Oh boy, have the 49ers fallen on rough times in a hurry. In a span of a couple of months, the San Francisco 49ers lost their head coach Jim Harbaugh to the University of Michigan. Mike Iupati has signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Frank Gore is moving on to a new team. To top it all off, stud linebacker Patrick Willis is soon going to announce his retirement from football at the age of 30 and a run of seven Pro Bowls before he was injured in the middle of this past season. Justin Smith may also walk away from the game. To top it off, there are whispers of Colin Kaepernick being on the trading block after just signing a six-year, $126 million contract and two years removed from a Super Bowl appearance. All signs are pointing to a rebuild of sorts in San Fran.
Those are tough pills to swallow for any market, but particularly for a franchise as iconic of the 49ers. They already went through a dry spell at the turn of the 21st century, which all changed when Jim Harbaugh came to town. Now it appears things are starting all over.
