Becoming a professional cheerleader for the NFL, NBA or whatever other professional sports organization is a lot harder than it looks and includes quite a few unusual rules or guidelines. An NFL cheerleader’s contract outright states the cheerleader must always look impeccable. Their finger nails must always be manicured, and their skin must be the perfect tint. If they show up to a game the wrong weight, wrong skin tint or the wrong hair style, they are booted from performing during that game. In addition, you actually have to ask the coach for permission to change any part of your physical appearance.
To top it all off, a professional cheerleader is typically prohibited, or at least “discouraged”, from fraternizing/creating any type of romantic relation with any member of the team she is cheering for, including players, management and coaches. But a cheerleader dating a football player is the perfect love story! The head cheerleader is supposed to date the football captain; that’s just how it’s supposed to be. When you’re playing and cheering in the big leagues though, something like that can get you booted off the team real quick.
There have been cases of NFL players throwing parties, cheerleaders attending and dangerous substances present. Cheer teams don’t want that sort of image for their squads, so new guidelines became enforced. However, sometimes you can’t stop love… or lust for that matter. Here are 15 smoking hot cheerleaders who got too “close” to athletes despite the strict guidelines.

15 Cherise Sandra
Los Angeles Rams cheerleader Cherise Sandra left her mark on Golden State Warriors baller, Klay Thompson, literally. Sandra posted pictures of herself with her name graffitied on the ground outside of Thompson’s house with the caption, “You & Me Baby.” Could this be the start of a fatal attraction?
Thompson resolutely denies any link to the cheerleader stating, he is NOT DATING the “graffiti chick,” and that she is a friend of a friend … a guest of a guest. Thompson’s reps claim the two’s first-time meeting was that very day. He was apparently cool with a few girls tagging his property, since it was going to be renovated soon. The incriminating picture has since been deleted, leading some to take this as another sign they were dating but tried to keep it a secret.
14 Sarah Jones
Former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader, Sarah Jones apparently didn’t get the no-fraternization memo when she cheered in the NFL. Jones was rumoured to have engaged with nearly half of the football team and contracted several illnesses during her escapades. She adamantly denied these claims, saying she definitely did not give illnesses to the entire football team. Jones took up a defamation case against the gossip site who published the news. However, Jones lost her case.
The cheerleader later found herself right in the centre of another troubling scandal. Jones allegedly became involved with one of her 17-year-old former students. Jones ultimately admitted to an abuse charge. Her reasoning for engaging in the illegal relationship was said to be to get her own reality show.
13 Royce Reed
This former NBA dancer is largely known for her reality show stardom on VH1’s Basketball Wives. However before she was on TV, Royce Reed danced for two NBA teams; the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic. When she danced for the Magic, she met the now very popular NBA star Dwight Howard.
Howard was drafted by the Orlando Magic in 2004 and played with them until 2012. Sometime around 2008, Howard and Reed had relations that led to Reed giving birth to Howard’s son. The pair definitely did not get along at all after that. Their relationship was called one of the nastiest celebrity feuds of all time. Howard and Reed have had several battles in court and have publicly slandered each other. The pair apparently made amends in 2016, but just a year later Reed was on social media blasting Howard, once again.
12 Kelsi Reich
Kelsi Reich cheered for the Dallas Cowboys for five years, starting when she was just 18-years-old in 2007. A couple of years after she started cheering professionally, she met professional football player David Nelson. Nelson was drafted to the Buffalo Bills in 2010. The pair were completely smitten, and things seemed to be going along smoothly. However, in 2011, the Bills were to play against the Cowboys in Dallas.
Reich was faced with quite a bit of an inconvenience. She was paid to cheer for the Cowboys, but her dear boyfriend was playing, too. Nelson promised he had a great surprise for her during the game. The wide receiver made an incredible touchdown and ran back 80 yards to give Reich a big hug and hand her the touchdown ball. She was ecstatic, but the onlookers wondered what the heck was going on! Luckily, it doesn’t seem Reich was punished.
11 Elizabeth Barry
Former Raiderette Elizabeth Barry married football player Alex Smith in 2009 while he was quarterback for the Oakland Raiders’ longtime enemy the San Francisco 49ers. The couple met while they were both in the Bay Area and were able to put aside their team’s rivalry. Since the marriage, Smith has transferred to the Kansas City Chiefs and the pair have two sons together.
Despite the Raider vs. 49er feud, Barry and Smith have ultimately had a very drama-free marriage and life together. Barry moved with Smith to Kansas City when he was transferred and helps Smith through the most troublesome times, including when his best friend, Andre Dabagghian took his own life. The pair have dedicated a lot of their free time to working with the Hope House, a Kansas City organization to prevent domestic abuse.
10 Brooke Sorenson
Brooke Sorenson is one of the most legendary Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. She married a not very well-known MLB player, Laynce Nix in 2011. She didn’t break any Cowboy’s guidelines by marrying a baseball player, but many tilted their heads at who she chose to marry. Nix made his big debut for major league baseball in 2003 after being drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2000. Nix now plays for the Philadelphia Phillies and his biggest accomplishment is probably marrying Sorenson.
Sorenson was a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader for five amazing years starting in 2006. After her retirement, she choreographed for the Miami Dolphins cheer team for a few years. Dancing and cheering is her passion in life, but she also hopes to one day become a sports broadcaster.
9 Camille Kostek
Camille Kostek was a cheerleader for the New England Patriots for a couple of years, leaving them in 2015. Shortly after her departure, rumours began floating around saying she and Patriots tight end and NFL’s “most famous bachelor,” Rob Gronkowski were dating. Just a few months before Kostek confirmed the rumours, accepting they’ve had a thing together, Gronk went to Twitter saying, “Some girls are crazy … I don’t got a girlfriend.” It seems the two had something going on, but Gronk moved on from all of it. Kostek may not have, though.
Kostek has posted questionable photos to Instagram wearing nothing but Gronkowski’s jersey. And she hasn’t denied claims the two were dating in the beginning of 2017. They may have rekindled their romance, but it still remains nothing official.
8 Krystle Campbell
Krystle Campbell was a great Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader for over six years when she met MLB player Ryan Howard in 2010. She soon started getting accused of rooting for the wrong team, even though Howard played in a different sport altogether. Campbell got caught missing several mandatory cheer practices to spend time with Howard. However, Campbell managed to escape punishment from her coach since she was not out partying; Howard suffered a major ankle injury and Campbell was helping him settle back at home. Eagles cheerleaders are only allowed to miss practices for serious reasons, like being sick.
Many speculated Campbell was skating on thin ice with her cheer team and faced being cut indefinitely. Campbell eventually parted ways with the Eagles and stood by her partner. The two were married in 2012 and now have two kids together.
7 Christy Oglevee
The Redskins own “Barbie and Ken,” that’s what Christy Oglevee and Washington Redskins Tight end Chris Cooley became known as when they started dating in 2005. However, you know the rules… cheerleaders can’t date football players on the team they cheer for. Oglevee was fired from the Redskins cheer team once news spread about her dating the football player. Oglevee lost her job, but gained a big shot football star with a huge contract. Cooley and Oglevee became married in 2008 and loved to share all the details about their lives together, even the most private ones.
It seemed like the perfect fairytale, but even fairytales have unhappy endings. The admired couple filed for divorce in 2012 for reasons unknown, because they finally decided to keep some things private.
6 Ann Lux
Ann Lux (former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader) and Will Middlebrooks (current Philadelphia Phillies third baseman) knew each other since they were just 12-years-old. Lux retired from cheerleading in 2012 to marry Middlebrooks and dedicate her life toward being a MLB wife. At the time, Middlebrooks played for the Boston Red Sox.
However, she may have quit for no reason because Lux and Middlebrooks split before ever getting married. The pair broke the news to the public by quietly unfollowing each other on Twitter and Lux was spotted without the engagement ring. Don’t worry about her though, she quickly rebounded with professional golfer Brent Long and the two now have a beautiful daughter together. Long no longer plays a professional sport; he is now a real estate agent in Tennessee.
5 Lindsay Slott
NFL cheerleaders dating MLB players seems to be a common thing. Former Houston Texans cheerleader, Lindsay Slott once gottogether with then Houston Astros player Hunter Pence. They seemed to be a wonderful couple, but once Pence got traded over to the Phillies, he broke up with Slott a few weeks later. I guess long distance relationships weren’t his thing.
Slott remained a loyal Astros fan, even after the sad break up. She let her emotions toward her ex-boyfriend really show all over Twitter during a Phillies vs. Astros baseball game. Slott live tweeted along with the game, suggesting she wished Pence would get hit with the ball straight in his manhood. She cheered on the Astros and wished they had beat the Phillies, but that wasn’t the case.
4 Emily Kuchar
Emily Kuchar is another former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader who married her MLB player/high school sweetheart. Kuchar and the current Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher, Zack Greinke met while going to Apopka High School in Florida together. Kuchar joined the Cowboys cheer squad when she was 18-years-old and stayed with them for two seasons. Being a cheerleader on one of the highest-honored NFL cheer teams got Kuchar many other opportunities. She was in a movie, a couple of television shows and became Miss Daytona Beach 2008.
Kuchar and Greinke were always close, even before they were married. It could be said that Greinke wouldn’t be the great pitcher he is now without her. Greinke was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and almost left baseball for good, but Kuchar kept him calm and helped him overcome his anxieties. The pair became married in 2009 and gave Kuchar gave birth to a little girl in 2015.
3 Kandi Mahan
Kandi Mahan is one of the most beautiful WAGs in golf. Before she was known for being a WAG, Mahan was a very popular Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader. Aside from cheering, she also spent some time as a Dallas Mavericks dancer. In 2009, Kandi met professional golfer Hunter Mahan and less than six months later, he popped the question. The two were married in 2011 and Kandi began cheering for a different sport, golf. She accompanied Hunter on his PGA tours and supported all his endeavours.
Kandi and Hunter share two children together, while Hunter continues playing golf. As for Kandi, she’s still noted for waving her pom poms around but now she’s the leader of the golf WAGs out there on the green supporting their men.
2 Laurie Schaub
Former Atlanta Falcons cheerleader Laurie Schaub (Laurie Flynn) is now married to Matt Schaub, a quarterback for the Falcons. The pair met at a charity event and Laurie had no idea he was a football player. At the time, Matt had only started in two games the entire first three seasons he played for the Falcons. Luckily, Laurie didn’t face any penalties for dating a Falcon footballer.
Matt was traded to the Houston Texans in 2007 and he and Laurie were married in 2008. Together they share three children and raise lots of money for sick children with their GR8 Hope Foundation. Laurie is also on the board for the Make-A-Wish foundation in Houston.
1 Kollette Klassen
Kollette Klassen began dating Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer when she was a cheerleader for the Broncos. In 2005, the pair were unfortunately surrounded by quite a bit of drama. Desperately trying to keep their relationship a secret, a gossip columnist spotted the two out together and did some digging on Klassen, discovering she was a Broncos cheerleader. Plummer worried Klassen would be harassed if people knew they were dating. After the column was published, a radio show declared Klassen a “jersey chaser.”
Plummer was very unhappy about the comments made toward his girlfriend and ended up controversially insulting Broncos’ fans. Plummer was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (but then retired) and married Klassen in 2007. Other rumours plagued the couple even after he left Denver, with some accusing her of getting pregnant to trap Plummer. They powered through all the drama and remain married to this day.
