Super Bowl LII is over, the Patriots have finally been dethroned, and the world is now at peace. Tom Brady can stop making weird videos with his kids, Eli Manning can go to his "special" teacher, and Gronk can install a new security system! But still, us fans are clamoring for some more football news. Well, I guess you are going to have to wait until free agency and the draft to get your NFL rumors fix. But, we may just be able to control your urge with some unique NFL couples.
That's right, off the field, these athletes wed some of the most beautiful women in the world. Sometimes, you have the stereotypical, QB/Cheerleader marriage, and other times, these NFL marriages make you scratch your head? Some of these couples are shocking, while others defy the norms of traditional athlete nuptials. Whether it be that their spouses are in an entirely different profession or the woman is simply out of their league, the couples definitely turned some heads. Hey, the bottom line is being happy, so to the couples listed here that found happiness, we say congratulations. But for our purpose, today, we will say "I do" with some NFL players that have surprising spouses.
15 Jeff Garcia and Carmella DeCesare
It's not odd for quarterbacks to tie the knot with smokin' hot models, but the story of Jeff Garcia and Carmella DeCesare is slightly different. Before their nuptials in 2007, DeCesare was sentenced to 24 hours of community service for a violation on a restraining order against one of Garcia's mistresses! The four-time Pro Bowler even testified in court, stating "It’s embarrassing that I am here today, to be caught up in a situation like this."
Aside from the infidelity, there was some other juicy rumors flying around Garcia and his relationships. When his teammate, and outspoken diva receiver, Terrell Owens, was asked in an interview back in 2004 if Jeff Garcia was gay, he responded:
"Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat."
Surprisingly, the odd couple is still together today and has overcame the adversity of all the rumors. We've got to give them credit for that!
14 Eric Decker and Jessie James
How could we forget the eccentric couple of NFL wide receiver, Eric Decker, and his country singer WAG, Jessie James. The two celebrities are a staple on social media, broadcasting their romance to the world. Who could forget the 2016 Snapchat post that James captioned "Touch down big d*** decker!"
Still though, the odd couple seems to truly be in love, and James even opened up to In Touch Weekly in the fall about the couple's relationship, as they were expecting their third child.
“We’ll go out to a restaurant and sit at the bar and flirt and talk, but we also love eating cereal in bed watching ‘Naked and Afraid’.”
What a great story! Beats going to bed alone watching 'Naked and Afraid' while being naked...and afraid.
13 Brian Urlacher and Jenny McCarthy
Although some outlets claim that Urlacher and McCarthy were briefly married in the summer of 2012, we can neither confirm or deny the legitimacy of this nuptial rumor. Still though, it's evident that the Playboy model and middle linebacker had a romantic relationship, which is good enough to make our odd couple list.
The two celebs broke up after a few months of dating, but seem to remain on amicable terms. McCarthy told People that “Brian and I have decided to turn our romance into an amazing friendship. I will continue to be the biggest cheerleader for him. Go, Bears!” Damn, did the future Hall of Famer just get friend-zoned? Who knows? We like to think under Urlacher's bald head, there is a logical brain, and McCarthy's anti-vaxx claims were just too much for him!
12 Eric Johnson and Jessica Simpson
From quarterback Tony Romo, to tight end Eric Johnson, singer and actress, Jessica Simpson, has had her fair share of football boy toys. Simpson and Romo's relationship ended like his career, unsuccessful. Then, the former San Francisco 49er pass catcher met Simpson back in May of 2010, and the two began dating. Today, the power couple have two children together and were officially married in July of 2014. When a singer and athlete get together, it can sometimes can end in disaster. But, it seems like Johnson will stick with Simpson through thick and thin.
The two celebs planned to be married earlier than 2014, but according to Simpson, Johnson just "kept knocking her up." Not once, but twice! Looking back on the whole ordeal, Simpson told Leno:
"Apparently it was a part of God's plan for my life. I was extremely shocked...because I was going through a lot of hormonal changes, trying to get back to the old, vibrant Jessica. You know, it was kind of like a one-night stand. And it happened, all over again!"
11 Hank Baskett and Kendra Wilkinson
How does an average NFL receiver like Hank Baskett, bag a phenomenally gorgeous Playboy model like Kendra Wilkinson? Like every famous person does: at a celebrity golf tournament! The couple met in 2009, and wed just months later at the Playboy Mansion. It always seemed odd that the former Philadelphia Eagles pass catcher managed to tie the knot with a reality star and known-Chargers fan.
Well, if the premise of there marriage wasn't odd enough, just wait until you hear this juicy story. While Wilkinson was eight months pregnant with their child, Baskett was having an affair with a transgender model! That's not just conjecture, as the couple has confirmed the rumor. But, as all strong relationships do, Wilkinson and Baskett overcame the adversity of infidelity and after nine years, are still together today!
10 Chad Johnson and Evelyn Lozada
Two divas don't make a right! Back in 2010, the receiver formerly known as "Chad Ochocinco," proposed to Basketball Wives Star, Evelyn Lozada. The power couple tied the knot in July of 2012, but Lozada quickly filed for divorce a month later, citing their marriage was “irretrievably broken.” That's because Johnson headbutted Lozada following a lovers quarrel, and was subsequently arrested and released by the Miami Dolphins. Photos surfaced a year later from the bloody incident.
After a brief stint in jail for violating his parole, Johnson ended up back on his feet, playing a season in the CFL. Since the incident, the jersey-chasing Lozada has hit all the major sports league marriages, as she recently wed MLB star, Carl Crawford. TMZ even questioned her about Johnson in 2016, where she stated:
"I don't give a s***! It happened 4 years ago. It is what it is. I'm happy, everybody's moved on with their lives, right? Why be angry? I totally forgive. It's all good."
9 Brady Quinn and Alicia Sacramone
Bringing home a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and looking stunning doing it, Alicia Sacramone was one of the most popular athletes in America at the time. In 2009, the gymnast was spotted at several Cleveland Browns' games, and confirmed that she was dating quarterback, Brady Quinn. The couple had been seeing each other since 2007, concealing their love from the public eye. Eventually the two love birds tied the knot in 2014.
The reason we find Quinn and Sacramone's relationship odd, is that they both fell short of their potential in their respective sports. As a first-round pick out of Notre Dame, Quinn was suppose make waves in the league, but is now considered a draft bust! Sacramone on the other hand, faltered on the balance beam and floor routines in Beijing, taking the responsibility for Team USA's second-place finish to China. I'm sure they are a happy couple, but we have to imagine they both regret their glory days!
8 Charles and Jackie Tillman
We start off our list with "Peanut" Tillman, and his wife, Jackie. No, this family is not odd in the way that you may think, they are odd because they are a lovable, loyal family in an otherwise tumultuous NFL pool of relationships. Charles met Jackie back in 7th grade, and the happy couple now have several children together. They are the definition of "relationship goals!"
The couple engages in several utilitarian endeavors together, even taking on the responsibility of organizing 5K's at Soldier Field. Keeping things light is the Tillman's key to such a strong relationship, as Peanut once said in a 2013 interview:
"I’m the kind of husband who plays jokes all of the time. She could go to the bathroom and she’ll come out and I’ll have it pitch black in the house and I’m hidin’ somewhere."
Now, he's training to be an FBI-agent! I think we should all be envious of Charles and Jackie!
7 Alex Smith and Elizabeth Barry
We all know the stereotypical high school relationship between the quarterback and cheerleader, but this 90s movie romance isn't just restricted to teenagers! Former Oakland Raiders cheerleader, Elizabeth Barry, first went out with then-San Francisco quarterback, Alex Smith, during a St. Patrick's day festival, and the rest was history. The couple wed in 2009 while they both resided in the Bay Area. It's not everyday when the cross-town rival infiltrates enemy lines!
Like many of these couples, Smith and Barry are active in charities, participating in events for Hope House, and personally funding The Alex Smith Foundation, which helps finance college tuition to under-privileged students. Now, the family has settled down in Kansas City with their two boys, Hunter and Hayes. With Smith's future up in the air with the Chiefs, maybe they will be finding a new home soon!
6 Tony and October Gonzalez
2019 Hall of Fame candidate, Tony Gonzalez and his long-time partner, October, make our list of odd couples. While everything in the tabloids is positive about the couple, there is one small aspect of their relationship that is odd: they never tied the knot! The couple had a commitment ceremony (whatever that means) back in July of 2007, and consider themselves married, even though the legality is hazy. Maybe Gonzalez is weird about his money, and this gives him an excuse to jump ship of anything goes down. Still, marriage isn't for everyone.
We aren't really surprise by this revelation about Gonzalez though. At 6'5" 250 lbs., even though he was officially listed as a tight end, we all know that he was a receiver. Just officially commit to a position already Tony!
5 Nnamdi Asomugha and Kerry Washington
Not all retired NFL players thrive post-football, but Nnamdi Asomugha is a happy exception. The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback, and member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, has enjoyed a prominent career on-screen since hanging up his cleats. An overall standout guy, Asomugha has been critically acclaimed for his 2017 performance in Crown Heights.
So, who gets to be on the arm of the former NFLer on the red carpet? That would be fellow actress, Kerri Washington. What a power couple! On one side, you have an amazing, award winning actor, and on the other, there's Asomugha! The couple wed in 2013 and welcomed their first child together in a year later. Their second child was born in 2016, and the successful couple seems happy. Life in Hollywood can be tough, but these two have it all figured out!
4 Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen
It goes Jay-Z and Beyonce, then Tom and Gisele for the most popular power couples in the world. And as crazy as it is to say, Bündchen actually brings home more dough in the relationship! Coming off a Super Bowl loss and one-second-too-long kiss in his documentary, Tom vs. Time, Brady still has the joy of going home to his stunning Brazilian supermodel wife every night.
So, what's so odd about this power couple? Well, it's because it is the quintessential, stereotypical marriage that trumps all other stereotypes. Debonair quarterback weds foreign supermodel, and they all live happily ever after in their own wealthy bubble. You know what, I think I'm just jealous. Good for your Tom! No amount of Super Bowls rings will ever compare to your gorgeous, Victoria Secret model WAG!
3 Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari
"Smokin' Jay" and his smokin' wife, Kristin Cavallari, round out our top three odd couples. Cutler didn't take the traditional route in meeting The Hills star, as he contacted her publicist to fly Cavallari out to Chicago to meet him! Real classy Jay!
The blonde bombshell initially declined the invite, but ended up in the Windy City a year later, turning a chance encounter with the mediocre quarterback into an instant love connection. The two 'has-beens' began dating in 2010, and Cutler popped the question in the spring of 2011. That summer, the couple called off their engagement over some differences, but got back together in the winter of that year, tying the knot for good.
Jay and Kristin have been a staple on television shows and tabloid covers ever since. Even though their relationships seems solid, we can't help but think that marriage is a sham, with Cutler's nonchalant attitude towards everything Cavillari's well-known "reality show" persona. On the other hand, maybe they are meant to be together!
2 Russell Wilson and Ciara
After Seattle's dominance against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVII in February 2014, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson decided to call it quits with his then-wife, Ashton Meem. But after focusing on football and faith, the four-time Pro Bowler proceeded to "1,2 step" into Ciara's heart, as they began dating in 2015. The couple got married at a castle in England in 2016, and welcomed their first child, Sienna Princess Wilson, the following year.
Now, this odd romance between a risque hip-hop artist and born-again Christian quarterback wasn't without it's obstacles. Ciara's ex, rapper Future, berated the engaged couple on social media, since the Seattle gunslinger was playing the father figure in little Future's life. The beef has since been settled, but this odd power couple still holds one of the top spots on our list!
1 Tim Couch and Heather Kozar
Now, for the top odd NFL couple on our list, we have to make our way to Northeast Ohio with former Cleveland Browns quarterback, Tim Couch, and January 1998 Playmate of the Month, Heather Kozar. Couch wasn't Kozar's first NFL boy toy, as she had dated another crappy quarterback, Cade McNown, in the past.
The former number one overall pick definitely 'reached' by locking down his smokin' wife. That being said, don't you find it odd that a Couch, Cleveland's former quarterback, is married to women with a similar last name as another Brown's starting quarterback, Bernie Kosar. I know, there is no relation between the two, but hear me out. What if Couch played some crazy scenario in his head where he was actually a successful QB like Kosar? Alright, I'll take my tin-foil hat off now and stop pumping crazy conspiracies into your head.
That being said, we have concluded our list of NFL players with surprising wives. Each was odd in their own way, but do you think there should be any additions to the list?
