Since debuting on the main roster, Bianca Belair has been the only one to be able to hold a candle to anyone not named Charlotte, Bayley, Sasha, or Becky. She is not only one of the best athletes on the roster, but the company has done a terrific job at letting her be an underdog babyface who doesn’t let a lot of people use her as a doormat. But it’s easy to see why fans were a little trepidatious about that booking.

She got to main event WrestleMania with Sasha Banks and win the Smackdown title. Four months, 26 seconds later, and the return of The Man for a brief moment made it seem like everything Belair had accomplished was now out the window but in despair and defeat, a tail of redemption began. But at WrestleMania 38, the EST overcame and finally dethroned Big Time Becks in a shining example of what a long-term wrestling angle could be.

The EST Movement

While the fans weren’t chanting “EST, EST,” the quick defeat of Bianca Belair still had the fans reeling. It was easy to start a turn for Becky Lynch while building more and more great babyface heat for Bianca. Rather than have a constant series of matches Between each other in a never-ending feud that would bore the crowd, the two top females of Raw seldom came together for matches. That is what made their encounter at WrestleMania even more epic. It wasn’t just another match between the two, it was a long-awaited clash of egos, lifestyles, ring work, champion, and challenger. Bianca overcame all sorts of hurdles and challenges from the likes of Doudrop, she averted disaster when Becky tried to cut her hair and showed the world that in a one on one contest where she wasn’t blindsided, she could not only hang in the “Big Time,” but dethrone the champion.

The Time Apart Made The Anticipation Fonder

While they collided a few times after SummerSlam 2021, fans got to see an organic storyline between challenger and champion get carried separately and then finally come together on the road to WrestleMania. Bianca spent months showing how strong she was hoisting Doudrop over her head for the KOD while constantly gaining even more adoration from the fans before finally winning the Elimination Chamber and earning her shot at Becky Lynch at WrestleMania. Becky, in the meantime, did exactly what she said she was going to do — pick up exactly where she left off before starting a family.

She took on challenger after challenger, slightly tweaking her in-ring game to show she was a heel and completely diving into a new dimension of The Man. She became more and more deluded that the fans turned on her and her story and became Big Time Becks in the process. She defeated any and all challengers including former bestie, Charlotte and her idol Lita. The stage was set not just for two hated rivals to clash, but for a strong and believable challenger and a strong and believable champion — who was going to win?!

A Real WrestleMania Match

BIanca Belair Wins World Title

WrestleMania is the place where big storylines finally conclude. This was no different. But the match even felt different. After the “stupendous” (sorry) entrances, the two combatants didn’t just get down to business, they fought like heck to win the match and beat the heck out of each other. While plenty of fans love wild spot fests and never-ending kick outs from 73 finishing moves, for nearly twenty minutes Bianca and Becky had what felt like a real fight. Each woman found ways to counter each other’s attacks. Each woman constantly went for pinfalls and submissions since that is the way you win a wrestling match. From a booking perspective, the right woman won and Bianca Belair is now once again on top of the mountain.

A story for Bianca that began at WrestleMania 37 culminated at WrestleMania 38, the wild twist that happened at SummerSlam 2021 only helped to once again show how vulnerable Bianca is while showcasing just how talented she is on her way back to the championship.

Even in defeat, Becky Lynch proves, she is the “GOAT.” She found a way to go from not just the most beloved babyface on the roster, but the most over in the entire industry. She actually was able to do what Stone Cold Steve Austin couldn’t and that’s become a nasty heel that the fans actually hated and paid money to see her knocked off.

Fans love to bemoan WWE storytelling but when it’s done right, it looks exactly like Bianca Belair vs. Becky Lynch and if they keep going back to this style of storytelling and even match styles, they might find a way to bring new viewers in and silence their critics.
