Having spent years feeling like it did not matter to mainstream wrestling markets, tag team wrestling has made quite the comeback over the past several years. Teams like The Young Bucks and The Briscoes have put on spectacles across the independent scene, as well as Triple H's vision of NXT featuring high caliber tag action, something AEW has done the same with in its first 3 years.

With in-ring action being more versatile and entertaining than ever before, being one of the world's greatest tag teams is not an easy feat to accomplish. With so much talent and so many places to look, there are only a few teams that can be considered the best of the best, regardless of their home promotion.

UPDATE: 2022/12/07 07:30 EST BY DANNY DJELJOSEVIC

These days, tag team wrestling is in a great place thanks to not only AEW’s strong (and stacked!) tag team division but also WWE’s renewed focus on featuring tag team wrestling. Ten slots isn’t nearly enough space to talk about all the great tag teams currently competing in pro wrestling, so let’s go back and take a look at five more duos that have been killing it this year, especially in the months since this list initially dropped. In addition to some great international tag teams, there are also a couple of teams that reached the top of their divisions after the initial publication date, or who otherwise put on some incredible matches.

UPDATE: 2023/01/03 07:30 EST BY ANDREW KELLY

Tag team wrestling has had its turbulent periods, particularly when it comes to WWE and how they’ve had a tendency to treat the style as a complete afterthought. With WWE being the major powerhouse in professional wrestling, it means that it can sometimes be difficult for tag team wrestling to thrive elsewhere, as everyone has to try doubly as hard to make it mean something. In the present day though, it feels as though tag team wrestling is having a few years in which it is experiencing a boom, with even WWE giving some good spotlight to tag teams. The creation of AEW and their great tag team division has also helped, and it has grown the stock of many teams around the globe. Across several promotions in different countries, there are currently some brilliant tag teams that fans need to know about.

17 Alpha Academy

The team of Chad Gable and Otis wasn’t too prominent at first, but they have slowly developed into a great team with brilliant chemistry, partly due to them being real friends outside the business.

Their camaraderie matched with technical and explosive in-ring work makes them a very well-rounded duo and a necessary part of Raw’s tag team division. Though they have dipped a little from the start of the year, they are talented enough to rise to the occasion when they are needed in the spotlight and Tag Title picture. Their feud with RK-Bro early in 2022 is a clear example of their talents.

16 Pretty Deadly

Whether it be in NXT UK or the US version of NXT, Pretty Deadly have been a hit in every part of their WWE journey. Their unique personalities and unteachable chemistry had pushed them to NXT Tag Team Title gold over the last year.

They feel as though they are already ready for WWE’s main roster, and they would undoubtedly be better than some of the teams that are already wrestling on Raw and SmackDown. They have been a breakout act in 2022.

15 Street Profits

The Street Profits

Though the Street Profits aren’t as hot as they were a year ago, the duo of Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford are a hugely popular act who manage to bring their A-game each and every week.

With a match-of-the-year candidate against The Usos in 2022, they proved themselves to be top-tier performers when given the chance. With a few Tag Team Title reigns under the belt, there is a lot more to come from this team.

14 The Creed Brothers

The Creed Brothers NXT Tag Team Champions Cropped

Currently seen as the faces of NXT 2.0's Tag Team Division, The Creed Brothers have not only proven to be one of the best young tag teams in all of wrestling, but are more than likely to be featured as a major team within WWE for years to come. Debuting as a part of the Diamond Mine faction led by Roderick Strong, Julius and Brutus Creed finally tasted tag-team gold in the Summer of 2022.

Both under 30 years old, The Creed Brothers are not only one of the most promising, talented tag teams in all of wrestling right now, but are also extremely young as well. While other top teams in the industry have been wrestling for years and will retire sooner than later, the Creed Brothers have longevity on their side!

13 The New Day

The New Day WWE

It may have seemed like a major oversight that The New Day weren’t on this list to begin with, but the group suffered a lot of setbacks in 2022, including injuries to both Xavier Woods and Big E. Does anyone even remember they had a WrestleMania match?

That said, The New Day’s second half of the year has been solid, with Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston taking on the Viking Raiders in a shockingly great “Viking Rules” match and rekindling their rivalry with The Usos in an attempt to keep their tag team title record.

12 Damage CTRL

Damge CTRL

By many fans’ estimations, Bayley’s faction Damage CTRL hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, with the group’s overall booking being rather strange. But it’s undeniable that Bayley, IYO SKY, and Dakota Kai are all great in-ring performers, with SKY and Kai functioning as a strong tag team. Already two-time tag team champions, Damage CTRL are a bit hampered by being in a tag team division that still needs to be built up, but they’ve been able to put on great matches against opponents like Alexa Bliss and Asuka as well as Raquel Rodriguez and Shotzi.

11 Black Desire

STARDOM's Black Desire: Momo Watanabe and Starlight Kid

In 2021, rising STARDOM rookie Starlight Kid hit a new gear in her career by joining the heel faction Oedo Tai. The following year, she formed the tag team Black Desire with stablemate Momo Watanabe — one of the best wrestlers in STARDOM — and quickly captured the tag team belts, the Goddesses of Stardom Championship.

While that reign only lasted 40 days, the hits keep coming, with Starlight and Momo not only capturing trios title gold, but also putting on strong performances in the 2022 Goddesses of Stardom Tag League tournament.

10 Aussie Open

One of the newest additions to Will Ospreay's United Empire faction in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Aussie Open have already made quite the name for themselves both on NJPW Strong, in RevPRO, and in AEW as well, featuring alongside Ospreay in the lead-up to Forbidden door and in the AEW Trios Tournament.

For those missing out on Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher, the duo currently hold the NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Championship and look to be one of the fastest rising tag teams in wrestling right now. Keep your eyes peeled on Aussie Open, as anytime they hit the ring, they often tend to steal the show.

9 Dangerous Tekkers

Having just reunited for the first time since April, Zack Sabre Jr. and Taichi have begun tagging once again as the Dangerous Tekkers in NJPW. With ZSJ having made his AEW debut earlier this year against Claudio Castagnoli at Forbidden Door, and with both having thrilled in the 2022 G1 Climax, the latter half of this year will see the duo looking to recapture the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship.

Prior to the two taking a break from tagging, these two were regarded as one of the best tag teams in the world, having elevated New Japan's tag team division to a new level. With them back on the market, the Tekkers could see themselves rise up the ranks in the next few months!

8 The Usos

The Usos as WWE Tag Team Champions

The current top dogs in WWE's Tag Team Division, Jimmy and Jey Uso have remained successful for years as a staple of both Raw and SmackDown. While there are those who often debate and suggest that The Usos are the greatest tag team in the world, that just is not the case. On top of not having the variety that other teams have, the duo has felt the same for a while now.

That is not to say that the tag-team unity of The Bloodline is bad, because that could not be further from the truth. Despite being in a bit of a wasteland for tag-team wrestling right now on Raw and SmackDown, the Usos do regularly deliver high quality matches, and carry the tag division in WWE currently. That being said, they remain a far cry from being the best tag team in the world.

7 The Motor City Machine Guns

Motor City Machine Guns

A team as legendary as The Young Bucks, The Motor City Machine Guns have done nearly everything possible for a tag team in wrestling. Mainly being featured in ROH and Impact Wrestling, Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin's names will forever be etched in tag-team wrestling history books.

Currently thriving as a part of Impact Wrestling's growing tag-team division, the Machine Guns are back at it once again, delivering some of the best tag-team wrestling in the world with teams like the Good Brothers, Ace Austin & Chris Bey, and OGK.

6 The Acclaimed

the acclaimed

Formed in the 2020 pandemic era of All Elite Wrestling, The Acclaimed have grown into arguably AEW’s most successful homegrown act. Not only are Max Caster and Anthony Bowens solid in the ring together, but have managed to hit a popularity with crowds approaching New Age Outlaws levels thanks to their “scissoring” taunt with former Outlaw Billy Gunn. In September of 2022, The Acclaimed not only put on a banger of a match with Swerve in Our Glory at All Out, but also defeated them weeks later to earn their first tag team championship.

5 Magical Sugar Rabbits

Tokyo Joshi Pro's Magical Sugar Rabbits: Mizuki and Yuka Sakazaki

Often overshadowed by STARDOM, the DDT-affiliated Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling boasts one of the best women’s tag teams in the world in Magical Sugar Rabbits, the team of AEW regular Yuka Sakazaki and Mizuki. From 2021 to 2022, the Rabbits enjoyed a 273 day reign with the Princess Tag Team Championship, making Mizuki and Sakazaki the only tag team to win the belts twice. While they lost them over the summer in 2022, Magical Sugar Rabbits remain standouts whenever they step in the ring together.

4 The Lucha Bros

Lucha Bros AEW Tag Team Champions

Two of the most recognizable stars in AEW, Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero M make up the team of The Lucha Bros. Since 2019, this duo has been one of the most popular acts in AEW, and in 2021, they finally received their due, as they would become AEW World Tag Team Champions in a legendary Cage Match against the Young Bucks at All Out!

With injuries plaguing Fenix almost regularly, the team's stock has fallen over time, though the fact remains that they are one of the best tag teams in the world, and are easily the most consistent lucha-style tag-team around.

3 The Briscoes

Briscoes AEW ROH

The face of ROH's tag team division for years, Mark and Jay Briscoe are real-life brothers turned badass redneck wrestlers. On top of their impressive tag-team career, both men have also had singles success on their own within Ring of Honor.

It is in their tag team work however that most fans recognize their greatness, with thrilling bouts against The Kingdom, The Young Bucks, and now FTR being some of their best work. Back in ROH under the leadership of Tony Khan, it seems like The Briscoes will only continue to add to their legacy.

2 The Young Bucks

The Young Bucks with Brandon Cutler

Often compared to The Usos, Matt and Nick Jackson are another brother tag-team duo that has made their names through tag-team wrestling. While some will try and level the idea of a lack of psychology within the Young Bucks' in-ring work, that could not be further from the truth. The duo manage to always deliver a story when needed inside of the ropes, while also delivering some of the best wrestling on the planet.

Whether it be their legendary matches against The Briscoes, FTR, The Lucha Bros, or any number of teams they have been put against, The Young Bucks are not only one of the best teams in wrestling but are a team that can give anyone the best matches of their career on a moment's notice.

1 FTR

ftr aew roh

Coming off a mixed-bag run in WWE as The Revival, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler jumped ship to AEW in the summer of 2020, instantly jumping into the fire with feuds against Hangman Page & Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks. While their time being #AllElite seemed to be all over the place at first, late 2021 and all of 2022 has been nothing short of amazing for FTR.

Having once again became recognized as one of, if not the best tag-team in all of wrestling, the duo has lit up screens with some of the best tag team wrestling in the world on a regular basis. Getting to shine both in AEW and outside of the company, the two men have become the pinnacle of tag-team wrestling (pun intended), representing AEW, ROH, AAA, and now New Japan as the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions.
