Earlier in the night, Edge won a battle royal to earn the right of battling John Cena in the main event. Running with another rematch of a feud that had taken place throughout the year was questionable, especially since Edge was the heel, with a disadvantage going into the match having already competed.

It was a fine match but with a lot of interference towards the end, as DX and Randy Orton both made their presence known, leading to Cena winning. Cena pulled out some different moves to what he usually does, which was nice.

Six of Raw’s biggest stars did battle in this huge main event, with the action rarely getting slow due to the massive number of individuals involved. Neither Cena nor Edge overly played into the finish though with this being an elimination match.

All-Star Ten Man Tag Team Match WWE Raw

This was billed as an All-Star WrestleMania match, and when looking at those involved, it was certainly a star-studded affair. The team of John Cena, the returning legend Ricky Steamboat, Rey Mysterio, CM Punk, and Jeff Hardy defeated the heel team of Chris Jericho, Edge, Big Show, Kane, and Matt Hardy.

It was a fun multi-man match, and with the names involved, the crowd were fully invested in proceedings. WWE often does multi-person matches well, and this was no different.

With their rivalry continually on the rise, John Cena and Edge did battle over the WWE Championship, this time inside a Steel Cage to raise the intensity even more, following other matches over the course of the year.

This was designed to end this particular chapter of their rivalry, and it did that well with an enjoyable matchup between the two. There was some overbooking and interference which wasn’t ideal, but overall, it put a decisive end to this part of their story together.

Edge and John Cena were given the main event spot at SummerSlam in 2006, and whilst the match wasn’t quite up the standard of being in that position, it was still fine for what it was, not outstaying its welcome at just 15-minutes in length.

Things slowed down as Edge dominated Cena for large portions, but the crowd were surprisingly behind Cena during his comeback, even with this being in a period in which Cena was largely hated by the WWE Universe.

Whilst Kofi Kingston was on his way to the ring, Edge attacked him from behind, taking his spot in one of the more unique and notable moments in the Elimination Chamber match’s history. Edge would go on to defeat Rey Mysterio, Mike Knox, Kane, Chris Jericho, and the World Heavyweight Champion, John Cena.

Edge would pin Cena, kickstarting their rivalry once again ahead of WrestleMania 25, where they would do battle in a triple threat match, which also involved The Big Show.

4 Edge Vs John Cena, Unforgiven 2006 (4.25 Stars)

This was the best singles bout between Cena and Edge during the year of 2006, with it being a fun and chaotic Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match, capped off with a huge AA from atop a ladder, which sent Edge through multiple tables.

Cena won the match despite it taking place in Edge’s hometown, which was certainly a questionable choice, as the fans didn’t want Cena to win. That being said, the two men did a great job at keeping the crowd heavily invested, even if it wasn’t the absolute greatest TLC match of all time.

3 John Cena Vs Edge Vs Triple H, Backlash 2006 (4.25 Stars)

Triple threat matches can often be criticized due to following the trope of there being two people fighting whilst someone else is on the outside of the ring. However, with Cena and Triple H having unsettled animosity, and with Edge being the opportunistic heel awaiting the best moment to capitalize, this match started in a high gear and never let up.

The crowd were invested, and the three men did a good job to ensure that the action remained enjoyable and well-paced. Cena would pick up the victory, but there were a few near-falls to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats.

As far as fatal four-way matches go, this is up there with the best in WWE history. It was a smoothly wrestled match with it not feeling like there was a foot put wrong at any point.

Cena would ultimately retain his WWE Championship, overcoming three of his biggest rivals in Randy Orton, Edge, and Shawn Michaels.
