Female athletes are just like any other female out there. They're worked hard towards their goals, achieved their goals and got the opportunity to cash in on their success. The only difference is that they're athletic and spend a part of their life participating in sporting events instead of working a regular job like a journalist or an administrative assistant.
Like other public figures, female athletes are often expected to clean up nice and dress the part in order to be taken seriously off the arena, court, field, etc. But there are some females who don't seem to care about their outfits and appearances. We don't have anything against those who appear to possess the "I don't care" attitude, but hey, at least try to put some effort into your outfits for crying out loud! You don't have to dress like you're a model who's going to grace the cover of Vogue, but you should at least make an effort to avoid the homeless Britney Spears look the pop star displayed during her highly-publicized breakdown in the mid-2000s.
From current WNBA player Brittney Griner to former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, we're sure that you'll recognize at least some of these names. When push comes to shove, some female athletes literally act like they're one of the boys and just throw on whatever is in their closet, which isn't the average routine for a woman, especially a wealthy woman.
Without further ado, here are 15 female athletes who have no sense of fashion.
15 Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner is a openly lesbian WNBA player who currently plays for the Phoenix Mercury as a center. Griner was briefly married to fellow WNBA player, Glory Johnson, who announced she was pregnant with a set of twins just days after a domestic violence case with her then-fiancee.
Despite her orientation, Griner has reportedly gone on to date men, after saying she was done with women following her nasty split from Glory Johnson. As for her attire, her outfits tend to be mismatched. It's almost like she doesn't know how to dress for her body type. Now granted, she can dress however she feels comfortable, but it's not exactly turning any heads at awards ceremonies. She's been rumored to date NBA star Anthony Davis, so at least they'll get the attention for a star basketball couple.
14 Danica Patrick
Danica Patrick is a soon to be retired NASCAR and INDYCAR driver. Without a doubt, Patrick is one of the most recognizable female faces in the sports world. Due to the fact that she is a woman in a sport that's usually been dominated by men, she's garnered a lot of attention. It also doesn't hurt that she's also one of the most attractive athletes out there. However that doesn't mean she has a great fashion sense.
While she may have a pretty face and toned body, Patrick doesn't always dress the part. She has a tendency to mix and match basic pieces and this includes her dresses, shoes and accessories. Sorry, but you're a female athlete, not the Little Mermaid. Leave your aqua items and flowy dresses at home.
13 Kerri Walsh Jennings
Kerri Walsh Jennings is a beach volleyball player who has won three Olympic gold medals and an Olympic bronze medal. As of 2016, Walsh Jennings is the career leader in career victories and career (monetary) wins with 133 victories and $2,542,635 in career (monetary) wins.
Walsh Jennings is one of the best beach volleyball players, but her fashion sense? Meh. She has to find fitted clothes that suit her body type, and more importantly, remember that she's not a teenager anymore. The loose shirt, hoodie and leggings look isn't flattering for a woman in her late 30s. Having played beach volleyball, she never really had to worry about walking around in regular clothes, so maybe she's still learning.
12 Brynn Cameron
Brynn Cameron is a former college basketball player who played at the University of Southern California as a guard. Brynn's brother is former NFL tight end Jordan Cameron, who played for the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins.
Despite her love for basketball, Brynn is better known as the mother of Matt Leinart's child and Blake Griffin's children. She seems to have a thing for athletic genes. We don't blame her though.
We understand that Brynn is a mother of three, but she's still young and should step up her fashion game instead of dressing frumpy. Frumpy fashion isn't real fashion. It's not that hard to emphasize your best assets. That being said, we hope her split from Blake Griffin works out for the best.
11 Mia Hamm
Mia Hamm is a retired soccer player who has won two FIFA World Cups and two Olympic gold medals. Hamm also played for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team as a forward.
Hamm retired from soccer in May 2004. Nine years later, in 2013, she became the first woman to be inducted into the World Football Hall of Fame in Pachuca, Mexico.
There's no doubt that Hamm is an inspiration for young women, but she sure could be doing better in her choice of wardrobe. Being the fit athlete that she was, it's surprising she can't seem to find a dress that fits her better. There's gotta be some good sewers she can hire, aren't there? Maybe fashion just isn't a priority for her.
10 Venus Williams
Venus Williams is a tennis player who is currently ranked No. 5 in the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) singles rankings. Venus is also the older sister of fellow tennis player, Serena, who is currently ranked No. 22 in the WTA singles rankings.
Venus has teamed up with retail clothing chain, Steve & Barry's, to launch a fashion line called EleVen. According to EleVen's website, Venus said, "I love fashion and the idea that I am using my design education to actually create clothing and footwear that I will wear on and off the tennis court is a dream come true for me. The vision has been to create a collection that will allow women to enjoy an active lifestyle while remaining fashionable at the same time. I'm thrilled with everything we've created to launch EleVen."
If Venus loved fashion so much, she wouldn't have embarassed herself by wearing a white halter mini dress from that line. Don't get us wrong, it's a cute dress to go clubbing in, but it's so cookie-cutter and not something a 37-year-old should be wearing while out and about.
9 Glory Johnson
Now, let's take a look at Brittney Griner's ex-wife, Glory Johnson. Johnson is also a WNBA player who currently plays for the Dallas Wings as a forward.
It has been reported that the main reason why the former couple divorced was because Johnson was pregnant with twins through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). While Johnson definitely won, as she receives $8,000 a month from her ex-wife, she still doesn't dress accordingly. Like, in this photograph, she's wearing a short white dress with a black blazer and matching tights while holding a basketball for a WNBA photoshoot. It's hard to tell if she's going to a job interview or posing for a female sports league. Perhaps there was a stylist for this photoshoot and they're the ones we should blame.
8 Serena Williams
Serena Williams is the younger sister of Venus Williams, but it doesn't make a difference as she doesn't have a whole lot of fashion sense.
Serena is best known for her colorful and flamboyant outfits on the tennis court, but sometimes, she takes it too far. Take, for example, this picture. She's strolling on a bridge in a Katy Perry-inspired outfit of a blue green bikini top and a pair of ripped short shorts. Stick to what you know best, contemporary dresses and refined tops. Serena is the most dominant female tennis player the world has ever seen so perhaps this was just one of those moments where she just didn't care how she looked. We're sure she was turning heads, but not of fashion moguls.
7 Chris Evert
Christine "Chris" Evert (formerly Chris Evert Lloyd) is a former World No. 1 tennis player from Fort Laurderdale, Florida. Over the course of her professional career, she won 18 Grand Slam singles championships, 157 singles championships and 32 doubles titles.
Evert teamed up with Tail Activewear to launch a tennis and athletic apparel line. She also works as a tennis commentator at ESPN. But she doesn't know how to dress. Come on, you're 63 years old (in her early 50s at the time of this picture) and still wearing a rosy pink dress with hot pink trim. That's so amateur hour! Woman up, woman! The good news is she still looks really good for her age, but she definitely needs a new stylist.
6 Alex Morgan
Alex Morgan is a soccer player who has won one FIFA Women's World Cup and one gold medal with the U.S. National Team at the 2012 Olympics in London, United Kingdom.
Morgan may be a flawless lady in your eyes, but her outfits can be rather amusing like the ones in Katy Perry's wardrobe. You just don't mix animal prints with leather, flower print with silver and vice versa. She's a deserving candidate for a personal stylist who can help her coordinate her own outfits. Morgan won't be getting many complaints from men who would come across her, because she can pull anything off, but the fashion savvy ones certainly may have something to say to her. Fortunately for her, she can get away with a few poor choices.
5 Cheryl Miller
Cheryl Miller is a head coach for the Cal State LA women's basketball team and a former college basketball player at USC (University of Southern California) and sportscaster for TNT. Cheryl is the sister of NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller and former MLB catcher Darrell Miller.
There's no doubt that Cheryl is one of the best college basketball players in her era as she was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995 and inducted into the inaugural class in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. But for a woman who has achieved a large amount of success, she doesn't dress the part. Here, you can see that she's wearing a baggy shirt and sweatpants while coaching her team. We understand that she's coaching, but come on, not all coaches have to dress like Bill Belichick.
4 Raquel Pennington
Raquel Pennington is a UFC fighter who competes in the women's bantamweight division. Pennington previously competed in the IFC (Invicta Fighting Championships).
As you may already know, Pennington is openly lesbian and engaged to fellow UFC fighter, Tecia Torres, who competes in the women's strawweight division. It's obvious that Pennington has her own style, but she needs to realize that she can't dress like a badass tomboy and just throw on a semi-girly sports bra. She needs to learn how to mix and match her wardrobe essentials. Well anyway, that's just one opinion, but it definitely looks like a bizarre mixture. Fortunately, fashion is the last thing on MMA fighters' minds when they step into the octagon. But she can do better than that.
3 Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Jacqueline "Jackie" Joyner-Kersee is a retired track and field athlete who has won six Olympic gold medals (three gold, one silver and two bronze) at four different Olympic games (Seoul, South Korea; Barcelona, Spain; Los Angeles, California; Atlanta, Georgia).
Joyner-Kersee also overcame asthma and became involved in several philanthropic causes after retiring from track and field. While she decided to become a humanitarian, she doesn't dress like a stereotypical humanitarian with classic outfits with coordinated patterned pieces. Well, she can wear patterned pieces, but as you can see in this photo, her splattered cardigan makes her look like a school teacher, not a working professional. It also looks like an outfit that's stuck in the 80s or 90s, back when she was competing.
2 Aly Raisman
Don't get us wrong, Aly Raisman is a decorated Olympic gymnast who has won three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal. Raisman has achieved a lot in her life for a 23-year-old. Raisman also showed viewers that she's a brave young woman who recently testified at former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar's sentence hearing in Michigan.
Raisman may not be performing in her leotard anymore, but she showed her fans the fashionista side of her. Well, at least in her own mind. In 2016, she wore a comic book-inspired sleeveless top and mini skirt. It's nice that she showed off her abs, but she's not attending a comic book convention. There's no need to put comic book characters on display from head to toe.
1 Dara Torres
Dara Torres is a former swimmer who represented the U.S. National Team. Torres was best known for being the first swimmer to represent the U.S. in five different Olympic games (1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, 2008). Her 12 Olympic medals (four gold, four silver, four bronze) and three world records prove that she's a seasoned veteran.
After announcing her retirement, Torres worked at various television networks as a reporter and announcer. She also works as an author and veteran celebrity swimmer. She just needs to update her wardrobe. Just my opinion, but 50-year-old women shouldn't be wearing things like light yellow sweaters with a kiddy-like American flag in the middle. There are other ways to show your pride for your country. Especially for a TV appearance.
