“Keeping Up With the Kardashians” is a reality television show that airs on the E! Network. The series chronicles the lives of Kris Jenner and her daughters, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, and Kylie and Kendall Jenner. A sextet of glorified strumpets, these affluent opportunists are notorious for dating socialites, rappers, musicians and athletes. Somewhat curiously, after getting romantically involved with a Kardashian or Jenner, many athletes’ careers have plummeted.
“The Kardashian curse is every male figure that comes and dates a Kardashian and their life kind of just goes downhill after that,” Kylie Jenner said.
For suspicious reasons, excluding Kourtney, the Kardashian and Jenner girls have been widely ridiculed for primarily enjoying adult relations with African-Americans. In fact, even former New York Yankees fan favorite David Wells crudely mocked the Los Angeles-based clan during a January 2016 golf outing with hockey great Jeremy Roenick and another friend.
“Golfing with my boy Steve and Roenick,” Wells, 54, tweeted. “Jeremy has 2 holes he lipped out we call that the Kardashian putts. Nothing white goes in the hole.”
Kim Kardashian, a twice-divorced woman who spent private moments with sportsmen Kris Humphries, Miles Austin, Reggie Bush and Cristiano Ronaldo, exchanged vows with obnoxious rapper Kanye West in May 2014. West, an egomaniac who was hospitalized for a psychiatric emergency in November 2016, taunted Humphries, Austin and Bush after he married Kardashian.
"I want to dip that *** in gold, I want to dip that *** in gold,” sang West. “I made it over NBA, NFL players...So, every time I score, it’s like the Super Bowl.”
While West “dip(s) that *** in gold,” let’s review 15 athletes who suffered from “The Kardashian Curse.”
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was caught getting touchy with Khloé Kardashian at Drake’s Memorial Day party in May 2016. The 5-foot-11, 198-pound Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time second-team All-Pro, was eventually snapped with Kardashian sitting on his lap. Beckham dismissed the photograph and insisted he remained faithful to the lady he was seeing.
“Things go like that,” said Beckham, 24, “and then some other girl that I may have been talking to hears about it, and now it’s more drama, more commotion in my life. And I’m sitting here trying to explain my situation to somebody, and it’s really not even a situation.”
Beckham mainly rebounded from the Kardashian “drama” and had another stellar season on the gridiron in 2016. However, the flamboyant Louisianan was fined on two separate occasions last September and he was invisible a few months later in the Giants’ 38-13 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden is an absolutely brilliant performer on the hardwood. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Harden looked dimwitted when he began courting Khloé Kardashian in June 2015. Harden, a five-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA First Team selection, led the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals in May 2015. After clipping Kardashian in February 2016, Harden struggled defensively and Houston proved to be one of the association’s biggest disappointments.
“(Dating a Kardashian) wasn’t me,” said Harden, whose Rockets squad got swept by the Warriors in the first round in April 2016.
“I don’t need pictures of myself when I’m driving my car. Who cares? What shoes am I wearing? Who cares? Where am I eating? Who cares? It was unnecessary stuff that I think trickled down to my teammates. I had to eliminate that.”
Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the premier footballer in history. Ronaldo, Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer, is also an infamous womanizer. Ronaldo and Kim Kardashian were snapped in April 2010 smooching during dinner at a swanky restaurant in Madrid.
“She and Ronaldo were kissing and very affectionate,” said a source. “They looked to be getting on really well, laughing the whole time.”
Named Forbes’ highest-paid athlete in 2016 and 2017, the Real Madrid megastar wasn’t immune to “The Kardashian Curse.” Approximately eight months after his rendezvous with the queen of keysters, Ronaldo wasn’t named one of the world's two best players at the end of the 2010 campaign. To date, that year remains the only season that the 32-year-old Ronaldo failed to collect a trophy.
Khloé Kardashian may suffer from nymphomania. Outfielder Matt Kemp debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers in May 2006. Kemp prospered in La-la-land and made two All-Star squads and won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards in the 2009 and 2011 seasons. Against his better judgment, Kemp romped with Kardashian for a month from November 2012 until December 2012.
“He’s low-key and sticks to himself and is not all out there in the media,” a source close to the outfielder tells HollywoodLife.com. “He doesn’t care about all the extras that comes with being around one of the Kardashians. He’s a real humble and shy guy.”
Predictably, Kemp battled injuries throughout 2013, appeared in only 73 games, and finished with a career-low six home runs and 33 RBI.
Following a draft night trade, the Los Angeles Lakers acquired University of Missouri shooting guard Jordan Clarkson with the 46th pick in 2014. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Clarkson has personally excelled as a Laker and he made the 2015 NBA All-Rookie First Team. However, Los Angeles remains one of the association’s most inept organizations. More worrisome, Clarkson began getting cozy with Kendall Jenner in April 2016. The lovebirds split in the wintertime and Clarkson is now with actress Bella Thorne.
“Kendall thinks Jordan and Bella would be perfect for each other because neither one of them is interested in a serious relationship,” an insider told HollywoodLife.com.
“She isn’t surprised one bit to hear that they could be dating after pics surfaced of them together at Magic Mountain.”
Kendall is now seeing A$AP Rocky and Clarkson is on the cusp of having to endure the insufferable LaVar Ball.
Reggie Bush was still an electric running back at the University of Southern California when he began wooing Kim Kardashian in the early 2000s. The 6-foot, 205-pound Bush, who collected every noteworthy award as a Trojan in 2005, and Kardashian formally became an item in July 2007. The star-studded duo had a fickle relationship before they permanently severed ties in March 2010. Henceforth, Bush’s fortunes dramatically soured. Later that spring, because the playmaker committed major NCAA infractions, Bush was stripped of all the memorabilia, accolades and records from his tenure in Tinseltown. Shortly thereafter, on September 20, Bush sustained a broken leg. The 32-year-old Bush became a journeyman following the 2010 campaign and he is currently a free agent.
“I play football, and most football players are camera shy,” said Bush. “We just want to be left alone, we just want to stick to what we do.”
Wide receiver Miles Austin initially withstood “The Kardashian Curse.” However, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Austin was ultimately undone by the infamous hex. Austin, a two-time Pro Bowler who led the NFC in receiving yards as a Cowboy in 2009, started seeing Kim Kardashian in June 2010. Unsurprisingly, considering Mrs. West’s history with guys, the tandem called it quits a mere three months later in September.
“They were acting as if they were single or just having fun, but they never were – it was the real deal,” a source told People. “They were always strong, but before Kim left for Europe they decided it’s not fair that they don’t get to spend more time together and ended it.”
Austin, an undrafted free agent out of Monmouth University, never regained his dynamic form after the fling with Kardashian. Austin retired in December 2015 at the age of 30.
Power forward Tristan Thompson played an intricate role in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 championship campaign. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Thompson, the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft who secured a spot on the 2012 NBA All-Rookie Second Team, began dating Khloé Kardashian last autumn. Despite James Harden’s sage advice, Thompson and Kardashian remain a couple.
“Khloe was a good woman but she was also a curse,” a source close to James told HollywoodLife.com.
“She was a huge distraction to James. It’s was always lights, camera, action with her and being on social media like it was a real 9 to 5. James was so caught up in her world that his game took a back seat and his performance on the court wasn’t up to par.”
With Kardashian now supporting Cleveland, Thompson and the Cavaliers got lambasted by the Golden State Warriors in June.
Small forward Rick Fox is debatably one of the most accomplished role players in the annals of the NBA. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Fox, who also relished time with Hollywood stunners Vanessa Williams and Eliza Dushku, was a vital piece of the Los Angeles Lakers’ team that won three consecutive titles from 2000 through 2002. Shortly after splitting with the gorgeous Dushku, Fox and Khloé Kardashian were spotted dining together at Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks, California.
“It looked to be a fun date,” one observer told Us of the duo, who chose to sit at the bar together versus at a table. “She seemed happy.”
Distressingly, Fox and Kardashian parted ways a few weeks after their May 2015 outing. Per usual, Fox didn’t escape unscathed from Kardashian. In December 2015, Fox bought professional League of Legends team Gravity Gaming of the North American League of Legends Championship Series. Fox’s squad has been one of the league’s feeblest franchises since his purchase.
The Houston Rockets chose University of Florida small forward Chandler Parsons with the 38th pick in 2011. Something of an underdog, the 6-foot-10, 230-pound Parsons shined in Space City and made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2012. Inexplicably, although allegedly a ladies' man with countless admirers, Parsons strictly focused on Kendall Jenner. Accordingly, Parsons and Jenner appeared enamored with each other at STK LA in July 2014.
“They were heavily flirting, but no touching,” an onlooker tells PEOPLE.
“Chandler and Kendall were talking the whole time. His agent was chatting with Kylie and the other friend.”
Parsons has undergone two surgeries to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee since his night with Jenner. Furthermore, to add insult to operations, Jenner dumped Parsons and is completely uninterested in reconciling.
Atlanta Hawks power forward Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian enjoyed 72 days of wedded bliss in 2011. Sadly for the erstwhile Minnesota Golden Gopher, the 5-foot-3, 145-pound Kardashian quickly realized she didn’t love the 6-foot-9, 235-pound Humphries and filed for divorce.
"I just thought, 'Holy s--t, I'm 30 years old, I better get this together. I better get married," said Kardashian.
"I think a lot of girls do go through that where they freak out thinking they're getting old and have to figure it out, all their friends are having kids. It was more of that situation. But I knew, like, honeymoon it wasn't gonna work out."
Like with Austin, Humphries flourished from the outset sans Kardashian. Alas, Humphries’ 2011-2012 campaign was a mirage and he’s never averaged more than 8.4 points or 8 rebounds since getting axed by Kardashian.
The New York Jets drafted Ottawa University running back Derrick Ward with the 235th pick in 2004. Although unable to fly with the Jets, the 5-foot-11, 240-pound Ward remained in the swamps of Jersey and played five seasons as a Giant in East Rutherford. Ward was impressive with Big Blue and he signed a four-year contract worth $17 million with the Tampa Buccaneers as a free agent in March 2009. Unwisely, the California native began seeing Khloé Kardashian almost before the ink dried on his deal with the Bucs. Predictably, with Khloé in the equation, Ward’s burgeoning career sank as a Buccaneer. Ward and Kardashian split in July 2009. Regrettably, irreparable damage had already been done and the 36-year-old Ward retired as a Houston Texan in July 2012.
The Minnesota Timberwolves selected North Carolina Tar Heels shooting guard Rashad McCants with the 14th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound McCants struggled to get acclimated to the association's style of play and was hindered by a rash of injuries. To compound issues, McCants began seeing Khloé Kardashian in August 2008. The lovebirds spent roughly five months together before Kardashian dumped McCants in January 2008. Within a week of their breakup, McCants was traded to the Sacramento Kings. Sacramento declined to extend McCants’ contract in July 2009 and he was altogether out of the NBA at the age of 24.
“Without that situation (dating Kardashian) in play, I’m a $60-$70 million player,” McCants said. “Easily.”
The 32-year-old McCants is a free agent who hasn’t performed professionally since he was a member of the Cañeros del Este team in 2015.
Football standout and three-star recruit Julian Brooks and Kendall Jenner started dating in November 2012 while they were students at Sierra Canyon High School in California. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Brooks was an explosive wide receiver who received scholarship offers from Washington State, Utah State, UCLA, Oregon State, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State and the University of Nevada, Reno. Brooks, who split with Jenner in September 2013 after getting caught cheating on her, committed to the Wolf Pack.
“(Brooks) would disappear for days and not answer Kendall’s text messages,” said a source.
Interestingly, Brooks never played for the Wolf Pack or even stepped on another gridiron. Since vacating Reno in the spring of 2015, the lothario has reportedly focused his attention on a beanie line he established called “Brooks.”
Following an entire month’s worth of courtship, Lamar Odom and Khloé Kardashian exchanged vows in September 2009. Astoundingly, and heartbreakingly, the 6-foot-10, 230-pound Odom and 5-foot-9, 160-pound Kardashian divorced in December 2013. Subsequently, the 2011 NBA Sixth Man of the Year couldn’t find work and he never again competed in the association. Still wounded from the Kardashian debacle, Odom embarked on a near-fatal drugs and alcohol bender in October 2015 at a brothel in Crystal, Nevada. Odom was placed on life support for a few days before he regained consciousness.
“Being in that damn brothel and thinking I was going to just rest a little bit,” said Odom, 37.
“I wasn’t in a good place mentally before that incident happened. Me and my wife at the time were going through some things. I was in a dark place.”
