The life of a pro athlete is tough. It may look glamorous to us outsiders looking in. We witness their triumphs, see the celebrations, see them tasting success. They’re living the high life to the fullest. But what we don’t really get to see, is the weeks, months and years of preparation that go into being a successful sportsperson. There’s the dieting, there’s the grueling workouts and training regimes, and then hopefully, the taste of sweet, sweet success at the end of it. But it’s not a walk in the park, being a superstar athlete isn’t for the faint hearted.

That’s why, after spending years and years adhering to such grueling schedules, when athletes eventually step away from their sports and call it quits, many just slob out, ease off the gas and take it easy – seriously take it easy. Exercise no longer features in their day to day lives, their diets go to pot, and they lead largely sedentary lifestyles. They feel they’ve earned it, and you can’t really argue with them. But for others, stepping away from that lifestyle they led for so long is just too much. They might ease up on certain things such as training, be more relaxed about dieting, but they still do something.

It’d be too alien for some athletes to have to go through a complete change. Therefore, even after retiring, some athletes are still in great shape. These are 8 retired athletes who definitely still workout and are in great shape, and 7 that aren’t.

15 15. FOLLOWING: JESSICA ENNIS-HILL

Jessica Ennis-Hill was rated as being one of the hottest Olympians of all time. She was in amazing physical shape during her days as a heptathlete – who can forget that six pack! - and was beautiful too – she possessed the ultimate combination. Oh, and you can add being hugely successful to that list too. Jess enjoyed quite a career. She’s still involved in athletics, but has swapped the track for the comfy chairs in the media room as a pundit and analyst. She’s also still raking in the cash because she’s associated with different companies, and is regularly taking part in modeling shoots and appearing on TV. We therefore know that Jess is still in tremendous shape, certainly still trains. She’s also popped out a couple of kids, which makes her look, the physique she’s managed to maintain, all the more amazing.

14 14. Isn't: LAMAR ODOM

Lamar Odom is probably one of the most recognizable names on this list.  But a whole lot more people know him because of his association with the Kardashians and his exploits in reality TV. He therefore probably has one of the biggest fanbases. This meant that a whole lot of people must have been distraught when things didn’t work out between himself and Khloe, and then when he went down the path of self-destruction. Everything that’s happened in recent years has certainly taken its toll. He was struggling to stay alive, so working out and staying in shape probably wasn’t at the top of his to-do list. Lamar’s also got a penchant for candy. He’s got the Candyman nickname for a reason, and after beating death, and having to deal with his separation from Khloe, he probably took to comfort eating too, and the outcome is evident for all to see.

13 13. FOLLOWING: FLOYD MAYWEATHER

Floyd Mayweather has an image to uphold. Although he’s retired from boxing, he’s still got a tremendous fan following. As one of the greatest fighters of all time, people aren’t going to stop following him just because he’s shelved the gloves. Actually, having said that, it doesn’t appear that he has shelved the gloves anyways. Boxers are famed for going through grueling training regimes in the leadup to fights. You’d have thought that Floyd, after all those years in the ring, after punishing his body time and time again, and after stepping away unbeaten, would be taking it easy. But he’s definitely doing some sort of training, whether it’s boxing training to stay sharp or just general fitness work, he’s most certainly spending time in the gym.

12 12. Isn't: DIEGO MARADONA

Diego Maradona is regarded to be one of the greatest players to have ever stepped foot on the soccer field. His individual achievements in the game are just ridiculous and he was just mesmerizing to watch. If he was around in today’s day and age, he’d without doubt be the highest-paid player on the planet. That’s something that probably eats away at Diego. He could certainly use the money. That’s because he’s had a seriously tough time of it after stepping away from life as a pro soccer player. He was a drug and alcohol addict, had financial problems and numerous health issues, a lot of which arose due to his ballooning weight. He got so big, that he had gastric bypass surgery. He subsequently lost a lot of weight, but that was mainly due to him living on a liquid diet. He’s still big, and we can assume that he doesn’t fit time for working out into his schedule.

11 11. FOLLOWING: ANA IVANOVIC

The tennis world including fans of the game were distraught when Ana Ivanovic announced she’d decided to call it quits. She retired because of her yoyoing form, her inability to perform at the level she wanted to. But let’s be honest, Ana didn’t achieve fame and fortune because of her prowess as a tennis player. She was loved by one and all because she was the hottest player on tour. Ana looked amazing on the court, and off it she was one of the wealthiest sportswomen around due to the sponsors she acquired and modeling shoots she did. When it comes to such shoots, she hasn’t stopped doing them.

She’s still only 30, has over a million Instagram followers, and loves getting in front of the camera to give them all a treat. To do this she has to look amazing, has to stay in shape. She watches her diet and exercises regularly, and because of that, she looks as gorgeous as she did when out on court.

10 10. Isn't: MIKE TYSON

I mentioned that boxers often go through intense training regimes in preparation for fights. So, when they step away from the ring, it can go one of two ways. That routine, disciplined approach to living life, could still be followed. Or a fighter could go the other way and totally slob out, revel in being able to do absolutely nothing and not having to punish the body. Mike Tyson did punish his body after retiring, but it wasn’t because of a hardcore training regime. He’s a heavyweight, and heavyweights are notorious for being rather unsightly physique wise. Mike was a physical specimen in the ring, but that was because he had to be. Outside though, he slobbed out, and this resulted in him being in seriously bad shape.

9 9. FOLLOWING: REGGIE BUSH

Reggie Bush announced his retirement from the NFL last year after what was a stellar professional career. He was a guy who shied away from the limelight, didn’t really have that superstar persona, and was uncomfortable with all of the attention. That’s part of the reason why he broke up with Kim Kardashian all those years ago. Reggie just went about his career professionally, and just got on with the job at hand. Now that he’s stepped away from the sport, it appears that he still takes a regimented approach to things such as his training. Sure, he’s only been retired for a matter of months, but even so, he’s still a physical specimen, is in awesome physical shape and certainly hasn’t been a stranger in the gym.

8 8. Isn't: PRINCE NASEEM HAMED

Here’s another boxer to grace this list, although Prince Naseem probably wouldn’t be happy about it. But he only has himself to blame. The British boxer was one of the most entertaining fighters to have ever stepped foot in the ring. He fought for a decade in the 90s, retiring in the early 2000s after winning tons of titles as a featherweight. His antics will live on in the memory. The guy just lived to entertain, to wow audiences. But once he retired, he missed the action, dealt with a range of other issues, and things began to go downhill. He was in trouble with the law, had financial issues, and gained a ton of weight. It was actually pretty remarkable to see the weight gain because fans of the Prince were used to seeing him all slim and trim as a featherweight. Once he retired he ballooned up to a size resembling a super-heavyweight. For his fans, it wasn’t pleasant to see.

7 7. FOLLOWING: GABRIELLE REECE

Think of stunning athletes, female athletes with gorgeous bodies, and the mind’s instantly drawn to the sport of volleyball. Gabrielle was certainly one of these athletes. Many seeing her today would think that she still is one of these athletes. Despite stepping away from the sport quite a while ago now, and despite keeping busy with writing books, making media appearances, acting and modeling, Gabrielle still finds time to train like an athlete. She’s about to hit the 50 mark, but her body’s as fit as any woman half her age. Look at her Instagram profile, and you’ll instantly be able to tell that she’s a model whose life is all about fitness. Whatever workout plan she’s following is certainly working, having the desired effect.

6 6. Isn't: TONYA HARDING

Tonya Harding’s been in the news a lot recently. The disgraced former figure skating champ vanished from the limelight for a period following the guilty verdict she received after she orchestrated an attack on one of her fellow Olympic athletes. She then gained a lot of weight, quite a ridiculous amount of weight. She tried her hand at boxing, and it looked like a different person in the ring to when she was a skater. When she stopped boxing, she continued to balloon in weight. She’s been in the news a lot recently because a biographical film about her, I, Tonya. has just been released. The film stars the beautiful Margot Robbie as Tonya and has once again brought Harding's past controversies to the spotlight.

5 5. FOLLOWING: MIESHA TATE

Former MMA fighter and UFC Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate, was regarded to be one of the hottest athletes in the world of professional fighting. Although it might be hard to believe, MMA consists of many sultry female athletes. Miesha was at the top of that list and fans were sad to see her go at the end of 2016. She created a legacy and is still involved in the sport as a pundit. Her punditry means we get to see a whole lot of her, and we get to see plenty on her social media channels as well. We can therefore say for certain, that Miesha follows a workout plan. She’s still on TV, still in the media in front of the cameras, and evidently wants to look as good a possible, keep her physique trim and ripped, which she certainly has done.

4 4. Isn't: MAGIC JOHNSON

In terms of his legacy in the sport, Magic Johnson is rated as being the greatest point guard of all time in the NBA. Johnson had different stages of his career. He retired in the early 90s after contracting HIV, came out of retirement for one game, then retired again and spent four years out of the game. But he kept himself in shape and returned yet again at 36 to play for the Lakers. He made a conscious effort to stay in shape and stay healthy, due to his other health concerns. After his third retirement, the slim, lean athlete began to ease back on his training. He entered his 40s, then 50s, had numerous business interests and plenty of things keeping him busy, and his training just went to the wayside.

3 3. FOLLOWING: MICHAEL PHELPS

Michael Phelps, for those of you not in the know, is the most successful Olympian of all time. At pretty much every Olympics, you could guarantee that Phelps would rock up to the pool and leave with a stack load of medals. He was one awesome swimmer, an amazing athlete. Swimmers tend to have amazing physiques. Phelps was no exception and looked like an Adonis in the pool. Details of his training regime and diet have become legendary. The hours he trains, the amount of calories he consumes – just the thought of it is enough to induce a heart attack! With nothing left to achieve, in 2016 Phelps announced his second retirement. But he’s still very much in the limelight, due to all of his achievements. We therefore know that he still works out. He doesn’t workout and eat like he did as a competitor – he’d be crazy to punish his body like that if he didn’t need to – but he still swims, still does plenty of gym work, and still has an awesome physical presence about him.

2 2. Isn't: CHARLES BARKLEY

Former American basketball pro, Charles Barkley, created a legacy in the NBA. at his best, he was an unstoppable force, but his career’s been marred by addictions, his extra-curricular activities. I’m on about his compulsive gambling. Charles just can’t say no to having a flutter, and has had to deal with some massive losses. He’s been discovered to have been getting with prostitutes, and loves his alcohol, so much so that people have said he’s got a problem. He’s got an addictive personality, an outrageous personality, one that keeps getting him into trouble. With him getting up to such antics, working out was inevitably going to take a back seat. Consequently, he’s gained a lot of weight, has continued piling on even more pounds and getting ever bigger.

1 1. FOLLOWING: MICHAEL JORDAN

Michael Jordan is 55 years old now and has relaunched himself, after his playing days were up, into a business mogul. He has his hands in many different pies so to speak, is known for his product endorsements, was one of the world’s best and most-loved players during his playing days and has basically continued raking in the cash. The business-savvy individual is worth a staggering $1.65 billion because of it. Due to his endorsements and various business interests, MJ spends a lot of time in front of the cameras. He therefore makes an effort to stay lean and trim, keep himself looking good. It’s certainly paid off. If he was called upon to get back on the court, he’d be able to hang with the best of them.
