In the age of social media and around the clock sports coverage, professional athletes are more visible than ever before. For many of today’s top sports stars, the added attention can be used as a way to help market themselves and even land lucrative endorsement deals in some cases.
However, there are also several downsides to being constantly in the public eye. This can be especially true for those who are known to be fashionably challenged at times. That being said, some athletes have even used their fashions sense (or lack thereof ) as a part of their persona.
In some cases, celebrities may wear a certain outfit to generate publicity. Dennis Rodman wearing a wedding dress back in the late 1990s to promote his book is a good example of an athlete using fashion to get folks' attention.
Of course, there are also times when pros just simply make some poor wardrobe choice. In either case, it can often result in some hilarious and perhaps even embarrassing images.
With that in mind, we have gathered 15 photos of star athletes making some questionable clothing choices. These fashion fouls can be found in nearly every sport, and the offenders are names that even casual sports fans will likely recognize.
15 Sammy Sosa And The Sunset
Due to the fact that our cowboy looks a bit different then he did in his playing days, folks may not even realize that the gentleman in this picture is retired MLB slugger Sammy Sosa. With this outfit, it’s a bit hard to tell if he is attempting to channel his inner John Wayne or getting ready to host an 8-year-old’s birthday party. Despite the fact that this image appears to have been captured by professional photographer, it’s still probably fair to say that this isn’t Sosa’s best look.
Sammy Sosa is a former outfielder who spent most of his baseball career as a member of the Chicago Cubs. Sosa is best remembered for his 1998 season where he and slugger Mark McGwire both attempted to break the single-season home run record.
14 A Vest To Remember
Rochester, Minnesota’s Bethanie Mattek-Sands is known for wearing some of the most bizarre outfits one can ever expect to find a professional tennis court. Her spiked vest with half-tennis balls attached, shown in this image, is an excellent example. It appears that she may be trying to pay homage to Bowser, a villain in the popular Super Mario Brothers video games series. One can say what they will about the outfit choice, but one can’t accuse Mattek-Sands of being bashful when it comes to wardrobe selection.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands is 32-year-old tennis standout who is best known for her play as a doubles competitor. In fact, she was even ranked as the number 1 doubles player in the world as recently as January 9, 2017.
13 Unique Uniform
There have been times when the Williams sisters have definitely given Bethanie Mattek-Sands a run for her money when it comes to wearing wild outfits on the court. Here we see Venus Williams spoting attire that probably won’t be winning her any best-dressed awards. The yellow top with a partially see-through midsection combined with the multicolor skirt is anything but subtle. While Venus Williams' fashion choices may be questionable, her skill on the court certainly isn’t.
While an argument can be made the Serena Williams is the best female tennis player of all-time, her sister Venus is also in the midst of a Hall of Fame-worthy career. Venus Williams has won Wimbledon an impressive five times and even at 37 years of age, is still the number 8 ranked singles player in the world.
12 Smoking Jacket
In truth, it would be quite easy to put together an article featuring the many looks of golfer John Daly over the years. His outfits, such as the one shown here, have helped to earn him a reputation as a man who doesn’t conform to the traditional country club look. This image, which features Daly in a gaudy jacket, smoking a cigarette sums his persona up rather nicely. In a sport that has a reputation for being a bit prim and proper at times, John Daly has decided to play by his own rules.
Daly finest moments on the green occurred in the 1990s. Arguably the greatest moment of his career came when he won the 1991 PGA Championship. However, his 1995 Open Championship victory was also a major highlight.
11 Wild Wilson
Baseball star Brian Wilson was known for her his flamboyant personality during his time in the majors. Here we see the former All-Star closer wearing a spandex tuxedo at the 2011 ESPY Awards. Wilson almost looks like a bearded penguin in the unique attire shown in the pic. However, this wasn’t the first time Wilson decided to go for a bold look. In 2010, as a member of the San Francisco Giants, the eccentric reliever decided to wear a mohawk during the team's playoff run. In a sport where some may find it difficult to stand out, Brian Wilson found a way.
Wilson was a relief pitcher who spends the majority of his career with the Giants. He was a three-time All-Star who helped San Francisco capture a World Series title in 2010 and was also the National League’s saves leader that year.
10 Yellow Jacket
Roxanne Modafferi is a mixed martial artist who currently fights for the Ulitmate Fighting Championship. Over the years she has been known to wear some unique cosplay-inspired outfits at weigh-ins and appearances. While this outfit, which features a yellow trench coat, headband, and a black shirt, is probably paying homage to a comic book or video game character; the reference (if there is one) might be too obscure for most casual fans to get. That being said, as long as she's having fun, why not go for it?
Roxanne Modafferi is a 35-year-old fighter out of Wilmington, Delaware. She recently fought for the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship, losing a close decision to the current champ, Nicco Montana. She has been competing professionally since 2003 and is something of a pioneer in the world of women’s mixed martial arts.
9 Merry Christmas
Here we see professional basketball player Spencer Hawes dressed for the holiday season, sitting next to then-teammate, Blake Griffin. Standing a roughly 7-foot-1, Hawes is going to attract some attention wherever he goes. That being said, this Christmas tree themed suit guarantees we won’t be able to avoid detection. The tall NBA mainstay certainly won’t be accused of not being in the holiday spirit, while wearing this eye-catching outfit.
After an excellent college career, Seattle, Washington’s Spencer Hawes was drafted 10th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2007 NBA Draft. The journeyman center has played for a number of teams over the course of her his professional career. The Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, and most recently, the Milwaukee Bucks are among the organizations he was played for since joining the league.
8 Man Of Steel
In most cases, the punter isn’t a position that gets a lot of attention in the National Football League. This may be why Oakland Raiders punter Marquette King decided to dress up like Superman for the ESPYs. While the event isn’t traditionally known as a costume party, let’s be honest, if King shows up in a regular outfit he probably isn’t getting noticed. While wearing a superhero get up to a formal event may not be the best choice, it is certainly a memorable one.
Marquette King is an NFL punter who is originally from Macon, Georgia. At present, he is the only African-American punter in the league. The 29-year-old was a second-team All-Pro in 2016 and also led the NFL in punting yards back in 2014.
7 USA! USA!
Here we see golfer John Daly proudly sporting a pair of American flag-themed pants after sending the ball soaring. One has to wonder if he simply rolled out of bed, put the jacket on, and headed to the course. If they gave out college degrees in not giving a damn, Daly would most certainly have a Ph.D. He is, and will likely forever remain, one of the sport's most memorable fashion icons.
Outside of the PGA, John Daly has had some interesting business ventures. He formed a partnership with the American sportswear company Loudmouth Golf. Daly, who is known for his fondness of alcohol, also launched his own wine label known as John Daly Wines. The outspoken golfer even dabbled in music, releasing two studio albums, My Life and I Only Know One Way, the latter of which even featured guest vocals from a country music legend in Willie Nelson.
6 Like A Villain
Lake Wales, Florida's Amar’e Stoudemire had a career in the National Basketball Association that spanned 15 years. While the 6-foot-10 All-Star definitely put some time and effort into this outfit, it may not have turned out as expected. The standout power forward sort of looks like a villain in a superhero film. Maybe it’s the fur scarf. It would not be hard to imagine Stoudemire ordering some followers to attack Batman while wearing this number.
Amar'e Stoudemire was the 9th-overall pick in 2002 NBA Draft, where he was selected by the Phoenix Suns. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2002 and is a six-time All-Star. Stoudemire also helped Team USA win a bronze medal at the summer Olympic Games, held in Athens back in 2004.
5 Flower Power
Dennis Rodman has been making headlines since the 1990s with his outrageous fashion choices. Many folks will likely remember when he wore a wedding dress back in 1996 in order to promote the release of his autobiography. People have called the former NBA star many things over the years, but boring hasn’t been one of them. There is so much going on with this outfit that it’s hard to know where to start. It almost looks like a clown was hit by a car, which resulted in this interesting piece of attire.
Dennis Rodman is a former basketball player and also an occasional professional wrestler. He is best remembered for his time as a member of the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. He is a seven-time NBA rebounding champ and has been a member of five NBA championship teams.
4 Orange Is The New Orange
Rickie Fowler is a 29-year-old golfer who hails from Murrieta, California. The all orange outfit isn’t as outrageous as some of John Daly’s choices, but it certainly won’t go unnoticed. With this all orange number, Fowler looks like he’s playing golf at a local frat party as opposed to on the PGA tour.
Rickie Fowler has had an outstanding career since turning pro b 2010. In his debut season, he was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. He was ranked as high as 4th in the Official World Golf Rankings back in January of 2016, after winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He is also a member of the golfing boy band known as the “Golf Boys,” who released the popular YouTube video for their song “Oh Oh Oh.”
3 Tennis Ball Dress?
Tennis star Bethanie Mattek-Sands kind of looks like of those yellow chicks one might have expected to get in an Easter basket as a child. The 5-foot-6 blonde seemingly never fails to produce an outfit that will have fans talking, and the one pictured here is certainly no exception. The unique styles she has produced over the years have resulted in the media referring to her as the “Lady Gaga” of tennis. If nothing else, she deserves points for creativity.
While her outfits may be cause for laughter in some instances, Bethanie Mattek-Sands is all business of the court. As a doubles player, she has won both the Australian Open and the French Open on two separate occasions. She also took 1st at the US Open in 2016.
2 Unicorn Hat
The Kentucky Derby always features some of the wildest outfits one can expect to find anywhere. Moreover, some of the most unique hats in the world can be found at the event. Folks who have been watching the 2018 Winter Olympics recognize former figure skaters (and current commentators) Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir. Interestingly enough, Weir is also a fashion designer and has even designed some of his own costumes in the past. Credentials aside, the Unicorn –themed hat may still be a little too wild, even by Kentucky Derby standards.
Johnny Weir is a figure skater who is known for his appearances in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games. He also provided commentary for the Olympic Games alongside his partner the picture, Tara Lipinski.
1 In Bloom
While not technically a professional athlete, Craig Sager had a remarkable career as a sports reporter. He was known for his impressive vest collection, and after seeing this image, it isn’t difficult to figure out why. The flower-themed vest might even make sports stars like John Daly and Bethanie Mattek-Sands blush. That being said, one still has to appreciate Sager’s bold style which helped him stand out from other sideline reporters.
Originally from Batavia, Illinois, Craig Sager is probably best remembered as a sideline reporter for the National Basketball Association. However, he covered a wide array of sports of the course of his career including baseball, soccer, and even curling. Sadly, Sager passed in December of 2016. The NBA honored him in 2017 by posthumously awarding him the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Curt Gowdy Media Award.
