You know the story; it’s a tale as old as time. Two people meet, they fall in love, they get married, have a family and live happily ever after. That’s typically the case. Unless of course, you’re marrying someone famous; then things start to get tricky. And if that person is Kim Kardashian, it can be quite the rollercoaster.
Kris Humphries never really stood a chance with reality TV star Kim Kardashian. The pair met in November 2010 when Kim was filming “Kourtney and Kim Take New York.” They started dating but didn’t go public until February 2011 during a Prince concert. Kris proposed to Kim just three months later, on May 18, 2011. Ninety-days-later, Kim and Kris were married on August 20, 2011.
The Kardashian-Humphries marriage is notorious for not lasting very long. Only 72 days after “I Do,” Kim filed for divorce claiming “irreconcilable differences,” on October 31, 2011. Due to the media uproar surrounding both the marriage and the divorce, many people doubted the validity of the relationship. In March 2012, a few months after filing for divorce, Kim K was rumoured to be dating rapper, Kanye West.
While a marriage should be taken more seriously, the Kim and Kris circus did provide quite a bit of entertainment to the world. Not to mention, the infamous “Kim Crying Face” meme originated during the falling out of her marriage with Kris. Here are 15 more things fans didn’t know about the rollercoaster known as Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ marriage.

15 Will You Marry Me
In true gentleman fashion, Kris asked Kim’s former stepfather, Catelyn Jenner, for permission to marry her. Humphries made the mistake, though, of letting Kris Jenner in on the plans. She immediately took full reins over all the plans and even began asking, “How are we going to ask Kim to marry us?!”
Humphries planned a special proposal at a fancy dinner in front of bothr families. But on the way to the restaurant, the couple got into an argument over their future living situations with Kim refusing to downgrade her life and Humphries fearing Kim would spend all his money. So, he postponed the proposal. Later, Humphries decided to propose to Kim in a more relaxed way, by spelling out the words “Will You Marry Me?” in rose petals with surrounding candles. Kim was surprised and explained she didn’t expect it to happen in her room.
14 Don't Go West
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were great friends leading up to the wedding, but Kris Humphries soon speculated there was more going on between the two. Kris Jenner was always referring to Kanye as a “close family friend,” but when Kanye wasn’t invited to the big wedding, Humphries knew there was something more going on. After the divorce, Humphries came out saying he knew Kim was cheating on him with Kanye after he wasn’t on the guest list.
The days leading up to the notorious wedding, Kim spent a lot of time on the phone talking with Kanye. Even the night before she said, “I do,” Kim and Kanye stayed up late talking to each other. Kim later admitted that though she moved forward with Humphries, Kanye was always there in the background.
13 Paging Kim K
Kanye West is said to have purchased his first cell phone for Kim Kardashian. After learning she was dating the professional basketball star, Kanye pumped up his game and desperately tried to convince Kim not to go forward with any wedding plans. Kanye admits he started sending Kim pictures of former professional athletes and what they look like years later. It was his attempt to show her that athletes don’t age well, and by marrying Kris Humphries, her future looked bleak.
As a “close family friend,” one could say that Kanye had Kim’s best interests at heart but seeing as the two formally announced they were dating a few months after Kim filed for divorce, his motives are questionable. Kanye blasted Humphries on more than one occasion since getting with Kim, and Humphries has threatened a tell-all on Kim K and her family.
12 Will You Marry Me (Take 2)
The proposal scene shown during the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” was a fake re-take of the real proposal. According to the show’s executive producers, Kim was very aware of the proposal and they ended up having to reshoot the original proposal because Kim K was not happy with her first reaction. So, Kris Humphries had to propose twice.
Another fake shot involving the relationship was the heart wrenching scene showing Kim telling her mom she had doubts over the coming marriage. That scene was actually filmed after the break up but staged to seem like it was before. These bogus scenarios only play into the conspiracies believing the whole marriage and possibly relationship between Humphries and Kim was all for ratings and publicity for the reality star.
11 Keeping Up With The Kardashians (And Kris Jenner)
The wedding episodes and the episodes leading up to the wedding are the most watched Keeping Up with the Kardashians episodes ever. "Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event,” aired on October 9 and 10, 2011. The four-hour, two-night event drew in over 4.4 million viewers the first night and 4 million the second night. Millions of people tuned in to watch what would happen during the extravagant, star-studded affair in Montecito, California, and they were not disappointed.
Those who joined the millions got to see Kim and her mother, Kris Jenner, question her relationship with Kris Humphries even before the wedding. They got to see Humphries and Kardashian quarrel on more than one occasion. And they got to see one of the most beautifully decorated and carried out wedding in entertainment history.
10 Not Cool Fam
After Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries moved in together, she claims she knew he definitely was not the one. While Kim was dating Kris, none of her famous family liked Kris. They all thought the two were not a good match. Kris was seen bossing Kim around and yelling at her, while Kim also showed signs of not really being happy with the situation. Kim’s little sister Khloe questioned Kris’ motives for wanting to marry Kim and she was taken off the guest list. Of course, she was eventually re-invited, but that’s pretty harsh.
The night before the wedding, Kim’s mom asked if she wanted out, because she wasn’t acting like herself. And during the actual wedding ceremony, Khloe was caught whispering to a guest, “I give it six months!”. More like two and a half months, Khloe.
9 Constant Arguing
It soon became very clear that Kim and Kris had a lot of problems deep within their relationships. Kim met Kris in New York while there for the KUWTK spin-off, “Kourtney and Kim Take New York, and Kris was playing for the New Jersey Nets. Off season, Kris liked to go back home to Minnesota and Kim eventually moved back to her California-based home. Before they got married, the two hadn’t even spent a single whole week together. And when they were together, they were seen bickering at each other.
This happened so much that leading up to their wedding, many people questioned whether they even liked each other, let alone loved each other. Kris was caught saying he couldn’t wait to scream at Kim after the wedding and Kim responded with the biggest fake smile and threatened him.
8 I Hate Him
The rift within Kim and Kris’ relationship became even more noticeable as the wedding grew closer. During the actual wedding rehearsal dinner, Kim was spotted telling her friends that she “hated” Kris and every little thing about him annoyed her. All of this before she even walked down the aisle. Yeah, sometimes married couples have their issues and can’t stand each other, but that’s usually at least a year away from the wedding. Her friends simply responded by laughing about the situation.
Kris Humphries spoke out after Kim filed for a divorce saying he was set on trying to work things out with his wife and that he truly loved her. Kim responded by posting to her blog that she got caught up in the whole fairytale dream and couldn’t get off the rollercoaster.
7 The Rings
Kim and Kris’ big wedding cost a whole lot of money. First, the ring Kris used to propose to Kim cost $2 million and was a 20-carat diamond ring. It was worth so much money that it was in a security truck from New York to L.A. Then, Kim had three different designer dresses made for her to wear during the ceremony. The total for all three came out to $60,000. And to go along with the over-the-top engagement ring, Kim also received her wedding band. The diamond-encrusted ring cost $200,000.
It’s not like the couple needed anything more, but they still signed up for a wedding registry that totalled over $170,000 worth of gifts. The LEAST expensive gift on the registry cost $1,115 and it was a clock.
6 Bling Bling
Her diamond engagement ring, and her diamond wedding band were not enough for Kim’s wedding look. She was also draped in an additional $40,000 worth of diamonds! Kris had original pieces made just for Kim with dangling diamond letter “K”s.
The glitz and the glam didn’t end there, either. Kim and Kris had an eight-foot tall, 600-pound wedding cake displayed for their 400 guests. E! Network and KUWTK’s crew set up their own special master room full of monitors so they could closely watch the ceremony from nine cameras and ensure not one moment was missed. Including Kim admitting that she married Kris because she felt like she was getting old. Kim K is quoted as saying, “I’m 30-years-old, I better get this together. I better get married.”
5 Publicity Stunt
Was the marriage something real for Kim Kardashian, or was it all a publicity stunt? Kris Humphries wholeheartedly believes Kim did it all for publicity and better ratings for the Kardashian’s reality show. Well, the show’s ratings did have a better outcome than the actual marriage. Everyone wanted to know how much Kim made from the wedding. Her mom claimed Kim didn’t make any profit at all and all the money earned went toward paying all the wedding’s expenses.
However, it was later revealed that Kim made a whole lot of money from her wedding with Humphries. She earned $175,000 from People magazine for the engagement announcement, and then $1.1 million for the first wedding pictures. She received $90,000 for having her bachelorette party at Las Vegas’ Tao. And to top it all off, she made $1 million for airing the wedding on E! Network.
4 All A Fraud
After Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries, he was taken aback, confused and upset. He made public comments saying he loved his wife and was “devastated to learn she filed for divorce.” He stated he was fully committed and willing to do whatever it takes to fix it. Kim went even farther with her statements to the public claiming she knew on the honeymoon the marriage was over. After Kris finally realized what was actually happening, he went out for an annulment of the wedding rather than a divorce.
An annulled marriage is different in a divorce in that it is considered invalid from the start, like it never even began. Kris claimed the whole marriage was a fraud and that Kim just used him and the marriage for her show’s ratings.
3 The Divorce Lasted Longer Than The Marriage
Kim and Kris’ marriage only lasted 72 days, but the divorce lasted an entire two years! Kim’s lawyers believed Kris was deliberately stalling the divorce and being very uncooperative. However, Kris’ lawyers felt it was Kim who was being the troublesome one in the case. The divorce was supposed to be quick and easy because they had both signed a prenup prior to marrying.
After a year of still being married and waiting for the final divorce, Kim’s lawyer Laura Wasser described Kim as being “handcuffed to Mr. Humphries.” During the divorce, Kim began dating her current husband, Kanye West. And right in the middle of all the stress and drama, Kim became pregnant with her daughter North. Kim’s lawyers needed the case to speed up, but Kris’ team continued to drag out the proceedings since he had nothing to do with the pregnancy.
2 Going Once, Going Twice
What happens to the big expensive rings after famous couples split up? Do they sell them and split the price? Does the person who purchased them get to keep them and do whatever they want? Kim’s mom, Kris Jenner, claimed that Kim “absolutely” did not give the engagement ring back. However, just six months after the divorce was finally completed, Kris Humphries took that big engagement ring to auction and sold it off for $750,000. Considering it was rumoured to have cost nearly $2 million, he lost not only his wife but a chunk of money as well.
After Kim filed for divorce, fans at his basketball games started booing him for quite a few games. Since his basketball career was on the decline, just like his love life, Humphries was in no position to just throw money away.
1 North... Humphries?
If Kim gave birth to her daughter North while still married to Kris Humphries, Kris would have been presumed the legal father to the infant. There would have been no way for Kanye West to issue a voluntary declaration of paternity. Kim absolutely did not want to be married to Kris when she gave birth to her first daughter, and I’m sure Kanye wouldn’t have been too fond of the idea, either.
Kim was just two months away from giving birth before the divorce was at last finalized. Kris’ team of lawyers pressed on the fact that Kim used the pregnancy to speed up the trial, because why would she plan to have a baby during such an event. Whether she planned North’s timeline or not, she just didn’t want to be married to Kris Humphries any longer.
