaukee Bucks wished he would be and it looks like that he will be an essential piece to a big trade that is going to come at the trade deadline. The Bucks could use Maker as a piece that can help them make a big move not only for this season, but for the future as well. That team that would want Maker to be a part of that big deal is the Los Angeles Clippers.
The trade that we all know will most likely happen will be discussed a little later on. The Clippers would use Maker in the starting role when he gets traded and could help the Clippers realize if he is the future of their franchise at the center position.
9 Surprise - Willy Hernangomez To San Antonio
The worst thing that could of happened to Willy Hernangomez's career was the Knicks trading for a big man, and what did the Knicks do they traded Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder and got back Enes Kanter and more in return. Kanter is a former third overall selection and is a solid player, Hernangomez has not gotten a chance to show that last year wasn't a fluke, and the Knicks should trade him to a team that he could be of some value to.
The San Antonio Spurs could use the 6'11 center from Spain to be apart of their rotation. Hernangomez would help San Antonio who are in the top fifteen in rebounding, and help make them a top ten team in rebounding. He can be a double double machine that could be very effective to help stars like Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge get even more looks. Look for San Antonio to take a chance and to make a move for Hernangomez.
8 Surprise - Julius Randle To Phoenix
Julius Randle is a former top ten pick out of the University of Kentucky and has not found his role in Luke Walton's system. Randle could very well be on his way out of Los Angeles sooner rather than later and one team that would be interested in him would be the Phoenix Suns. He is easily better than anybody else that they have at power forward on their depth chart, and could be a good fit to play with another former Kentucky Wildcat Devin Booker.
The Suns are looking to find an identity and acquiring a guy like Julius Randle could help set the tone.
A starting five that would include a player to be named later, Devin Booker, T.J. Warren, Julius Randle and Alex Len could very well be a good young core to have for the future in the Western Conference. Look for Phoenix to make a call to Los Angeles sooner rather than later.
7 Obvious - Nikola Mirotic To Detroit
Nikola Mirotic has been one of the better names that has been rumored to be on the trading block and there is one obvious trade scenario that would help him make a team better and that is if he gets traded to the Detroit Pistons. This move would not only let Tobias Harris to go back to playing more of the small forward position, but this trade could make Detroit a lock for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Imagine Reggie Jackson, Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Nikola Mirotic and Andre Drummond as your starting five that seems like a good starting five especially in the Eastern Conference. This trade would have to be something along the lines of Jon Leuer, Stanley Johnson and a draft pick for Nikola Mirotic. Look for Detroit to make this phone call as soon as possible.
6 Surprise - Nikola Mirotic To Utah
Now I know what you are thinking. What about the whole trade scenario to Detroit that you just talked about? That is the obvious one, but if Mirotic wasn't traded to the Pistons it would be shocking. Mirotic to Utah has been reported as the Jazz have expressed interest. Now I believe that Detroit is the smarter move, because the Bulls can get more for Mirotic out of the Pistons then they could from the Jazz.
The Jazz have shown interest and could very well pull out some stops to get him. Nikola Mirotic is the type of stretch four that could help the Jazz out, but the question is what do they have to offer to give the Chicago Bulls for him. If Mirotic to the Jazz happens it will be very shocking, especially if Detroit gives the Bulls a respectable offer for Mirotic.
5 Surprise - Shabazz Muhammad To Memphis
Shabazz Muhammad has not gotten a chance to prove if he is a starter in the NBA. With the Timberwolves being really good they could use Shabazz to make a move that could help them improve their bench so that they can make a deep run in the Western Conference. One team he could definitely get a starting role with is the Memphis Grizzlies. With the Grizzlies looking to be in rebuilding mode, seeing if an athletic small forward like Muhammad could make your team that much better could be something that could intrigue them.
Memphis could be a part of a three team trade where they would land Muhammad and some draft picks for one of their top guys so that the Grizzlies can build for the future.
Look for this move to make more sense as the trade deadline approaches.
4 Obvious - Tyreke Evans To Cleveland
Tyreke Evans has had a resurrection on his NBA career in Memphis as he has shown that he has the talents of a former top five pick in the NBA Draft. With Tyreke Evans actually healthy it makes it even more likely that he could help contribute on a contender. One contender that would love to help off the bench is Cleveland. Now I can understand when people say they don't need any help they will be fine.
Here's the thing Cleveland could move one of their expensive contracts in order to get someone who can contribute off the bench right now. Especially with that talent that Evans has with his ability to play either point guard, shooting guard, or small forward. Look for the Cavaliers to make a move for Tyreke Evans to help lead the second unit as they look to do their best to keep LeBron from leaving.
3 Surprise - Tyreke Evans To New York
Now going from an obvious Tyreke Evans trade to a shocking Tyreke Evans trade which involves him getting moved to the New York Knicks. Evans has shown his worth in the NBA when Mike Conley went down with an injury. He has proven that he is worth being a starter in this league and could provide a spark for a young Knicks team that looks to make the playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference.
Imagining Evans with Kristaps Porzingis and Enes Kanter sounds like a nice team to build around in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks should be looking to make this move as soon as possible. Especially with Tim Hardaway Jr. out for an extended period of time Evans could help the Knicks' back court provide some points.
2 Surprise - Jordan Clarkson To Phoenix
Yes the other piece getting moved from the Lakers is none other than Jordan Clarkson. Clarkson would be a good fit with Devin Booker and could help bring the Phoenix Suns back from being a laughing stock in the Western Conference. Now that the Suns have moved on from Eric Bledsoe it is time for them to look at grabbing Clarkson to be their point guard of the future.
This move not only helps you get better right now, but it also helps create a foundation to potentially grab some talent in free agency and you can also build through the draft. Clarkson has the potential to be a good starting point guard in the NBA, and with the right fit he could explode into a superstar talent. Phoenix should talk to the Lakers about making this move.
1 Obvious - DeAndre Jordan To Milwaukee
Now the most obvious trade that is being talked about and that could very well happen at the trade deadline is DeAndre Jordan getting traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Milwaukee has being eyeing DeAndre for a while now and with a good foundation of Eric Bledsoe, Jabari Parker, Khris Middleton, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, it could be the perfect fit for one of the best quote on quote centers in the game.
This makes sense with Thon Maker rumored to be going to the Clippers as well.
The deal should resemble something like Thon Maker, John Henson, and some draft picks for DeAndre Jordan.
The Clippers should take this offer hands down because they are getting a good package for Jordan and can cut his salary right out of their cap space.
