In North America, there are four major league professional sports that get the most attention. The four major league professional sports are the NFL, NBA, MLB and the NHL. Most big cities have at least one or more major league professional sport franchises. A handful of cities have all four major league professional sport teams. Cities such as Boston and Pittsburgh have experienced great success with their sport teams as the teams have won championships consistently. Other cities such as Seattle have such started to taste success as the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks have been in the Super Bowl the last two seasons and won the Super Bowl last year.
However, there are cities that haven’t see their teams have great success and the outlook for any championship level team is grim. Cities like New York and Philadelphia and have seen their teams win championships but it was such a long time ago and the current teams aren't doing well either. Some cities like Buffalo and Charlotte have yet to see their professional sport teams win a single championship.
While Charlotte and Buffalo stand out among the worst sport cities there are cities that have fared worse than those two cities. A list was created of the 20 worst sport cities in North America. The list features cities that have one or more major league professional sport franchises and it ranks the cities by those that have some of the longest active championship drought.
This is in no way a knock on he fan bases. The list is ranked by the city's recent success in terms of championships. This will take into account the big four pro leagues in North America only, (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL). Listed below with an explanation are the top 20 worst sport cities in North America.

20 Indianapolis, Indiana
Indianapolis starts off the list as one of the worst sport cities in North America. The city is one of the worst sports cities because their only championship came nine years ago. Indianapolis has two professional sports franchises which are the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and the NBA's Indiana Pacers. The Indianapolis Colts have won the Super Bowl once in 2006.
The Indiana Pacers have yet to win the NBA Championship and have appeared in the NBA Finals once back in 2000. There are great fans in Indianapolis yet the Colts and the Pacers haven't reached the finals in a while. The Colts have experienced a ton of regular season success in Indianapolis but have failed to convert it into a good amount of championships.
19 Tampa Bay, Florida
Tampa Bay is one of the worst sport cities of North America because the city has only one championship which was 13 years ago. Tampa Bay has two professional sport franchises which are the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the MLB's Tampa Bay Rays. The Buccaneers won the SuperBowl once in 2002. The Tampa Bay Rays have never won the World Series but did make an appearance in 2008.
Unfortunately for Tampa Bay sport fans it might be a while before the Rays and Buccaneers are championship level teams again. The Rays also have constant trouble attracting fans to their outdated stadium and the Bucs just went through another putrid season. At least football fans in the city can expect to welcome Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota in the next couple of months.
18 Denver, Colorado
Denver made the list as one of the worst sport cities because although the city has four championships, the last one was almost 14 years ago. All 4 major league professional sport franchises are in Denver. The NFL's Denver Broncos won two Super Bowls back in the 1997 and 1998 seasons. The NHL's Colorado Avalanche have won two Stanley Cups back in 1996 and in 2001. The NBA's Denver Nuggets have never won the NBA Championship nor have made an appearance in the NBA Finals. The MLB's Colorado Rockies have also never won the World Series and only appeared once back in 2007. Both the Broncos and the Avalanche look promising to repeat their previous success but the city is starving for a championship in any sport.
17 Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix is one of the worst sport cities in North America because the city has only one championship which was over 14 years ago. All four major league professional sports franchises are in Phoenix. The NFL's Arizona Cardinals have never won the Super Bowl making their only appearance in Super Bowl XLIII. The NBA's Phoenix Suns have never won the NBA Championship but made the NBA Finals in 1976 and in 1993. The NHL's Phoenix Coyotes have never won the Stanley Cup nor have made the Stanley Cup Final.
The MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks won the city's only championship, a World Series back in 2001. Phoenix sport fans have felt the pain many times of their teams reaching the finals yet not winning most of the time.
16 Houston, Texas
Houston is well known for being one of the worst sport cities in North America because the city only has two championships and the last one was almost 20 years ago. Houston has three professional sport franchises which are the MLB's Houston Astros, the NBA's Houston Rockets and the NFL's Houston Texans.
The Astros have never won the World Series and made an appearance back in 2005. The Rockets won two NBA titles back in 1994 and in 1995.
The Texans have never won the Super Bowl nor have made an appearance. Granted, they only began play in 2002, but the city's original franchise the Oilers never won a Super Bowl either, only making it to the big game three years after their move to Tennessee.
There is some good news for Houston sports fans as the Rockets are considered title contenders for the NBA Championship.
15 Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta is another city that is well known for being one of the worst sport cities in North America. It is one of the worst sport cities because the city only has two championships and the last championship won was almost 20 years ago.

The Braves franchise has won the World Series in Atlanta once back in 1995. The Hawks last won the NBA Championship way back in 1958. The Atlanta Falcons have never won the Super Bowl and their only appearance was back in 1998.
The city also recently lost its NHL franchise, when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg back in 2011.
Their tide may finally turn this season Atlanta sport fans have something to cheer about as the Hawks are in the mix for contenders of the NBA Championship.
14 Montreal, Quebec
Montreal unfortunately is among the worst major sport cities in North America despite the city having 24 championships. Montreal is one of the worst sport cities because the last championship won was almost 22 years ago. Only one major professional sports franchise is in the city. You could make a case for the Impact of the MLS, but that league hasn't quite reached the status of its North American counterparts. The city lost its baseball team back in 2004 and the CFL's Montreal Alouettes have had trouble selling out.
The iconic Montreal Canadiens have a rich history and have won a record 24 Stanley Cups. The last Cup they won was in 1993. Hockey fans in Montreal aren't too sad right now, as the Canadiens are one of the top teams right now and are possible Cup contenders this year. Many have the opinion that Montreal is not a great sports city, but merely a Habs city.
13 Toronto, Ontario
T0ronto, like Montreal has the unfortunate distinction of being named as one of the worst sport cities in North America. The city has 15 championships but the last championship won was almost 22 years ago. Toronto has three major professional sport franchises which are the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, the MLB's Toronto Blue Jays and the NBA's Toronto Raptors. The Maple Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cups yet the last Cup was won way back in 1967. The Blue Jays have won two World Series back in 1992 and in 1993. The Toronto Raptors have not won the NBA Championship nor have made it to the NBA Finals. There is some hope in the form of the Toronto Raptors as they have become one of the league's best teams and could contend for a title soon. As for the Leafs? Yeesh.
12 Minneapolis, Minnesota
Not many cities deserve a championship more than Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota in general. The city has only three championships and the last championship won was almost 24 years ago. All four major league professional sport teams are in Minneapolis. The NFL's Minnesota Vikings have lost in all four Super Bowl appearances.
The MLB's Minnesota Twins have won the World Series twice back in 1987 and in 1991. The NHL's Minnesota Wild has never won the Stanley Cup nor did the North Stars back in the day. The NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves have also never won the NBA Championship nor made the NBA Finals. Minneapolis sport fans continue to wait and hope that one day one of their teams will bring them some hardware.
11 Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. is among one of the worst sport cities in North America because the city has six championships but the last championship won was 24 years ago. All four major league professional sports franchises are in the nation's capital.
The NFL's Washington Redskins won two NFL Championships way back in 1937 and in 1942 and three Super Bowls in 1982, 1987 and in 1991. The NBA's Washington Wizards have won one NBA Championship back in 1978. The MLB's Washington Nationals have never won the World Series nor have made an appearance (the Senators won one, back in 1924). The NHL's Washington Capitals have never won the Stanley Cup and made their only appearance at the Stanley Cup Final back in 1998. Washington sport fans should hold out hope for the Nationals as they could contend for the World Series next season.
10 Cincinnati, Ohio
Cincinnati is among one of the worst sport cities in North America because the city has just five championships and the last championship won was almost 25 years ago. Cincinnati has two professional sports franchises which are the MLB's Reds and the NFL's Bengals. The Cincinnati Reds have accounted for all five of the city's championships, back in 1919, 1940, 1975, 1976 and 1990. The Cincinnati Bengals have never won the Super Bowl, with two appearances back in 1981 and in 1988. They have not won a playoff game since January 6, 1991.
Sports fans in Cincinnati are going to have to be patient as the Bengals improve and could be in the near future one of the top NFL teams.
9 Oakland, California
Oakland has certainly hit a dark patch, particularly in the last decade. The city has just seven championships and the last championship won was almost 26 years ago. Oakland has two professional sport franchises which are the MLB's Athletics and the NFL's Raiders. The A's have won four World Series in Oakland from 1972 to 1974 and in 1989.
The Raiders have won three Super Bowls, but only two was as the Oakland Raiders. The other came in their Los Angeles years.
The Raiders and Athletics have been disappointing lately so Oakland sport fans should avoid the misery and cheer for other teams.
8 Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City lands here because the city's last championship won was almost 30 years ago! Kansas City has two professional sports teams with die-hard fans, which are the MLB's Kansas City Royals and the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs won the AFL Championship in 1966 and won Super Bowl IV. They have not won a playoff game in over 20 years.
The Kansas City Royals won the World Series once back in 1985. After years of futility, (29 years with no playoff appearances) the Royals forced the Giants to seven games in the 2014 Fall Classic and could return to the World Series next season.
7 Nashville, Tennessee
Nashville, Tennessee is among the worst sport cities in the world because their two professional sport teams have failed to win a championship so far. The two professional franchises are the NFL's Tennessee Titans and the NHL's Nashville Predators. The Titans have not won the Super Bowl, painfully losing in their only appearance, back in Super Bowl XXXIV. The Predators have also not won the Stanley Cup nor have they made an appearance past the second round of the playoffs. However, this year could be different as the Predators have been one of the best teams this season and are considered Stanley Cup contenders. The city of Nashville could potentially have their first championship.
6 Charlotte, North Carolina
We're getting to the creme de la creme, so to speak. As beautiful as the city is, they have no major championships to show for it. Charlotte has two major franchises which are the NFL's Carolina Panthers and the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. The Carolina Panthers have never won the Super Bowl but made an appearance once back in 2003. The Charlotte Hornets have never won the NBA Championship nor have made it to the NBA Finals. Sports fans in Charlotte have some hope now with the Panthers having made the playoffs their past two seasons, but they want a championship badly. At least the city has Ric Flair's 30 World Title reigns to celebrate. Woo!
5 Jacksonville, Florida
Jacksonville is one of the worst sport cities in North America because the city has 0 championships. Worse yet, there is only one professional sports franchise in Jacksonville. It is the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, who routinely play in an empty stadium. They have never won the Super Bowl nor have they ever made an appearance. All they have are two AFC Championship appearances. Jacksonville sport fans may want to consider cheering for other Florida sports team as it could be a while before the Jaguars become worthy again.
4 Milwaukee, Wisconsin
It may have the country's best beer, but the city's only major sports championship was over 44 years ago! Milwaukee has two professional sport franchises which are the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks and the MLB's Milwaukee Brewers. The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Championship back in 1971. The Milwaukee Brewers never won the World Series and only appeared once in 1982. The outlook for a championship level team in Milwaukee doesn't look promising anytime soon. The closest thing they have is the Green Bay Packers, who play two hours north of Milwaukee.
3 Buffalo, New York
This city's only two championships came almost 50 years ago! Buffalo has two professional sport franchises which are the NFL's Bills and the NHL's Sabres. The Buffalo Bills won a pair of NFL championships back in 1964 and in 1965, but they painfully lost four consecutive Super Bowls in the 90s. The Buffalo Sabres have never won the Stanley Cup, making it to the final twice in 1975 and in 1999. Buffalo sports fans continue to hold out hope for a championship team to arrive soon.
2 Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland is the second worst sport city in North America because the city has 10 championships but the last championship won was 51 years ago! Cleveland has three professional sport franchises which are the NFL's Browns, the NBA's Cavaliers and the MLB's Indians. The Cleveland Browns have won eight championships (4 from the NFL and 4 from the AAFC) and the last championship was in 1964. The Cleveland Cavaliers have never won the NBA Championship, their only trip to the Finals coming in 2007. The Cleveland Indians have won two World Series back in 1920 and in 1948. Cleveland sport fans can take solace in the fact that the Cavaliers are considered title contenders and could possibly see the championship drought end this year.
1 San Diego, California
San Diego is the worst sports city in North America because the city's only championship came 52 years ago! It is the longest professional championship drought among all cities on this list. San Diego has two professional sports franchises which are the NFL's Chargers, who are in some danger of moving, and the MLB's Padres. The San Diego Chargers won the AFL Championsip once, way back in 1963. The San Diego Padres have never won the World Series and have appeared twice back in 1984 and in 1998. Sorry, San Diego sport fans. You may need to adopt a team from another city until the Padres and Chargers become relevant again. At least you have a beautiful city and beach.
