There was a point in time where WWE fans thought they were set to see Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey go head-to-head —

on more than one occasion, in fact. Despite that being the obvious storyline direction at numerous times, WWE never pulled the trigger on booking this headline match. With Ronda Rousey’s future as a professional wrestler up in the air, it’s unclear whether or not this match will ever take place, but WWE should be doing all they can to make it a reality.

Lynch And Rousey Were Supposed To Face Off At Survivor Series

Back in 2018, with Rousey undergoing her rookie year as a WWE superstar, and reigning as the Raw Women’s Champion, she was set to face SmackDown Women’s Champion, Lynch, at Survivor Series, all in the name of brand warfare. With Rousey’s huge status as a former UFC headliner, Lynch’s rising stock as one of the most popular figures in all of wrestling at the time, in addition to stellar promo work from Lynch, fans were hugely anticipating their showdown.

Tragedy struck, as Lynch received a blow to the face from Nia Jax during a huge brawl on a Raw in the lead up to Survivor Series, receiving a concussion. This ruled her out of competing in the match, and fans were understandably gutted by this. Charlotte Flair stood in to replace Lynch, with her and Rousey having an entertaining match despite a disqualification finish, acting as a precursor for what was to come in the lead up to Wrestlemania. With the investment fans had in Lynch taking on Rousey, many fans predicted that the match would instead be moved to Wrestlemania, and that it would be better off for it with a prolonged build and extra suspense.

Charlotte Flair Prevented Fans From Seeing The One-On-One Match

Becky Lynch emerged victorious during the 2019 Royal Rumble, setting up what was sure to be a challenge to Rousey for title at the Grandest Stage of Them All. What followed, however, was the reinsertion of Charlotte Flair into the story, convoluting the feud, setting up a triple threat match for both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Titles, in a ‘Winner Take All’ match.

The match was certainly historic, with the triple threat earning the main event position, marking it as the first ever women’s match to headline a Wrestlemania. The three women were undoubtedly some of the biggest names in the company regardless of gender. Unfortunately for the three involved, the match came at the end of the long, arduous night of wrestling, and resulted in an underwhelming match in which the fans were simply too worn out to get pumped up, despite the anticipation leading into the match. Becky Lynch would pin Ronda Rousey in a botched pinfall, but rightfully walk out holding the two championship belts. The moment was great in the end, but that didn’t detract from the fact that it should have been just a one-on-one contest.

The Future Of Ronda Rousey In WWE Is Uncertain

Following Wrestlemania, Rousey wouldn’t be seen again in a WWE ring, opting to focus on starting a family after her one-year run with the company, living out her dream as a WWE superstar. Despite rumors surfacing time and time again when the time draws close to the Big Four PPVs, Rousey has yet to emerge, or even appear close to a return, and it’s not clear whether or not she ever will, especially considering the birth of her child within the last year. Lynch also started a family too, just returning recently to take up the reigns and become Smackdown Women’s Champion once again.

The positive outlook when considering the possibility for this huge money match is that Rousey is somebody who can be brought in and not wrestle a ton of matches, in fact, with the name value she holds, having just one match would likely be accepted, especially given the consistent quality of her PPV contests during her run. If she were to return at any point, a match with Lynch needs to be of the upmost priority. There is an easy story to tell, with Lynch being the one to defeat Rousey on her way out. There could be a story of pride, revenge, and a huge sense of unfinished business, as their singles match never came to fruition.

Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey WWE Raw

A Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey match somewhere in the near future, ideally at Wrestlemania, would a huge attraction match for WWE to put forth. If the pair were able to rekindle the heat and tension that they shared between themselves during the original feud — which is very likely given the talents of both women — a showdown against one another could be magic, and it could forgive past instances where WWE passed on having the match.
