All 27 NHL Captains: Who Are They Dating?

Star players on any NHL team have the spotlight on them, making fans want to know as much as they can about them. The captain of each team is looked at as the leader, and sometimes that leadership carries into how they carry themselves off the ice. Each player has their personal lives, and very little is mentioned throughout game broadcasts, but the question still remains: who does the captain of each NHL team go home to?

This season, there are only captains for 26 out of the current 31 NHL teams. Four of the five teams that do not have captain are in their first season of vacancy. Those four teams are the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, and the new expansion team in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights. The Toronto Maple Leafs, however, have been without a captain since Dion Phaneuf held the title in 2015-16.

We've heard the saying "behind every great man is an even better woman." Each captain in the NHL has a woman who is in their corner, supporting them through the good and the bad. It is always nice to know that our favourite captains have someone in their corner to celebrate with through the good times and lean on when they feel like their not playing as well as they could.

Having a great support system is important for anyone, no matter what line of work they're in. The list that begins below will display who is at the helm of each NHL captain's support system in alphabetical order, by team.

via hokej.pravda.sk

Zdeno Chara is currently the longest tenured captain of an NHL team, gaining the "C" leading into the 2006-07 season. Much like Ryan Getzlaf, Chara married his longtime girlfriend, Tatiana during the year of his first season as captain. They had been dating for ten years before getting married in his home country of Slovakia on July 14,2007.

During his time playing in Ottawa, Zdeno looked to his then-girlfriend for the support to give himself a path once he retires from hockey, obtaining a financial planning diploma from Ottawa's Algonquin College. Tatiana is a financial planner for TD Bank and her husband was impressed with that career choice. In 2015, Zdeno gained a real estate license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. When he does hang up his skates, thanks to the support of his wife, he has a career to continue his life with.

Zdeno and Tatiana have welcomed three children together. Their daughter, Elliz and twin boys, Zack and Ben.

25 Mark Giordano (Calgary Flames) - Lauren Giordano

via calgaryflamesfoundation.com

Many people in the Calgary, Alberta area know Mark Giordano's wife just as much as they know him. That is not just because she is married to the captain of the Calgary Flames, or a mother of two. It is because of the charity work that she puts in for the community.

Along with her husband, Lauren co-founded Team Giordano. With that, they have partnered with the Calgary Board of Education, helping to provide resources for four schools that are in the highest need. Together, the couple are also spokespeople for Habitat for Humanity.

Lauren has been a cornerstone for not only Mark's career, but for the Calgary community. With her children, Jack and Reese, Lauren and Mark are showing the world that they can earn recognition for their work off the ice. Mark earned the 2017 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award at the ESPY Awards. When arriving at the award show, he had mentioned that the one person who deserved to receive the award with them was Lauren.

24 Justin Faulk (Carolina Hurricanes) - Chole Lappen

via twitter.com

Shortly before the 2017-18 season began, the Carolina Hurricanes had announced that the team would have two co-captains. One of the two named is Justin Faulk. Though he lives in North Carolina, he found love in his home state of Minnesota over four years ago.

Lappen was still attending the University of Minnesota. After she graduated from school, Lappen opened a home and lifestyle shop with her mother, Dee Dee, in Excelsior, Minnesota. They have recently opened collaborated shop called pip & pal, exclusively selling products for children. On the shop's website, Lappen add blog posts about the latest trends in the health, home and beauty.

Long distance doesn't hinder the relationship between Faulk and Lappen, as they are still going strong. They both stay very busy, and while Lappen makes time to visit Faulk whenever she can, she has made a name for herself in her own right in Minnesota. Faulk has found a strong, independent woman who can help secure a great life for the two of them whenever he decides to hang up the skates.

23 Jordan Staal (Carolina Hurricanes) - Heather Staal

via georgejeffreyfoundation.com

Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins will never forget the day that Jordan Staal got traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, as it was the day he married his longtime girlfriend Heather. Many players of the Pittsburgh Penguins were in attendance and found out the news at the ceremony. Fast forward five years later, and he is named one of the co-captains of the Hurricanes, along with Justin Faulk.

Jordan and Heather had been dating for several years before they tied the knot on June 22, 2012. They had happily welcomed three girls since getting married. Their first daughter, Abigail was born on January 2, 2015 and their second daughter, Lilah was born on July 5, 2016. Their lives took a tragic turn when their daughter Hannah, born February 22, 2018, passed away two days after birth.

Through all of the ups and downs, Jordan and Heather have maintained a strong relationship and their family has appreciated the incredible amount of support they have received from fans everywhere.

22 Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks) - Lindsey Vecchione

via zimbio.com

It is no shock that a captain like Jonathan Toews would have his choice of girlfriends with the large female fan-base he has acquired. However, in 2013, he found the one woman he wanted in his corner, cheering him on above anyone else. That woman is model and Chicago native, Lindsey Vecchione.

Being in the age of social media, Vecchione had been at the brunt of scrutiny from female fans, but has seemed to rise above it. She is an avid sports fan and can be seen cheering on Toews at the United Center, as well as helping out with the Blackhawks WAG-endorsed events. Over the years, she has become a valuable member of the Blackhawks family and the fans have grown to accept her.

In fact, on Valentine's Day 2017, Toews and Vecchione made 8th in the Chicago Tribune's top 10 "sports twosomes who are near and dear to the hearts of fans of the city's teams."

21 Gabriel Landeskog (Colorado Avalanche) - Mel Shouldice

via pinterest.com

Gabriel Landeskog, captain of the Colordao Avalanche since October 2012, has found love with his longtime, live-in girlfriend, Mel Shouldice.

Before they found a loft apartment together just two blocks away from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Shouldice was living in Toronto, where she grew up. She went to Guelph University and obtained a degree in psychology. Landeskog has landed a woman who is not only beautiful, but one who has strong head on her shoulders.

Their relationship began in 2012, while Shouldice was still enrolled at the university. She would see her man when the Avs came to play games against either the Maple Leafs in Toronto or the Red Wings in Detroit. There was also times where she would make the trip to Avalanche home games in Denver, but her school schedule limited those until she moved across the border permanently.

The two have adopted a dog together named Zoey, making their Christmas cards the perfect photo of a happy, little family.

20 Nick Foligno (Columbus Blue Jackets) - Janelle Foligno

via nhl.com

Nick and Janelle Foligno have had their ups and downs documented, using them to advocate for causes that affect many not only in the United States, but across the globe.

Married in 2011, the Folignos first fought through Janelle's battle with an eating disorder, which with the support of her loving husband, she beat with pride in 2012. They decided to spread their love and gave birth to their first child, Milania on October 14th, 2013. Sadly, the baby girl was born with a congenital heart defect and there were many hospital visits and a surgery, all before the age of three.

In 2016, the couple wanted to give back to the two hospitals that helped save their daughters life. They delivered a donation of $500,000 to both the Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, where Milania was first diagnosed, and Boston's Children's Hospital, where the surgery that saved her life was performed.

The couple also have a son, Landon, and are living happily in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

19 Jamie Benn (Dallas Stars) - Katie Hoaldridge

via Pinterest.com

Jamie Benn quickly became one of, if not the top hockey star in Dallas. He may not have a Stanley Cup ring, but he has a gold medal that he won playing for Canada at the Winter Olympic Games.

His girlfriend, Katie Hoaldridge, met Benn while she was attending the University of Texas in Austin. She received a degree in communications, but after completing an internship at Sony and Warner Bros., she decided to switch paths in life and became a model.

Currently living in Manhattan, New York, Hoaldridge is making quite the name for herself in the modeling world and has all of Benn's support. They may live miles apart, but they always make time to see each other, whether it be when Benn is on the road, or Hoaldridge making the trip down to Dallas.

It seems as though Benn has scored both on and off the ice, with a woman who is his biggest supporter, but is still independent enough to not date him for his money.

18 Henrik Zetterberg (Detroit Red Wings) - Emma Zetterberg

via pinterest.com

Being a star both on and off the ice is nothing new to either Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg or his wife Emma.

They met in their home country of Sweden. Emma, a model and TV host, and Henrik got engaged in 2008. Their wedding on July 23, 2010 showed a play on a Swedish tradition that went all the way back to the 19th century. The lovely couple, along with all of their guests, were dressed in black and white Amish/Dread Pirate Roberts jumpsuits. The wedding took place in Emma's hometown of Molle, located just off the Baltic Sea, where several wedding guests took the tradition to the full extent, jumping in while wearing their striped outfits. Pictures of the festivities, like the one above, circled the internet in the days following the celebration.

The couple brought more joy into their marriage when they welcomed their son Love in 2015. This naturally good-looking couple has extending their beauty to their son, who will no doubt break many hearts in the future.

17 Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers) - Lauren Kyle

via twitter.com

The youngest entry on this list, Connor McDavid is also the youngest captain in NHL history, becoming the new face of the Edmonton Oilers franchise. As we had seen at the 2017 NHL Awards in Las Vegas, he's had a lovely woman in his corner for almost two years now. His girlfriend is Toronto, Ontario native, Lauren Kyle.

Much like her boyfriend, Kyle is a very private person. We do know that she is an avid sports fan and played volleyball while attending college at Ryerson University. She loves to travel and as you could see on her social media accounts, she has been to many hot travel destinations such as Las Vegas, New York, and California.

Both Kyle and McDavid were scrutinized in October 2017 after pictures of their Halloween costumes at an Oilers party emerged online. They went dressed as President Donald Trump and First Lady Milania. Though they were costumes and nothing was mentioned about their political views, both of them being Canadian, many were offended by their choice of attire.

16 Derek MacKenzie (Florida Panthers) - Sarah MacKenzie

via pinterest.com

Out of all of the captains on this list, Derek MacKenzie is probably the least known player of the bunch. He's never been an All-Star, has no award for his play on the ice, and hasn't had a 30-point season since his start in the NHL over a decade ago.

MacKenzie makes a name for himself off the ice, working with many charities. He's not alone in the work, with his lovely wife Sarah working alongside him. As a native of Sudbury, Ontario, MacKenzie has partnered with the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer. The partnership has spawned an annual golf tournament to help raise money and awareness.

MacKenzie's wife has also helped bring awareness to causes to the Florida Panthers organization. She has helped forge a partnership between the hockey club and a great initiative started by young boy's Bar Mitzvah dream, Sole Relief. This non-for-profit organization collects sneakers that children have grown out of and sends them across the globe for underprivileged children.

In both instances, the MacKenzies have brought their children, Reese and Greyson, to help, even if it's just by making an appearance.

15 Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles Kings) - Ines Kopitar

via youtube.com

Anze Kopitar is not only the first Slovenian captain in the NHL, he is the first player in the league from his come country. The year before he was drafted to the Los Angeles Kings, Kopitar met the woman who would eventually become his wife and mother to his children. Who was that woman? Ines Dominic.

They met while Koptiar was playing for the 2005 World Championships and became inseparable right away. A huge chunk of the first years of their relationship was spent online, with them living on two separate sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The two tied the knot in July of 2013.

In addition to the cute dog pictured in the photo above, the happy couple became parents for the first time on March 14, 2015, with the birth of their baby girl, Neza. Their son Jakob was born on October 5, 2016. They are the image of a perfect Slovenian family living the dream in sunny California.

14 Mikko Koivu (Minnesota Wild) - Helena Koivu

via startribune.com

As the longest tenured player for the Minnesota Wild, Mikko Koivu had to work harder off the ice to score as he ever did once he laced up with skates.

After winning the gold medal at the 2011 World Championships, Koivu held an event in Helsinki, Finland. When he checked into his hotel with his teammates, his eye caught the front desk attendant. She didn't know who he was, and it intrigued him, making him try for weeks to get her to go on a date with him.

A month had passed before the woman Koivu couldn't get out of his head, Helena, had agreed to go on a date. It was as if they knew each other forever and their relationship took off. When the lockout during the 2012-13 finally ended, Helena moved to Minnesota with her love.

They had welcomed their daughter, Sofie, just before the 2013-14 season and tied the knot during the next off-season. Their second child, Kasper, was born on May 18, 2015.

13 Max Pacioretty (Montreal Canadiens) - Katia Pacioretty

via zimbio.com

The 29th captain in Montreal Canadiens history, Max Pacioretty has so much to be thankful for since coming back from the "Chara incident." The main reason for that is his wife, Katia, and the support and love she has brought into his life.

Katia is a retired tennis player, moving to Florida at 13 to train with a former tennis instructor of the Williams sisters. This allowed her to be able to fluently speak English. Katia was considered a great prospect in the tennis world, but refrained from major tournaments since 2012. She is the younger sister of former NHL player Maxim Afinogenov.

After meeting and falling in love with the Canadiens captain, the two tied the knot in 2011, exactly one week apart from Katia's brother. They welcomed their first son, Lorenzo in December 2013. Their second son, Max Jr., was born in June 2015 and last July, they welcomed their third son, James.

12 Roman Josi (Nashville Predators) - Ellie Ottaway

via block.ch

Living in Nashville, Predators captain Roman Josi has found a woman to share his life with that embraces everything about the city he represents.

Ellie Ottaway is a model from Michigan who is passionate about music. She spends as much time as she can volunteering for musical programs, even trying to teach Josi how to play "Heart and Soul" on the piano, which can be seen on her Instagram.

Ottaway has a Bachelor's Degree in Music Business from Belmont University. While in the city of Nashville, she has been a volunteer for "Hands on Nashville" and "St. Jude's Country Music Nashville Marathon."

Ottaway and Josi have only been together since 2015, but on Christmas Day 2017, everything changed. As it was seen on Ottaway's Instagram account, Josi used a puppy to help propose to the love of his life.

With a wonderful future ahead of them, this couple has Nashville at their fingertips and with the Predators clinching a spot in the 2018 playoffs, they just have a little bit more to celebrate.

11 Andy Greene (New Jersey Devils) - Rachel Greene

via twitter.com

Andy and Rachel met in 2004 while attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Andy was a star player on the school's hockey team and caught the eye of Rachel. There's not much information out there about Rachel, other than what her father wrote about their relationship back in 2007.

However, we do know that they are still happily together and are parents to two young boys. Their first son, Colton was born just before the 2015-16 season began.  Maddox, the couple's second son was born on October 28, 2017.

The picture above is from when the birth of Maddox was announced. The captain had missed one game to assist his wife at the hospital. This couple has many things to be thankful for and hopefully, the good times keep coming.

10 John Tavares (New York Islanders) - Aryne Fuller

via lasvegassun.com

New York Islanders captain hit the jackpot when it comes to significant others. Not only is Aryne Fuller beautiful, but what she chose to take in school is a huge benefit to Tavares.

Fuller has a Bachelor's of Science in kinesiology from McMaster University. From there, she went on to obtain her Master's in rehabilitation therapy and physiotherapy at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Having this background helped Tavares avoid knee surgery following his injury during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

We have all seen how dedicated Tavares is to the game of hockey. Some jokingly say that he has metaphorically been married to the game for many years now. This past August, however, Tavares banked on another love in his life.

After spending some time in the 2017 off-season rehabbing his hamstring injury, Tavares traveled through California with Fuller and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. She gladly said yes, and the couple started off the 2017-18 season more in love than ever.

9 Erik Karlsson (Ottawa Senators) - Melinda Karlsson

via people.com

Though this couple has recently gone through a terrible tragedy, Senators captain Erik Karlsson and wife Melinda have received great support from fans and loved ones through every avenue of social media.

Melinda received a degree in communications from Carleton University and is an active business consultant in Ottawa. The two got engaged in November 2016 in the courtyard of Ottawa's All Saints Anglican Church, when Erik used pizza as a prop for the proposal.

The tied the knot in the summer of 2017 and shortly after Melinda began a charity called "You Can't Dim My Light," which brings awareness to cyber bullying. The announcement about the charity came from a blog written by Nicholle Anderson, wife of Senators goaltender, Craig Anderson.

In Novermber 2017, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together. Just over a month later, it was revealed that the baby would be a boy. Tragedy struck the couple three months later as on March 20, 2018, it became known that the baby was still born. Melinda may be doing well health-wise, it is obviously a terrible thing to go through for anyone.  Well wishes and support is sent to the couple constantly from fans through this rough time.

8 Claude Giroux (Philadelphia Flyers) - Ryanne Breton

via twitter.com

Claude Giroux has always had one dream: to win the Stanley Cup. This summer, he will achieve another dream that many didn't think he had, marrying the love of his life, Ryanne Breton.

Not much is known about Breton expect she's been dating Giroux for almost six years. There has been many posts, much like there is with any woman who is seen dating a professional athlete, spouting negative comments about the way Breton carries herself. However, she has been a major part of the Flyers WAGs and holds the hockey club and its fans close in her heart.

Pictures and tweets on Breton's Instagram and Twitter show how much she loves her life with Giroux and can't wait for the day she walks down the aisle to become his wife. I'm sure there will be many pictures that show up surrounding the big day that a lot of us can't wait for.

7 Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) - Kathy Leutner

via tumblr.com

Sidney Crosby has been the face of the NHL for years. When it comes to when he gets off the ice, Crosby is a pretty private person. This would be why there hasn't been much information about his relationship with girlfriend Kathy Leutner.

The pair have been together for almost ten years. Leutner is a well-known supermodel, and the main reason why her relationship with Crosby is not all over the internet is because much like her boyfriend, she also like to keep her personal life private. Neither Crosby nor Leutner have social media accounts of any kind.

It crazy in this day and age to see two people who have such high-profiled careers have such a private relationship, but it seems to be working so well for these two. There has been rumors floating around surrounding the subject of marriage. It would not be very surprising to see Leutner, multi-time cover girl for Fitness magazine, and Crosby, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, tie the knot in the near future. Judging by the picture above, she has already seeming been accepted by Crosby's family.

6 Alex Pietrangelo (St. Louis Blues) - Jayne Pietrangelo

via stylemepretty.com

Alex Pietrangelo was named the captain of the St. Louis Blues ahead of the 2016-17 season. On July 2, 2016, just over one month before the announcement of his captaincy, Pietrangelo married his longtime girlfriend Jayne.

Jayne is the perfect cheerleader for her husband. She was an NFL cheerleader for the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011. She did not cheer at any game in the 2012-13 season, but she was featured in the annual calendar and on the cover.

Alex is no stranger to lending a hand to many cancer research charities, as he has lost or watched the suffering of, many close to him. Jayne shares this cause with her husband, having close ties with the Komen Race for the Cure, after losing her grandmother to breast cancer.

There's not much known about the relationship these two have. They own a home in King City, Ontario and always find time to enjoy the small things in life to try and hold onto their youth as long as they can. Kudos to them.

5 Joe Pavelski (San Jose Sharks) - Sarah Pavelski

via youtube.com

Going from a seventh-round draft pick to becoming captain of the San Jose Sharks is almost like a Cinderella story for Joe Pavelski. Helping him through his entire NHL career has been his wife, Sarah.

Joe and Sarah met when Joe was playing for the Waterloo Black Hawks in Waterloo, Iowa. Joe told a reporter while playing there that he considered the city his second home because of the relationships he had made there. One of the main ones was, of course, Sarah.

Sarah attended the University of Iowa when Joe began his career in the NHL and the two were married in July of 2008. She currently is a member of the "Good Vibe Tribe," a team that the WAGs of the San Jose Sharks have assembled, ensuring that they only spread good vibes after each game, whether it is a win or a loss.

The couple welcomed their first child, Nathan Joseph, on October 26, 2010. He was seen during the 2016 NHL All-Star Skills Competition, accompanying his dad, fellow Shark Brent Burns and his son, during the Breakaway Challenge.

4 Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay Lightning) - Sandra Stamkos

via tumblr.com

High school sweethearts. That is the best way to describe the relationship of Tampa Bay Lightening captain Steven Stamkos and wife Sandra.

The two met while attending St. Brother Andre Catholic School in Markham, Ontario, in 2008. After eight years of dating, Steven finally proposed to Sandra. The proposal took place the day after Steven helped Team Canada win the World Cup of Hockey in their hometown of Toronto.

The two would get married in Toronto on June 30,2017. There isn't much known about Sandra, other than each year when each player on the Lightening make a Christmas ornament, Steven always signed Sandra's name with his.

Their relationship has lasted just about a decade so far, and it seems that these two are just beginning the next chapter of their lives together. Though we may not see much evidence of it on the internet, it is obvious in the pictures we do see, just how in love these two truly are.

3 Henrik Sedin (Vancouver Canucks) - Johanna Sedin

via pinterest.com

Henrik Sedin, the captain of the Vancouver Canucks, has always had his twin brother, Daniel,  by his side throughout his entire NHL career. There is someone else who has stood by Sedin's side for the last decade, his wife Johanna.

After dating for several years, Henrik and Johanna tied the knot in 2007.  During the  summer of 2006, the happy couple welcomed their first child, a son named Valter. Their second son, Harry was born in 2010.

Now having a family of their own, Henrik and Johanna, along with Henrik's twin Daniel and his wife, Marinette, formed the Sedin Foundation. The foundation was created to focus on family wellness throughout the province of British Columbia, working with social service agencies and schools to help find unique and creative ways to make a difference for not only families, but children as well. The foundation was formed in 2014 and still holds annual events throughout the Vancouver-area.

2 Alex Ovechkin (Washington Capitals) - Anastasia Ovechkin

via tumblr.com

Alex Ovechkin got married one summer, but waited until the following summer to hold a big celebration for the nuptials. We always knew that the "Great 8" was a little quirky, but when you have a beautiful wife like Russian model Anastasia Shubskaya, you can have as many parties to show your love as you want.

The Russian beauty is the daughter of actress Vera Glagolev. Though she is primarily a model, she finished a 4-week acting program at the New York Film Academy. Back home in Russia, she attended the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, graduating in 2016. Since then, she had been seen being a part of some of her mother's projects.

Anastasia married her sweetheart in the summer on August 28, 2016, at the same church where her parents had married. The celebration with friends and family was postponed due the World Cup of Hockey that made a return in September 2016, so they waited until the following year to display their love to those who supported their relationship, which if going back to their first dance, began when he was 23 and she was just 14.

1 Blake Wheeler (Winnipeg Jets) - Sam Wheeler

via tumblr.com

Blake Wheeler has lead the Winnipeg Jets to the best season they have had in many years. When he leaves the arena after home games, his house is full of support. At the helm of that support is his wife Sam.

Blake met his wife while playing for the Boston Bruins during the opening years of his NHL career. Sam was attending Boston University, majoring in international relations. When Blake was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers, Sam was devastated to leave her hometown, but knew that she would have the love of her life by her side.

Sam had to make one more move, from Atlanta to Winnipeg, where the couple has stayed for the last seven years. In October of 2012, the Wheelers welcomed their first son, Louie. With the birth happening during the season of the partial lockout, Blake stayed home with Sam until after the birth to go play in Europe. The couple have also welcomed a daughter, Leni, and during the summer of 2017, their second son was born.  There is no shortage of love in the Wheeler house.
