Question: What’s the difference between a large pizza and a poker player?
Answer: The large pizza can feed a family of four.
This anecdote certainly applies to many, but definitely not all poker players. Some poker players make a very comfortable living. Over the past several years, poker’s popularity has grown to an all-time high. Most people have seen a few exciting hands play out on television and thought “I can do that.” Beware; it’s not as easy as it looks. Sure, almost anyone with a chip and a chair can get in on the action, but there is much more to poker than wearing big sunglasses, hiding one’s face and knowing the rules. One of the attractive things about poker is that it is accessible to almost everyone. In casinos, card rooms or in private homes, there is a game going on at any given time. There are also massive amounts of resources that people can use to learn the ropes and sharpen their game.
The explosion and even easier access to online poker has introduced countless Doyle Brunson and Annie Duke wannabes. Caution must be taken though. For every successful poker player, there are thousands of losers. Many of today’s top players started out anonymously checking, raising and bluffing in front of their computer screens. The more established sites will have tens of thousands of player’s playing at all times of the day. While some governments have tried to stop online poker, it has proven a nearly impossible task.
In the days of old, it was considered “unladylike” for a woman to be seen at a poker table.
