However, despite Drew McIntyre leading the way through the COVID-19 era of WWE, many felt that he was over-pushed to where he was getting too many title shots. Even after losing his WWE Championship for the last time, many criticized WWE's booking of Drew McIntyre constantly being in the mix of world title contention.
While there's no denying that WWE can utilize more of its talent, Drew McIntyre's involvement with the WWE Championship stems from WWE's lack of building star power rather than Drew McIntyre himself. There is a lack of depth regarding main-event level talent, but Drew McIntyre himself isn't to blame.
WWE's lack of credible main-event level babyfaces during its COVID-19 era didn't give them many options. Seth Rollins was getting rejected as Champion, and Roman Reigns wasn't getting the intended babyface reactions at the time.
Because of this, one can argue that they had no other choice but to insert Drew McIntyre as a believable champion. Even if some thought he wasn't ready for that position, McIntyre deserves credit for at least stepping up to a role that gets the most scrutiny from critics and fans alike.

After winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36 in front of no attendees, Drew McIntyre was at an all-time disadvantage for someone whose given the role as the number-one babyface of the company.
Considering every superstar who's been the top babyface receives their fair share of criticism, Drew McIntyre's champion reigns had many obstacles alongside performing in front of no fans. Drew McIntyre wasn't the perfect champion, but he was arguably one of the most deserving wrestlers on the roster to be carrying the WWE Championship during WWE's COVID-19 era. Not just in a sense where he was protected to look strong but the talent he showcased while being WWE Champion.
One can observe the many high-profile matches during his multiple reigns as champion. Drew McIntyre constantly delivered stellar performances in almost every big-time bout. From hard-hitting heavyweight clashes with Randy Orton and Roman Reigns, for instance, Drew McIntyre has shown countless times that his abilities in the ring are deserving of a WWE Championship reign.

Drew McIntyre's past title reigns are one of the reasons why he's currently thriving as the number one babyface on Smackdown. Whether Drew McIntyre has gained detractors from being WWE Champion, he's already an established name because of what he accomplished during WWE's COVID-19 era. That warrants Drew McIntyre the credit he deserves as one of the WWE's most recent success stories.
