A month ago, the Ottawa Senators were all but out of the NHL playoff race. Then undrafted goalie Andrew Hammond came in to replace injured starting goaltenders Robin Lehner amd Craig Anderson, and the numbers have been remarkable.

in 11 starts, he has won 10 games and by giving up 2 or fewer goals in all of them he has done what no goaltender has done in the NHL in 76 years!! Along with success generally comes a nickname and Andrew Hammond has become Andrew “Hamburglar” Hammond.

I gotta say that’s a pretty good nickname! And obviously it was just a matter of time before fans started throwing hamburgers at him and that time came after yesterday’s 2-1 shootout victory over the Philadelphia flyers. Hammond skated over, scooped it up, held it up in the air and then flipped it to a fan as he headed to the locker room.

Yesterday it was just one hamburger. But I have a feeling that a trend is starting here and -like octopuses at a Red Wings Playoff game and boxes of Kraft Dinner at a Barenaked Ladies concert – there are going to be a lot more burgers flying onto the Canadian Tire Centre ice in the future.
