Roman Reigns successfully defended his Universal Championship against Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel 2021, but the victory did not come without controversy.

Lesnar inadvertently knocked out referee Charles Robinson when he performed his F5 finisher on Reigns. Moments later, Jimmy and Jey Uso showed up and delivered a double Superkick to Lesnar, and Reigns proceeded to hit the latter with the Universal title belt. A second official rushed out and counted the three-pin, giving Reigns the win.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that the controversial finish at Crown Jewel was done to "set up" several matches between Reigns and Lesnar. Meltzer also wrote that their program "is likely heading to WrestleMania, since right now there doesn’t appear to be anything on the horizon bigger."

Many fans have been holding out hope for a dream match between Reigns and his cousin, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But the wrestler-turned-actor isn't expected for WrestleMania 38, and WrestleMania 39 in Hollywood appears to be the more likely time and place for a potential match.

Crown Jewel 2021 marked Lesnar's first wrestling match since day two of WrestleMania 36, where he lost the WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre. Lesnar would go on a 16-month hiatus before making an unexpected return at the end of SummerSlam 2021, confronting the Universal Champion as a babyface.

It was recently reported that Lesnar isn't scheduled to wrestle again here in 2021, and that he'll compete at the Royal Rumble 2022 event in St. Louis, Missouri on Jan. 29.

Plans Can Always Change

WrestleMania 38 is still over five months away, so the plans for the main event could always change. Reigns vs. Lesnar is the rumored main event for now, but you never know when Vince McMahon and company may call for something else. We have already seen Reigns vs. Lesnar in two WrestleMania main events (WrestleMania 31 and WrestleMania 34), so McMahon may end up feeling inclined to try something new.
