Katarina Witt was the beautiful face of socialism and represented East Germany throughout the 80’s and early 90’s right up until the Berlin was fell with the collapse of the soviet empire. Witt was one of the best figure skaters in the world but was subjected to all the fun stuff that went along with living in an intrusive communist state that was fearful that it’s mightiest athletes might jump ship and defect to the West. The East German secret police, the Stasi, kept a close eye on Katarina, and eventually Witt got her hands on the 3000-page file kept on her by the secret police. While discussing the file she confessed that the Stasi had even listened in on her being intimate. “The files were as intimate as diaries, but also full of made up stories about me.”
4 Stella Walsh: Gender Unknown
In today’s landscape of fluid gender politics the story of Stella Walsh is topical and intriguing. Walsh was a track athlete from Poland who competed in the 100M, 200M, and long jumping events in 2 Olympic games, winning a Gold and Silver medal. The intrigue comes after her death during an armed robbery in 1980. Stella’s autopsy showed that although she lived life as a woman and was socially, and culturally female that her genetics were closer to that of a man with underdeveloped genitalia. Now while not really a verbal confession it is a very interesting case of post-mortem revelation and the legacy of Walsh has had an affect on the IOC as it gradually dropped gender determination tests on Caster Semenya in 2009 and allowed her to compete as a woman.
3 Amanda Beard: Cutting
Amanda Beard is a champion, in and out of the pool. The American swimmer has 7 Olympic medals to her name and had a long and impactful career. Amanda was also noticed for her athletic and beautiful body outside of the pool and was named the world's most attractive athlete on the cover of playboy magazine. But sometimes all the accolades in the world are not enough to deal with inner turmoil. Amanda confessed in her book In The Water They Can’t See You Cry that she battled depression and a self-harm disorder. “Even though I was in a swimsuit all the time, no one saw because I found ways to make the cuts so teeny-tiny small, you could hardly see them.” Amanda is an inspiration and her book is revealing and honest.

Oh, and did we mention that Martina was the first ever professional athlete to come out as gay, ever. in 1981 after already winning 3 majors Navratilova confessed to the world that she was a lesbian. She later went on to admit that coming out made her a better athlete, winning another 15 Majors. I guess you just play better when you allow yourself to be who you are. Martina Navratilova is a legend and a trailblazer who is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

Michelle Jenneke is an absolutely stunning athlete who competes in the hurdlers. She took the world by storm when a video of her doing an attractive little warm up jiggle at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona during the 2012 season went viral and broke the internet. It drew the world’s attention to the attractive Australian but she confessed that it was not the desired affect of the warm up. “People think that by doing my dance I'm trying to draw attention to myself.
