So, for much of this past NHL season people were talking about how Buffalo and Arizona were tanking in order to get the 1st pick in the 2015 Draft (or the Connor McDavid Sweepstakes as it is also know this year). Not that their fans cared though - as was evident by the cheering Buffalo Sabres fans at a home game against Arizona when the Coyotes scored the winning goal.
But, unfortunately for both Arizona and Buffalo they forgot that the Edmonton Oilers were also going to be part of the draft lottery. And if history has taught us anything, it is that if the Oilers have a chance at the number one spot, they will get the number one spot. And they did, even though they only had a %11.5 chance!
You probably know these facts, but they bear repeating because of how unbelievable it is: Since 2010 - and including the upcoming draft, the Edmonton Oilers have had the overall number one pick 4 out of 6 years (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015)! Even the Cleveland Cavaliers haven't been that lucky (2011 - from the LA Clippers, 2013, 2014).
