Ever since his college days at Texas A&M, Johnny Manziel has been a living media magnet. Everywhere he goes, everything he says and does, whatever he eats for breakfast, whoever he sleeps with, is posted on social media for all to see. I mean, literally everything. Manziel was more popular than three quarters of the NFL before he had his name called on draft day.
Ironically enough, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns plummeting franchise (and he asked for it, but we'll get to that later on). This gave the Browns far more media attention than normal, but it was rarely ever positive. Manziel has put far more effort into partying and goofing off than he has to bettering his NFL career. We saw that firsthand in his miserable first start in week 15 of 2014 (again, more on that later).
His antics have gone so far that the Browns want nothing to do with him and it's hard to believe any NFL team will take a shot on him if his charades continue. So far in his NFL career, he has proved to be nothing more than a distraction. His play is erratic (and that's putting it nicely) and he always seems to say the wrong things to the media and his coaches.
There are so many things he has done that he would love for people to forget (in such a short period of time). It's hard to knock it down to 15, but I tried. I'm sure many of you remember these boneheaded things that Manziel has become known for.
Read on, and enjoy the stupidity.
15 Getting Kicked Out of a Frat Party in College
Hey, we all know what athletes do in college. Most athletes spend the nights drinking and partying. It's no secret.
Johnny Manziel was right in that mold. Unlike most athletes, however, Johnny had a hard time keeping it private.
14 How Unbelievably Lost he Looked In His First NFL Start
Throughout his rookie season, fans were begging for Johnny Manziel to replace struggling veteran Brian Hoyer, but head coach Mike Pettine was extremely reluctant to throw his first round pick into the fire.
With the Browns season way over, Pettine finally decided to give in and start Manziel in week 15 at the division rival Cincinnati Bengals. We immediately realized why Pettine was so hesitant to hand Manziel the reigns.
With so many watching anxiously to see how he would fair, Manziel could not have looked more incompetent. I mean, rookies typically struggle right away, but this was a whole another level of bad. He simply didn't look ready, which is inexcusable that late in the season.
13 How "Professional" he Makes Himself Look on Instagram
Most athletes will post a lot of pics of themselves getting at it on the practice field or the weight room. Maybe a post victory locker room shot. Yes, there will be the occasional party photo for some, but typically, it showcases professionalism because most players realize how social media reflects on how the world views them. They realize you have to carry yourself differently in the public eye.
12 Telling the Browns to Draft Him
Johnny Manziel was a polarizing player to begin with. No one knew where he would go in the draft based on the way he acts off the field, his size, and the risks involved in taking a quarterback such as him. That's why it didn't come as much of a surprise that he remained in the green room for an extended period of time.
This prompted Manziel to text Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslem and try to persuade him to trade up for him. Here is a quote of the text that was reportedly sent to the Browns owner.
I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to be there. I want to wreck this league together.
The Browns used a top ten pick to select cornerback Justin Gilbert (who was also a major bust) and decided to listen to Manziel and trade up for the former Aggie. After making the trade, they pulled the trigger and everyone watched Manziel flash the money sign to the crowd.
11 The Constant Partying
Throughout this list, there are different situations that relate to Johnny Manziel partying like a rockstar, but it is getting so bad that I figured I might as well make it it's own thing.
10 Spending Part of His First Offseason with Gronk in Las Vegas
The offseason before rookie year is huge for any player, regardless of where they were drafted. It's a time to hit the weight room and work on reps as often as possible. Not a time to mess around and party your face off.
Apparently Johnny Manziel didn't get this memo.
Prior to starting his NFL campaign, Manziel was seen on social media partying it up in Las Vegas with Rob Gronkowski and a bunch of babes. Gronk is so good, he can basically do whatever he wants. Manziel was far from that category.
9 The Money Sign
Is there anything more douchey than when Johnny Manziel flashes the money sign? Even in college it was so freaking ridiculous, but that was something Manziel should have stopped doing in the NFL, at least until he was good.
8 Rolling a Dollar Bill in the Bathroom
One Instagram picture was posted that spotted Johnny Manziel rolling up a dollar bill in the bathroom a bunch of his buddies around him.
7 Reportedly Showing Up Drunk to Practice
Sure, this was never actually confirmed. I don't think you could have been 100 percent certain a player is drunk at practice unless the coaches are literally breathalyzing the players as they walk through the door.
6 The Money Phone
After Johnny Manziel was drafted, he let his new found money go to his head. Literally.
One night when Manziel was out at a night club with his friends, he just so happened to have a massive stack of money on him. In a drunken video posted on Instagram, Manziel held that Money to his head and was seen saying, "I can't hear you, I got to much money in my ear!"
5 Reportedly Seen Wearing Blonde Wig in Las Vegas
Over his college career at Texas A&M and his first two years in the NFL, we have heard some pretty ridiculous Johnny Manziel stories, but this one might just be the most unbelievable.
On the Sunday before the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Manziel was required to report to the facility for concussion protocol, even though there was no chance of him playing. He didn't show (shocker). Most would assume he had one too many the night before and overslept, but a report came out stating something far more obscure.
4 Manziel Throws Party with Teammates
Johnny Manziel got injured in his second NFL start, coming against the Carolina Panthers. He wasn't playing well at all leading up the injury, but hey, he was a rookie who was just getting his feet wet.
Apparently Manziel packed it in as soon as he went down. Prior to the last game, Johnny decided to throw a banger and invite a bunch of players on the team, including Josh Gordon.
3 Taking to Twitter to Let Out Emotions in College
Johnny Manziel should just stay off social media. Only bad things happen.
In the summer of 2013, prior to his final year with Texas A&M, Manziel took to Twitter to express some frustration. Not exactly the kind of place you want to be spewing some strong feelings. Maybe he was drunk (or probably).
Either way, here is what he decided to tweet out on June 6, 2013.
Bull**** like this is the reason I can't wait to leave college station.... whenever it may be
2 Missing Monday Night Spotlight Because He Partied
Johnny Manziel was set to hit the biggest regular season spotlight in all of football last season at home on Monday Night against the Baltimore Ravens. Sure, the game meant absolutely nothing, but for Manziel, this was a huge opportunity to shine in front of a national audience. A chance that doesn't come around often if you play for the Browns.
1 Domestic Violence Allegations
It's honestly amazing that this wasn't bigger news. Isn't that so typical of the NFL and the media to downplay what seemed like a serious domestic violence allegation (ala Greg Hardy)?
This past offseason Johnny Manziel added the icing on the cake to all of debauchery when 23-year-old Colleen Crowley accused Manziel of striking her several times.
The investigation is ongoing, but Manziel's track record does him no favors in allowing people to believe he is innocent in this instance. We've seen in the past that this will have little affect on whether or not he can play in the NFL, but it gives teams more reason to steer clear of him.
