When the word athlete comes to our mind, we instinctively think of someone who is, you know, athletic. You imagine the people who would be on the top of the food chain if we humans were cannibals. You think huge biceps, triceps, and six-packs. But that is not the case with every single athlete. In every sport, there is always that one guy who is so outside of the curve in terms of looking athletic that if you saw him on the street, you would not believe he was a professional athlete.
Baseball has a ton of these guys, in basketball you might find one or two who can still play because they are huge, soccer has its own brand of unathletic guys, and even hockey has players with a few extra pounds. Either way, all of these guys are still professional athletes, and one of the perks that seem to come along with the job is that they usually go out with beautiful women.
The funny paradox here is that while these guys are athletes, and most of their wives or girlfriends are not, their significant others can more often than not look more athletic than the professional. Yes, it doesn’t make any sense, but it happens. You will see pictures of athletes getting married, and you will actually wonder who the person in that picture who plays a professional sport is and who is the one who doesn’t.
So get ready to feel good about your few extra pounds because here are 15 sports stars with wives that look more athletic than they do.
15. The Big Show
The Big Show has been a professional wrestler since 1995. Can you imagine how tough it has to be to maintain a footing in the wrestling world for so long? And yet, by sheer size and entertainment value, this guy is still around, and he’s still rocking in the WWE. During his career, he was a one-time ECW World Champion, a two-time World Heavyweight Champion, and a WWE Intercontinental Champion just to name a few of the belts this guy has won.
Interestingly enough, what makes The Big Show such a hit in the wrestling world is also the reason he is on this list. This guy is huge, and he does not appear to be as athletic as he actually is. With that, it kind of becomes easy for anyone who dates him to look fitter than him. And that was exactly what his wife Bess Katramados did.
14. John Daly
Here is one brand of athletes we had almost forgotten would make for a great well to draw from for this list. Professional golfers are professional athletes, but unlike athletes from other sports, they don’t seem to have to worry that much about their figure. Sure, you need to be able to have the stamina to play 18 holes, but that is entirely different from playing a full football or basketball game. With that, golf has some of the fattest athletes in the world. Seriously, some of these guys make baseball players look like statues of Greek gods. A perfect example is the 51-year-old John Daly.
Daly has won several golf tournaments and seems to have enjoyed the perks that came with the prizes way more than he enjoyed a day in the gym. Still, it doesn’t matter how big he is. He is still dating the beautiful Anna Cladakis.
13. Vince Wilfork
If there is one particular position that might gather most overweight people in professional sports, it would be NFL defensive tackle. Don’t be mistaken, there are several fit defensive tackles, but the vast majority of these guys is made out of massive human beings who would literally make you soil yourself if you ever saw them on the street.
Just imagine calmly walking down the street, then suddenly turning a corner and finding yourself face to face with a 6’2” 325 pound beast of a man. That is something scary to imagine, but definitely something that happened to many people who live in the same area as Vince Wilfork.
This two-time Super Bowl champion is the poster child for what an NFL defensive tackle looks like. His wife might not even be the fittest of wags, but Bianca Wilfork undoubtedly looks fitter than good old Vince.
12. Glenn Davis
There could not be a better representative for the NBA on this list than Glen “Big Baby” Davis. If someone’s nickname is Big Baby, and that someone is a professional basketball player, you know that there is a paradox involved.
Sure, Glen Davis has more baby-like features than his colleagues in the NBA. But that is exactly where the similarities to babies stop. This is a huge guy if we are to compare him to your regular human being. Davis is 6’9” tall and weighs in at about 289 pounds.
This peculiar NBA character got married in 2013, but quickly divorced his first wife and then was reportedly going out with a model named Jasmin Jaye, who clearly took better care of her figure than Davis used to do at the time.
11. Fedor Emelianenko
Fedor Emelianenko is one of the greatest icons in the history of mixed martial arts. At 40 years old, Fedor is still active and kicking some ass despite his last fight against Matt Mitrione in June being a loss. That is because this guy has a professional mixed martial arts record of 36 wins and five losses. A record like this is beyond impressive. More than that, even while he was a successful mixed martial artist, Fedor was still winning gold medals left and right in Combat Sambo competitions.
The one thing about Fedor is that while he looks menacing, and you would not want to get into a bar fight with him, this is a guy who doesn’t look that fit. As a matter fact, he may look stronger, but his wife Oksana looks fitter than he does.
10. Tyson Fury
Boxing is one of those sports in which we would imagine every fighter would have to be extremely fit. After watching Rocky a couple of thousand times, and keeping up with boxing training videos, one should reckon that the amount of cardio these guys have to do to prepare for fights is ridiculous. It is almost unbelievable to imagine that someone who has to jump rope for as much time as a professional boxer does and has to run every morning like they usually do, would still not look as fit as a bodybuilder.
Well, that is exactly the case with the Gypsy King, Tyson Fury. This heavyweight out of Manchester has a professional record of 25 wins and zero losses. But while no one can hold their own against Fury on the ring, in terms of looking fit, his wife Paris has him beat by a long shot.
9. Angel Cabrera
As the first South American man on our list, Angel Cabrera is a guy who draws wandering eyes wherever he goes. But that is not because he won a Masters Tournament in 2009, or that he won the 2007 US open. Nor is it because he has amassed 51 wins as a professional golfer. No, Cabrera draws attention to himself because he is a big guy. You definitely would not want to sit next to him on a plane, unless you were flying first class, which is probably all he does.
Either way, El Pato is not exactly the prototype scientists would look towards if they were ever trying to make a perfect athlete. And yet, this guy still seems to attract some incredibly beautiful women to his side. Just take as an example the fact that he used to date Argentinian singer Coki Ramirez.
8. David Ortiz
If your name is “Big Papi,” you have to be a big dude. In the case of David Ortiz, that assumption holds true. At 6’3” and 230 pounds, Big Papi became one of the most folkloric figures in Boston Red Sox history. Not only for the Red Sox, but Ortiz is also an MLB legend. He was a 10-time All-Star, won three World Series, was the 2013 World Series MVP, won 7 Silver Slugger Awards, and the list goes on and on. Big Papi finished his 20-year career in the MLB with an impressive 541 home runs to his name. He had 38 during his last season with the Red Sox, in which he was already 40 years old.
But while he was a beast on the baseball field, Ortiz often received criticism for being overweight at times. Not that it ever seemed to affect his play, but enough for us to conclude that his wife Tiffany looks fitter than he does.
7. Charles Barkley
Charles Barkley is arguably one of the funniest athletes who turned pundit in sports. From his hilarious golf swing to the back in forth with Shaq and Kenny Smith on TNT, this guy is a blast to watch on TV. The only thing more entertaining than watching him now was watching him while he was still playing. Seriously, how many guys can become superstars and have nicknames like “The Round Mound of Rebound?”
Yes, Chuck was far from being in ideal shape throughout his whole career. Nevertheless, he was always one of the top players in the league. He has also been a married man since 1989 when he tied the knot with Maureen Blumhardt. And, as one would imagine, it was never too hard for Maureen to look fitter than her husband.
Have you ever heard the expression that someone threw their talent down the drain? Well, this is the perfect example of that. For those of you who are not soccer fans, Adriano “the Emperor,” was touted as a striker who would eventually become one of the greatest of all time. This guy had everything. Speed, power, flair, and an almost supernatural ability for putting the ball into the back of the net; but somewhere along the way, he just stopped being himself.
His career started slowing down, and he moved away from Europe and back to Brazil, where for a brief period he tried to get back on track but was never able to return to his superstar ways. He also gained a lot of weight, which didn’t stop him from dating some of the finest women in Brazil. That was the case when rumors broke out that he was going out with a bodybuilder named Leticia Caron.
5. C.C. Sabathia
You tell me; Im too social and will talk to anyone. I ask way too many questions to people I have no business asking. I take on too many projects then get mad when I'm overwhelmed. When I need to get Laser hair removal because you can see a mustache coming and I will need a line up soon. When my breath stinks and to take not one but two breath mints. That you like my body best when I'm running (keep it tight)…… all while you're sitting on the ? and I'm standing by the sink (we have our best talks in the bathroom) and you tell me to turn around when it's time to wipe! ? THIS is why we have lasted this long, 14 years and counting…I only ask you continue to keep it ? with me and we will last forever! Happy Anniversary to my best friend, baby daddy, my EVERYTHING @cc_sabathia I Love you! ????
If consistency were the name of the game, C.C. Sabathia would be part of the oligarchy of pitchers who ruled baseball during the past decade. Year in and year out, people keep asking if Sabathia will be still able to play despite the extra pounds he puts on every off-season. And like a clock, every time the rumors start, C.C. goes back and starts pitching just like he did the year before.
It is hard to imagine that someone who weighs around 300 pounds would be able to be consistent as a professional baseball player. Nevertheless, that is what Sabathia’s career has been all about. In 17 years in the MLB, the Yankees’ pitcher has a record of 231 wins and 144 losses with almost 2800 strikeouts to his name. But as you might imagine, his wife Amber doesn’t have such a hard time looking fitter than her husband’s 300 pound figure.
4. Phil Mickelson
The last golfer on our list, Phil Mickelson is also the one with most significant victories in his career. He has won three Masters Tournaments, one The Open Championship, and one PGA Championship. Mickelson was also inducted into the World Golf Hall Of Fame in 2012. He is one of those names who even people who don’t follow golf might know. But golfing aside, this San Diego lefty is also an example when it comes to family. Mickelson has been married to his wife Amy since 1996, and the couple has three children.
What we hope for Mickelson’s children is that they decide to hit the gym a little more often than their good old dad. It might not hurt his golf game that much, but Mickelson is not an athletic player. Even his wife Amy seems to be more athletic than this golf Hall of Famer.
3. Phil Kessel
When he is on the rink, Phil Kessel is a stud. This guy can score like few others in the game of hockey. Just in this last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kessel tallied 23 goals and 47 assists in 82 games. He was one of the main reasons of why the Penguins managed to repeat their Stanley Cup championship run. Now, when it comes to appearances, Kessel is not what you would expect from a star hockey player. Don’t get us wrong, this guy is as strong as they come, but he certainly does not look as fit as you would imagine a professional athlete of his grandeur would.
2. Prince Fielder
Prince Fielder is one of those sluggers you always want on your team. Since his MLB debut in 2005, Fielder has smashed 319 home runs in 1645 hits with a batting average of .283. He also has won his share of awards. Fielder was selected an All-Star in six different occasions, he was the AL Comeback Player of the Year in 2015, he won three Silver Slugger Awards, and he led the NL in home runs in 2007 among other accolades.
But like many other baseball players, Fielder has a few extra pounds, which is not the case with his wife, Chanel. These two married in the same year of Fielder’s debut and despite some bumps along the road, like that time when Chanel was allegedly sleeping with one of Fielder’s teammates, they are the kind of couple that fits this list rather well.
If you don’t love soccer, it is probably because you never watched this guy play. Some people just have the kind of talent that transcends what their body can do. Ronaldo is the perfect example of a guy who no matter how fat he got, was still dominant no matter where he went. This guy fought with the scale throughout his whole career and is still considered one of the greatest strikers who ever lived.
With the fame and success he got from his playing career, Ronaldo has an estimated net worth of around $150 million. When you have that kind of money, you’d also think it might be okay to skip the gym once in a while. But the thing about Ronaldo is that despite his weight, he has always been accompanied by a beautiful woman. The example we will give you is the model he is currently dating, Celina.
