The wives and girlfriends, or WAGs, of high-profile sportsmen are a section of society which seem to captivate the general public. The media are fascinated by them, and track their every move. The term WAG literally means ‘Wives and Girlfriends’, yet it has taken on a certain pejorative effect since it was first coined by the English press at the 2006 World Cup.
There is a suggestion that comes with it that these women are somehow only with these sportsmen for ulterior reasons, and that they live a lifestyle of questionable taste. This is of course a wild generalization, and one built on very weak foundation, if any foundation exists at all. The women on this list are notable because they, unlike most, out-earn their sporting partners.
High-profile sportsmen are of course very well-paid. For this reason it is unsurprising that they rarely find a partner of even greater income. There are some very wealthy “WAG’s” such as Victoria Beckham and Hayden Panettiere who earn vast sums of money, but still not as much as their superstar husbands/fiances David Beckham and Wladimir Klitschko. Here are the top 15 athletes whose WAGs make more than them.
15. Wayne Bridge & Frankie Sandford
Ex-England, Chelsea and Manchester City full-back Wayne Bridge was earning $125,000 a week in the prime of his career. His love life received almost global coverage after it was revealed that his wife had an affair with Bridge’s Chelsea and England teammate John Terry shortly before the 2010 World Cup. The pair broke up but Bridge wasn’t single for long and started dating The Saturday’s group member Frankie Sandford in December of 2010. The couple had their first child in 2013, married in 2014 and had their second child on August 15th 2015. Bridge earns a fraction of what he used to, now playing in the English second tier for Brighton, whilst Frankie is in a group which have sold over 5 million records to date.
14. Mike Fisher & Carrie Underwood
At 35 years old hockey player Mike Fisher has had a very impressive career, with 16 seasons in the NHL to date, as well as two seasons in the OHL and one season spent with EV Zug playing in the NLA in Switzerland. Known for having one of the hardest slapshots in the NHL, Fisher has spent the last five seasons with the Nashville Predators. Fisher met country music singer Carrie Underwood backstage after a gig in 2008, and the pair got married in 2010. Fisher is worth a sizeable $30 million, but Underwood has raked in over double that, with a current net worth estimated at $70 million.

Retired NBA player Daniel Gibson spent his entire seven year career playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and he was named the NBA Rookie Challenge MVP back in 2008. Gibson married R&B singer Keyshia Cole in 2011, and although the two separated in 2014, they are still married. There is little between the pair regarding wealth, although Cole edges it, worth a reported $9.5 million in comparison to Gibson’s $9 million.
12. Eric Johnson & Jessica Simpson
Eric Johnson was a very good tight end when fit. Sadly, that was all too infrequent. Johnson spent the entire 2003 and 2005 seasons injured, and missed a large chunk of his eight year career through injury. He played the vast majority of his career for the San Francisco 49ers, before a brief stint with the New Orleans Saints. Johnson retired from the sport in 2008, and began dating Jessica Simpson two years later. The couple married in 2014 and have two children. Webb was Miss Alabama USA 2012 and has since become something of a TV personality. McCarron’s contract with Bengals is worth $2.4 million, spread out over 4 years, but Webb is still estimated to be worth more than the quarterback.
8. Grigor Dimitrov & Maria Sharapova
A slightly unusual entry this one in the sense that the wife/girlfriend of this athlete, is also another athlete. Maria Sharapova previously dated Slovenian basketball star Sasha Vujacic, before the pair split up and she began dating fellow tennis player Grigor Dimitrov. Current world number 17 ranking Dimitrov peaked at 8th place and has won 4 career titles, but no Grand Slams. He is Bulgaria’s all-time greatest male tennis player, and resides in Monaco. Sharapova meanwhile has won 35 career titles, including 5 Grand Slams, and she ranks behind only the Williams sisters in terms of active players trophy hauls. Dimitrov has a net worth of $6.5 million, whilst Sharapova’s net worth is estimated at $150 million. The couple reportedly split up in July 2015.
7. Andy Roddick & Brooklyn Decker

3. Hank Baskett & Kendra Wilkinson

Arguably the greatest achievement of Baskett’s career came in 2009, when he became an AFC Champion with the Indianapolis Colts. Baskett married Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson in 2009, and they have since had two children together. Like some of the others on this list, Baskett and Wilkinson are worth fairly similar amounts – around $6 million – but Kendra is making far more currently through her reality TV work compared to Baskett who has now been retired for four years and seen his income drop off.

1. Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen
