For many years, athletes have been superstitious about engaging in 'physical activity' before competing. They've shared similar thoughts of the ancient Greeks and Romans such as the statement that abstinence will contribute to heavier aggression and an improved rest. Despite a lack of scientific evidence, the late boxer Muhammad Ali was a famous pre-competition abstainer who avoided sex for up to six weeks before a fight. Five Italian scholars said, "If you have more than 10 hours before competition, go wild. But keep it in your pants within two hours of toeing the start line." Furthermore, orthopaedic surgeon and professor of sports and exercise medicine Nicola Maffulli said, "From a physiological standpoint, those time limits are sensible and safe and shouldn’t impact aerobic performance." But Maffulli said it was a grain of salt since nothing has been proven about this debatable topic.
Regardless of the abundance or absence of scientific evidence, there will be some athletes who think about 'doing it' before competing in a sporting event. This may (or may not) increase their performance on the field, court or ice, but they have the right to do whatever they want. You might recognize some of these athletes because of their publicized lives. You might have to look up some names on Google because they haven't been in the spotlight for quite some time. Either way, we're pretty sure that you're going to enjoy this well-put together list of 15 athletes who get it on before competing. Keep reading please!
15 Hope Solo
As you should already know, Hope Solo is an American soccer goalkeeper, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and a World Champion. Solo is one of the biggest names in the United States. She played college soccer at the University of Washington.
In 2008, Solo has talked about sex-crazed Olympic athletes as well as the fact that the women's team partied with actor and producer Vince Vaughn and showed up to the Today Show a little inebriated. But she's not a saint either. She just happened to get away with sneaking an unnamed celebrity into her room after winning a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Solo is one of the world's greatest goalkeepers in the world of soccer. She may not be the most beautiful woman in the world, but she's strong on her own two feet, and that's just as beautiful as a pretty face. It's no surprise that she has been a naughty gal.
14 Aaron Rodgers
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers also knows the scoop on rest and relaxation. After all, Rodgers' mantra is 'R-E-L-A-X' and there's no doubt that he has incorporated it into his life. Well, at least for the most part. His fallout with his family was first mentioned on Season 12 of The Bachelorette when his younger brother Jordan told JoJo Fletcher that he missed his brother a lot and it was complicated, but they're all hoping for the best.
On a more positive note, Rodgers' ex-girlfriend Olivia Munn dished about the couple's bedroom life on a Thursday night edition of 'Watch What Happens Live,' but didn't reveal anything too specific. When guest Padma Lakshmi asked Munn if she could get intimate with A-Rod the night before a game, Munn responded: "There’s no rules, by the way. It’s just doesn’t happen usually because there’s a lot to do...But usually yes. I try to have as much as I can." There you have it—a sneak peek behind the curtains.
13 Michael Phelps
There are plenty of American swimmers, but Michael Phelps is arguably the most popular name in the world of swimming. Phelps is currently married to his wife Nicole Johnson (former Miss California USA) and is a proud father to the couple's son Boomer Robert Phelps.
But anyone who has paid attention and/or participated in #OlympicsTwitter noticed an increase in 'Michael Phelps likes to get kinky' jokes when Phelps took off his robe and showed off his nice collection of big purple dots all over his body. Those purple dots were actually a result of cupping, an ancient Chinese practice that relieves blockages in the body's natural energy and blood flow for a better and faster recovery. Of course, some people tweeted that cupping sounded kinky, which is a legitimate point as most Olympic athletes have had sex before and after competition. And, Phelps is reportedly one of those kinky athletes.
12 Darryl Strawberry
Former MLB right fielder Darryl Strawberry had a long 17-year career in the league, leading the New York Mets to the 1983 World Series and New York Yankees to the 1996, 1998, and 1999 World Series. He was one of the most feared sluggers in the world of baseball and was known for his tremendous home runs, intimidating presence in the batter's box with his six-foot-six frame, and long, looping swing that drew comparisons to Hall of Famer Ted Williams.
Strawberry also dealt with a lot of issues off the field. His drug addiction—including cocaine abuse—led to three suspensions before his career ended in 1999. He also admitted that he picked women out of the crowd to join him in the clubhouse in between innings. He told the Bleacher Report, "Between innings. It worked out well, just how crazy it was...It kind of worked out that way. You point [a woman] out and tell the kid [to go get her]."
Since then, Strawberry's life changed for the better. He's a born-again Christian who serves as an ordained minister and author.
11 Ronda Rousey
While her MMA career seems to be all but over, Ronda Rousey was the most dominant woman in mixed martial arts a couple of years ago. Rousey took the UFC by storm, being crowned the promotion's first women's bantamweight champion and going undefeated through 12 fights, before suffering a knockout loss to Holly Holm, then losing to Amanda Nunes in her comeback fight late last year. However, one constant through Rousey's career was her pre-fight routine. While she explained training camps were absolute hell on her body, she had her way of coping with it. She explained that it's actually beneficial for women, despite the old adage that it weakens men's legs.
"I mean for girls it raises your testosterone, so I try to have as much sex as possible before a fight, actually. (Laughs) Not with like everybody. I don't put out Craigslist ads or anything, but you know, if I got a steady, I'm going to be like, “Yo. Fight time's coming up.”
10 Magic Johnson
Any basketball knows who Magic Johnson is. Johnson is the current president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers and a retired NBA player who played 13 seasons with the Lakers as a point guard. Unfortunately, his career ended due to an HIV-positive test on November 7, 1991. HIV is a retrovirus that infects the human immune system. Simply put, it's a less severe phase of AIDS.
Thanks to the proper treatment, Johnson has survived HIV for more than 20 years. But he hasn't been cured of HIV yet. He told ESPN, "This is one of those things you think can't happen to you, but it can...Sometimes you're a little naïve about it and think it can never happen to you. You think it can happen to only other people...Well, I'm here to say it can happen to anyone. Even me, Magic Johnson."
Johnson apparently suffered the consequences of his actions. In Jerry West's autobiography, West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life, West claimed that Magic admitted to sleeping with 300 to 500 people each year before his HIV diagnosis. West went on to say that the Lake Show's locker room in the '80s was every bit as debaucherous as anyone could imagine.
9 Ryan Lochte
Ryan Lochte may not be a man of his word as he had fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the 2016 Summer Olympics. But he may be correct in his belief that 70 to 75 percent of Olympic athletes would get it on at some point during their two weeks of competition. He told ESPN, "I'd say it's 70 percent to 75 percent of Olympians...Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do."
Lochte didn't hold back in his on and off shenanigans during the Olympics. In 2012, he told ESPN, "My last Olympics, I had a girlfriend — big mistake...Now I'm single, so London should be really good. I'm excited." Apparently, he was looking forward to competing in the 2012 Olympics in London, United Kingdom, and unleashed the power where it mattered the most.
Lochte is currently engaged to Kayla Rae Reid (former Playmate of the Month). The couple have a son named Caiden Zane Lochte. But his reportedly wild ways may not stop there.
8 Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods never revealed his habits before playing a round of golf, but with all the affairs he engaged in behind his ex-wife Elin's back, you have to figure that some had to be squeezed in before he was set to play in a major or any round of golf. Woods checked into a sex addict clinic after his scandal and with habits like his, it's pretty obvious that no time was a bad time for Tiger to do his thing. One of his former mistresses even went so far as to say Woods would skip sleep in order to keep the party going:
"He would engage in sex from 9 p.m. until the sun came up the next morning," mistress/call girl Loredana Jolie said. "He wasn't a healthy guy. He couldn't sleep and would stay up all night."
7 LaShawn Merritt
LaShawn Merritt is another big name in the world of track and field. His forte lies within the 400 metres. He's a former Olympic champion over the distance. His personal best of 43.65 seconds made him the sixth fastest runners of all-time.
Like Lochte, Merritt has also been humiliated by the news media. In 2009, Merritt walked into a 7-Eleven in Suffolk, Virginia, after spending the night in a nightclub. He purchased a box of condoms and a packet of four blue pills under the name of ExtenZe. The $6 purchase cost him millions of dollars. If he checked the back of the box he would’ve noticed 50 mg of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a notorious anabolic steroid, and 10 mg of pregnenolone, another steroid, in the blue pills. Both lurk in the World Anti-Doping Association’s list of banned substances.
Merritt obviously wasn't thinking about track. He was thinking about sex. Don't forget that he told ESPN in 2012, "An Olympics to remember has to have those stories...But I was too locked in in Beijing. This time, when I'm done leaving my legacy on the track...I'll make sure London remembers me."
6 The 2000 Israeli National Soccer Team
We're going a little further back for this one, but the story is too interesting not to tell. Back during the 2000 qualification round for the UEFA European Championship, the Israeli team had made it to the playoff round to take on Denmark. However the team was shellacked 8-0 on aggregate, including 5-0 on their home turf. The coaches grew suspicious as to why the team performed so poorly and it turned out that most of the team was hiring escorts prior to games. The Israeli FA launched an investigation and in the hotel room the team was staying at, they found used condoms in the trash cans. Yikes! Hopefully their performances in the hotel room was better than on the field.
5 Carl Pavano
Alyssa Milano spent most of her early in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, and later moved to the Great Kills neighborhood of nearby Staten Island following a shooting in the large, multi-ethnic area.
Before her second marriage to Creative Artists Agency agent David Bugliari in 2008, Milano dated quite a few men like The Lost Boys actor Corey Haim and actor Scott Wolf, and married singer Cinjun Tate. She was also an ex-girlfriend of New York Yankees' pitching bust Carl Pavano, who she reportedly hopped in bed with. When asked about the event, she reportedly told Hugging Harold Reynolds, "This was right after he won the World Series. So he was kind of baseball royalty. It was before he came to the Yankees...and became the Carl Pavano you know."
Now this is just speculation, but Milano is no stranger to baseball players on the diamond. It wouldn't be a surprise if she hopped on the Pavano bandwagon.
4 Wilt Chamberlain
Okay, Wilt Chamberlain holding a sign that says "100" was actually taken after Chamberlain scored 100 points as the then-Philadelphia Warriors defeated the New York Knickerbockers, 169-147, on March 2, 1962. So there's no way we can disrespect him as a potent NBA center.
But if you check out Chamberlain's autobiography, A View From Above, Chamberlain wrote that he had sex with 20,000 women since the age of 15. That's an average of 1.37 women a day for 40 years. This may sound ludicrous, but all of his alleged sexual encounters might actually be true—and even if he was off by a few thousand or more, he was still one of the most viewed athletes in the United States when it came to the sexual revolution. Clearly, he wasn't afraid to participate in the revolution.
We're pretty sure that Chamberlain was involved with some women before heading to the court to shoot some hoops.
3 Shawn Kemp
Regardless of age, any diehard NBA fan can tell you that Shawn Kemp (former power forward) is one of the biggest playboys in league history. Kemp had seven kids with six different women. We don't know the identities of those baby mamas, but we do know that his oldest son, Shawn Kemp Jr., played college football at the University of Washington, and his middle daughter, Destiny, attends Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.
We can't imagine those six baby mamas were the only ones that Kemp slept with during his NBA days. He's arguably one of the most notable scumbags in the league's history. Remember when he 'accidentally' slept with the same woman twice? He reportedly picked up Rhonda Mitchell from the club after a game. Mitchell was a groupie whom he hooked up with three years ago in Detroit, Michigan. We're pretty sure he did it before some of his games.
2 Dwight Howard
Dwight Howard is another playboy in NBA history. The only difference is that he's still in the league and Kemp isn't.
While the exact numbers remain a mystery, Howard reportedly fathered numerous kids with numerous women. That wasn't the same goal that he initially pledged after being selected by the Orlando Magic with the first overall pick in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft. He told Complex that "his platform as a professional player to 'raise the name of God within the league and throughout the world.'" So much for that!
Howard is apparently raising the number of women he has been sleeping with, not the name of God within the NBA. Royce Reed and Marey Carey are two of his alleged WAGs. That being said, he likely worked his magic in the bedroom. This might explain why his career has pretty inconsistent as of late.
1 Breaux Greer
You might remember Breaux Greer. Greer is a retired track and field athlete, who most notably competed in the javelin throw, and is an eight-time United States champion. He's also the current American record holder in the event with a throw of 299.5 feet, which was achieved on June 21, 2007. This was the best throw in the world for nearly eight years until Kenyan track and field athlete Julius Yego surpassed the record in 2015.
Greer hasn't shied away from his life in the bedroom. He once told ESPN that he had was with three women one day during the 2000 Olympics. While the names of the women have never been released, we're pretty sure that they were also athletes...and were beautiful inside and out. He didn't just have success on the field, he also had the same amount of success getting it on with the ladies outside of the competitions.
