Success clearly doesn't always lead to positivity. In the world of sports, you might expect that a successful athlete with tons of fans would be a little cocky. However, you would still think that athletes would be appreciative of those who support him. Most of the time, this is the case. Unfortunately there are a few athletes who are known for being less than gracious. Most of these players are highly respected and treat their fans with much less respect. These athletes must not realize what an honor it is to meet them. Fans truly love meeting their favorite athlete and it can be an amazing moment for some people, but the worst feeling for a fan is when the athlete is a cold person and doesn't acknowledge you at all.

We have to remember that these athletes are people too. They have lives outside of sports and if something bad in our lives were happening I guarantee you wouldn't want hundreds of people coming up to talk to you every day asking for autographs or a picture. It can be hard with all the attention you receive as an athlete.

Not only do they receive positive attention, but they have to also deal with all the negative attention and criticism. People at games yelling horrible things from the sidelines can get to you eventually, but most athletes have prepared for this and have learned to ignore it. Its hard to be respectful with all of the criticism and negative judgement towards them, but they knew that there would be a ton of hate coming into this line of work. Therefore some of them need to learn how to stay positive.

Here are the top 15 athletes who let their fans down in real life.

15 15. Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds always kind of came across as a jerk, but fans can sometimes forgive a player for being short with the media. While the media is somewhat of a middle man between fans and players, fans will mostly care about a player's performance or how the player directly addresses fans.

His steroid scandal obviously was one way in which he let down his fans, but Bonds has long been rude to his own fans as well.

Dodgers outfielder Joc Peterson recalled an unpleasant experience with Bonds, telling Fox Sports: “I went up to him and said, ‘Hey, man, you’re my favorite player, can we get a picture.’ He kind of just turned his back on me and looked, and, I don’t know, he big-leagued me. … I was flustered, I don’t know how I played that day cause I was a mental headcase.”

Imagine how crushing that must have been.

14 14. Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona is undoubtedly one of the greatest soccer players of all time and was certainly the best of his era. It's because of him that Argentina has two World Cups and for this reason, he made fans around the world. However his life has also been filled with much controversy and that came to a forefront at the 1994 World Cup. Maradona was clearly on something and failed a random drug test during the tournament.

Other controversies included running a cameraman over with his car and getting very violent with the media which stemmed from his substance abuse problems. Maradona still has many fans for what he did during his career, but he hasn't done much to stay in good graces following his playing career.

13 13. Cam Newton

When you have as much success as Cam Newton, you need to take everything you hear about him with a grain of salt. However, this story about Newton is just ridiculous. He once went to a mall, where he sat and signed autographs. Little did his fans know, that they would have to pay $125 per autograph. I think Cam Newton has enough money, as he is just a jerk for making people pay.

Another incident in which Newton let his fans down was following this year's Super Bowl loss to the Denver Broncos. Even in defeat, Newton could have validated his fans by acting with some class following the loss, but barely said anything in his press conference and came off as a sore loser. There's no doubt his fans were disappointed as there was no way in defending a guy they'd supported all season.

12 12. Marcus Smart

During Marcus' time with Oklahoma State University, Smart got into an altercation with a fan, that just didn't look good for Smart or his university. During an extremely close game against Texas Tech, Smart hustled out of bounds going for a block, and was seen arguing intensely with a fan. After shoving the fan in the face, Smart was ejected, as he could not control his anger.

Smart would be suspended for three games following the incident. He would apologize for his actions. "I take full responsibility," Smart said following the incident. "This is not me. I really do apologize for it. Like I said, I take full responsibility and the consequences that come with it."

Smart has since matured since his college days. Since coming into the NBA with the Boston Celtics, there have been no incidents of Smart mistreating fans along the sidelines.

11 11. Joey Barton

Joey Barton, the British football player, spent six months in jail after punching a man over 20 times and assaulting a teenager in a McDonald's parking lot. He also got mad in a cab and ripped his radio out for refusing to pull into McDonald's. Barton also beat up one of his teammates so badly that he was out for an entire season. A few years ago on Twitter, Barton had a brutal exchange on Twitter with former teammate Dietmar Hamann. Following the incident Barton apologized saying, “I went beyond the boundaries of banter, opinion and common sense. I accept that my comments were offensive, untrue and related to matters of a personal nature, of which I had no knowledge."

Barton probably doesn't have many fans left, as he's constantly committed despicable actions on and off the pitch. You'd have to wonder why anybody would keep supporting him.

10 10. Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius was an inspiration for all of us, until he was accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend of three months. He ruined everything going for his image and his career. He was signing million dollar deals with huge companies and everything was ruined when he killed his girlfriend. Pistorius was eventually found guilty with culpable homicide, but was given just a five-year sentence in jail. Here is what he said in court to the victim Reeva Steenkamp's parents:

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Mrs and Mr Steenkamp, to Reeva's family, to those of you who knew her who are here today… there hasn't been a moment since this tragedy happened that I haven't thought about your family."

The charges have since been changed to murder and Pistorius is awaiting his new sentencing in July of this year.

Whateevr the sentence is, his career as a beloved athlete is essentially over, as his actions have let everybody down.

9 9. Aaron Hernandez

Hernandez was an easy pick because being charged with first degree murder along with five gun-related charges will always make you a jerk. Hernandez was one of the best tight ends in the league and threw it all away by shooting multiple people. The Patriots released Hernandez when he was arrested in connection to the murder of Odin Lloyd. Patriots owner Robert Kraft expressed a lot of regret in where things had gone with Hernandez, saying he and the organization felt "duped".

Hernandez showed absolutely no remorse for his actions at his trial as he was often seen with a smug smile on his face. Hernandez threw away millions of dollars, as well as his football career and any good will that he had built with the New England area.

I would say he is more than a jerk and he should be locked up for good.

8 8. War Machine

War Machine is an MMA fighter who is more than a jerk. This man is a horrible person and should be locked up forever. After getting out of jail from an assault charge, he seemed to be doing better and started dating Christy Mack. On August 8th 2014, War Machine assaulted Christy Mack at her house in Las Vegas. Mack had 18 broken bones, missing teeth, a fractured rib, and a ruptured liver. His name is a really good description of his personality.

War Machine actually tried to commit suicide in his jail cell by hanging himself and actually included Mack in his suicide letter, saying he regretted what he did, but also laid some blame on Mack for being with another man when War Machine found her. War Machine essentially threw his life away when he decided to lay his hands on Mack and her male friend.

7 7. Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather is known for being extremely cocky. He has also been to jail for charges of battery between him and his ex girlfriend. Mayweather is known for being reckless with his money and spending hundreds of thousands at strip clubs. He has screamed at interviewers because he didn't like the questions they were asking. Floyd is a person I would not like to hang around and seems like a huge jerk.

Mayweather couldn't seem to care less on whether you're a fan of his, or if you're a detractor of his. All he's worried about is flaunting his money around and ensure he's always driving a luxury car, has more money coming in and has his $1,000 meals from his chef. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the money you've earned, but Mayweather sure never carries himself with much class. If you're a fan of his, it must only be for his boxing skills.

6 6. Tiger Woods

At the peak of his career, Tiger Woods seemed to have anything you could ever dream of. Woods was the best golfer in the world, but for some reason he threw it all away when he decided to cheat on his wife. Your wife is definitely one of your biggest fans and he ruined his relationship with her and he ruined his career. Many fans of his were also left disappointed in his actions. While the scandal was completely overblown by the media, Tiger's morals were called into question and had many people wondering if he was worth supporting.

Everything after that went downhill for Woods. He has yet to really bounce back in his golfing career, failing to win a major since the scandal. There are many golf fans ready to re-embrace Tiger Woods, but his career remains up in the air. You wonder how things could have gone differently if he had remained faithful.

5 5. Johnny Manziel

Johnny Manziel has been known for having a lack of judgement regarding his Twitter account and pretty much his day-to-day life. But at a PGA tournament, he really proved he has a lack of judgement by throwing a water bottle at a fan. The fan was apparently harassing Johnny Manziel but as a professional athlete, one thing you have to learn is how to control your temper. Its hard to control yourself if someone is harassing you but that will always come with fame.

Manziel's career has gone up in smoke, despite just being a professional football player for two years. He never showed the proper commitment in being a football player and at this point it's a longshot for him to ever get back into the NFL. He has to clean up his personal life first before he can even start thinking about his football career.

4 4. Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan hasn't had many fan incidents, but has been extremely rude to fans and the people that support him. He has a very cocky attitude with fans and has never been a people person. Fans who have never met Jordan look up to him, but when you meet him your opinion may change. One incident that shows Jordan to be a jerk is an altercation he had with rapper Chamillionaire. The rapper Chamillionaire finally got the chance to meet his childhood hero but when he asked Jordan for a picture, Jordan said “You know what, I tell you what, you pay $15,000 right now for a jersey from me and I’ll take a picture with you." Not only did Jordan refuse to take a picture with him, but was also blatantly rude to Chamillionaire.

It might be best to just admire Jordan's work from a distance. He's one of those guys who would probably let you down if you ever met him.

3 3. Chris Perez

Known for being extremely obnoxious, Chris Perez had an altercation with a fan from an opposing team. The fan instigated Chris Perez from the stands by telling him to come over to talk. This turned into a cursing argument about which team was better. The video of the incident showed Chris Perez's classless side and his immaturity leading to a negative reputation over a stupid argument with a fan.

Professional players should know how to ignore fans who are only trying to get a reaction out of them. If Chris Perez just ignored this man, he could have avoided the bad reputation he now has. Perez commented on the incident, saying he had no regret over it. "I don't regret it," Perez said shortly after the incident. "Looking back it's not the best thing to be on the Internet and stuff. I had no idea they were videotaping it. I wouldn't have done it. Looking back, that's what he was planning. So he got me.

2 2. Ray Rice

An athlete's wife is definitely his number one fan on and off the field, but in this situation things turned a little violent with Ray Rice and his fiancee at the time, now his wife. Video surfaced of Ray Rice knocking his wife unconscious in an elevator at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City. Rice was prosecuted and had to complete a 12 month pretrial program. Ray Rice was also suspended two games from the NFL. The light suspension was heavily scrutinized and once video surfaced of the incident, Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL. Perhaps feeling the need to make an example of him, Rice has yet to be signed by a team.

The Baltimore Ravens offered their fans to exchange any Ray Rice merchandise for something else at their team store, as Rice undoubtedly let many Ravens fans down with this incident.

It's a shame that he made that horrible decision as he was considered to be one of the best players in the league but is now known as a jerk.

1 1. Metta World Peace

Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, is known for being in one of the biggest brawls in NBA history. After a fight on the court between some players was broken up, a fan in the stands threw a soda at Ron Artest. Artest immediately jumps up into the crowd and causes a legendary fight. This whole incident has caused the players involved to lose millions of dollars in salary and some charges of assault which led to probation for the five players.

This incident has also led to increased security at NBA games. The fight was known as the "Malice At The Palace" and will go down as one of the worst days in NBA history. It's funny how someone who changes their name to "Metta World Peace" could cause the opposite. Amazingly, all these years later, Artest is still in the association, playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
