Edge tends to take the opportunity to hit a spear on his opponent when they are not expecting it. On the October 21, 2005, episode of SmackDown, Rey Mysterio was in a heated battle with JBL when suddenly Edge's music hit.

Before Mysterio had the chance to realize it, Edge was already behind him. The spear he hit flipped Mysterio around and caused him to land on his neck and shoulders.

9 Edge's Mid-air Spear To Rob Van Dam - SmackDown (November 1, 2001)

Edge hadn't yet reached main event status when he battled Rob Van Dam for the Hardcore Championship on the November 1, 2001, episode of SmackDown. The anything-goes battle saw both men bring a level of athleticism and intensity that made audiences take notice of them. As RVD was going for a launching move off a steel chair, Edge countered with a spear in mid-air. Unfortunately, Edge ended up on the losing side that night thanks to a sneak attack by Test.

Steel cages matches are devastating enough, but adding a top rope spear from the Rated-R Superstar makes going through the ordeal a hellish experience. Edge was embroiled in a feud against Kurt Angle and the two were looking to prove who was the best. In their steel cage match on SmackDown, Edge prevented Angle from escaping the cage and locked eyes on his opponent.
