JBL was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2020, but his induction took place in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. JBL isn't a technical in-ring performer by any stretch of the imagination, but he became a big deal when he was rechristened as John "Bradshaw" Layfield in 2004. JBL initially retired in 2006, and he became a commentator on SmackDown, but he returned to in-ring competition in late 2007.

JBL wrestled full-time until 2009, and he engaged in some physical battles during his time in the squared circle. He is one of the greatest heels of all time as fans detested him, and they were pleased to see his comeuppance. JBL's final set of matches for WWE saw him compete in a variety of matches, and some title matches with contrasting results.

10 Royal Rumble Match - Royal Rumble 2014

JBL was happily retired but he made a cameo in the 2014 Royal Rumble match. Layfield emerged from the commentary table, and he was the 24th entrant in the Rumble. It was the first time that JBL had competed in a Royal Rumble match in this persona.

Layfield didn't have his ring gear on, and he asked his broadcast colleague Michael Cole to grab his suit jacket. Roman Reigns who was a man on a mission didn't care for sentiments, and he threw JBL over the top rope, en route to clinching the record of eliminating the most competitors in a single Rumble.

The Intercontinental Championship match at WrestleMania 25 was the first one to feature on WrestleMania in seven years. JBL defended the Intercontinental Title against Rey Mysterio, and since WrestleMania took place in Texas, in true JBL fashion, he berated his native Texans in the crowd.

Surprisingly, this was a short contest with JBL kicking Mysterio in the face. That's as good as it got for JBL as Mysterio connected with the 619, and he followed it up with the Frog Splash to seal the deal and become the new Intercontinental Champion. JBL's retirement match only lasted 21 seconds, and he grabbed a microphone and shouted "I Quit" afterward.

8 JBL & Vladimir Kozlov Vs. Shawn Michaels & The Undertaker - Raw (3/16/09)

On the March 16, 2009, edition of Raw, JBL and Vladimir Kozlov collided against Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, who were opponents at WrestleMania 25. The Deadman and HBK got off to a positive start, and HBK connected with his favorite elbow drop from the top rope onto JBL.

Michaels attempted the Sweet Chin Music, but Kozlov distracted Michaels which allowed JBL to boot HBK in the face. Kozlov and JBL had offense, but it wasn't enough. Undertaker was going to finish off JBL with a quick sequence of moves, but Michaels tagged himself in, and he connected JBL with the Sweet Chin Music for the win.

7 JBL Vs. CM Punk - Raw (3/9/09)

The Intercontinental Championship had eluded JBL but he had the chance to change that on the March 9, 2009, episode of Raw against CM Punk. JBL wore Punk down, and he wore him down in the back with some stiff elbows. Moreover, Punk halted JBL's momentum with some kicks and his trademark springboard elbow knocked him down.

This was an average match, and the Straight Edge Savior was looking to see off JBL with the GTS. However, JBL raked Punk's eyes, and he captured the Intercontinental Championship with a devastating Clothesline From Hell.

6 JBL Vs. Rey Mysterio - Raw (3/30/09)

The March 30, 2009 edition of Raw was JBL's final match on the red brand. He collided with Rey Mysterio in a non-title match, days before their upcoming WrestleMania 25 encounter. JBL overpowered Mysterio with ease, and he took control of proceedings but Mysterio managed to weather the storm and bounced back with his speed.

Mysterio attempted the 619 but JBL moved out of the way. Ultimately, the third time was a charm as Mysterio with the connected 619, and he finished off JBL with a splash to pick up the win.

5 JBL Vs. The Undertaker - SmackDown (3/20/09)

JBL was a member of Raw, but he made a name for himself on SmackDown as he was the longest-reigning WWE Champion in the history of SmackDown until AJ Styles broke his record in 2018. JBL competed against The Undertaker on the 500th episode of SmackDown. As expected, it was a physical encounter between the pair.

The battle spilled onto the outside, and Undertaker attempted to boot JBL in his face, but he missed and was hung up on the barricade. JBL managed to fight back, and he applied the Figure Four Leglock. With two hard-hitters going at it, it wasn't going to be a technical masterclass. JBL connected with the Clothesline From Hell but Undertaker kicked out, and the Phenom applied with Hell's Gate out of nowhere for the win.

4 JBL Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Randy Orton Vs. Chris Jericho - Raw (12/29/08)

There was a fatal-4-way elimination match on the December 29, 2008 edition of Raw with the winner facing JBL for the World Heavyweight Championship at the 2009 Royal Rumble. JBL had a decent outing here, and Jericho nailed him with the Codebreaker. Since Shawn Michaels was his servant, he saved JBL and he blind-tagged him and eliminated Jericho with Sweet Chin Music.

JBL took the fight to Orton, and it felt like a handicap match with Michaels and JBL working as a cohesive unit. HBK eliminated Orton, but Michaels was forced to let JBL hit him with the Clothesline From Hell, and he went on to face Cena at the Rumble.

JBL and Shawn Michaels were on the opposing side of the ring with the winner going on to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25. HBK set the tone to his liking until JBL got a stranglehold of proceedings. There was a nasty collision with HBK ramming JBL's head into the ring post, but JBL's head bounced back, and he connected with Michaels' head.

HBK attempted the Sweet Chin Music, but JBL countered it with a Clothesline From Hell attempt which he missed. JBL went for the Clothesline From Hell again, but it was to no avail with Michaels executing the Sweet Chin Music for the all-important win.

No Way Out 2009 was a huge night in Shawn Michaels' career as he faced off with JBL in an All or Nothing match. If Michaels prevailed, he would no longer be JBL's servant. Chants of '"HBK" reverberated around the arena, but JBL attempted to block out the noise as he wore Michaels down with some heavy blows to the chest.

Michaels' wife Rebecca was in the crowd, and she had a concerned look on her face. JBL hit Michaels with the Clothesline From Hell, but he kicked out. JBL connected with another one. However, Rebecca slapped JBL in the face, Michaels tuned up the band, and he connected with Sweet Chin Music to prevail in a decent match between the duo.

1 JBL Vs. John Cena - Royal Rumble 2009

JBL and John Cena are no strangers to each other, and they collided in an excellent World Heavyweight Championship match at the 2009 Royal Rumble. Shawn Michaels was in JBL's corner, and the match went back and forth.

The Wrestling God attempted the Clothesline From Hell but Cena applied the STF. HBK distracted Cena which gave JBL time to escape. The referee was knocked down, and Michaels hit both men with Sweet Chin Music. Michaels put JBL's arm across Cena's body, and he walked out. Ultimately, Big Match John kicked out, and he connected with the AA to retain the World Heavyweight Championship in a hard-fought battle.
