Okay, so how many times does something like this have to happen before athletes will learn not to celebrate before the finish line/end zone/etc? I guess the answer is at least one more time because Tanguy Pepiot of the University of Oregon hadn't learned that lesson yet. But he definitely has now.
It was the last 100 meters of the grueling steeplechase race and Tanguy was in the lead and obviously very confident in his pending victory - so he started playing to the crowd. What he didn't realize, until it was too late, was that Washington's Meron Simon wasn't playing to the crowd, but was instead just running hard.... and yup, Simon was able to pass Pepiot right at the finish line.
Just look at Pepiot's face when he looks up at the stadium video screen and sees Simon about to pass him at the line. Ouch!!
