Shawn Spears has been officially announced as part of AEW's Double or Nothing PPV this Sunday, leaving WWE for the new startup promotion.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Shawn Spears — known to WWE fans as The Perfect 10 Tye Dillinger — is coming to AEW. That he was announced a bit before the show is a tad surprising as he would have made for a nice addition to the program and because he's taking part in the free portion of the show (the Casino Battle Royale), was a mild shock. Really, that's just being critical.
This is a great day for AEW fans, Spears himself and, likely, for Cody Rhodes who is great friends with the former WWE star.
Spears was long-rumored to be making his way to AEW. But, his non-compete ending just hours before Double or Nothing is scheduled to take place made saying anything tricky. It is not clear if he’s going to sign a contract to stay with the promotion, but Spears did say, “AEW is history-making. When the chance presented itself to be a part of something so groundbreaking, I wasn’t going to wait around any longer.”
He's also rumored to be starting a wrestling school with Tyler Breeze and plans to be a minor-league feeder for future AEW talent.
What This Means
While speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Spears said he believes in the company AEW and the people behind it. AEW recently referred to themselves as a brand for "lapsed wrestling fans" who want an alternative. For Spears, he can offer that.
“I believe in providing an alternative for fans, and I really believe that the audience has wanted an alternative for quite some time. This is now the platform to give people exactly what they want, and I am really looking forward to proving myself in AEW.”
