Taking place during COVID-19, this match was announced as an Empty Arena contest. It was the first time Jon Moxley was defending his world championship, but it just didn't click well. Everyone knew that Moxley was going to retain the title, and the MMA style of the match didn't help much. All in all, it was a decent match that saw The Death Rider retain his title.

The finish of the match was pretty disturbing when the referee had to stop the match after Kingston's face started turning red due to Moxley not letting go of his submission move.

But, Jon Moxley is one man who is not afraid of anything, and he always looked the favorite in the match despite the size difference. Fans had already seen this matchup at the Wrestle Kingdom 13 in Tokyo Dome and had high hopes going into the contest. Fortunately, it stood to the expectations and gave a perfect finish to the anniversary episode of Dynamite.

It was a wonderful match and it saw the world title changing hands for the first time.

6 Kenny Omega Vs. Jon Moxley (AEW Revolution 2021)

This match is probably the best AEW World Championship match, but only until its climax. Both Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley tore the house down in a barbed-wire explosion deathmatch. They shared countless strikes and blows, shed blood and whatnot, all while the ring was set to explode after 30 minutes.

Omega stood tall with some external help and left the ring leaving Moxley alone. Eddie Kingston came running in to protect his friend from the explosion. It was such a powerful and emotional moment, but the explosion was nowhere near what fans thought it would be. A few sparkles, and that's it. It felt like it was a pyro for the entrance of a superstar, and affected the overall brilliant match put on by Omega and Moxley.

5 Jon Moxley Vs. MJF (AEW All Out 2020)

MJF is so good at the mic that fans tend to forget he is great inside the ring as well. MJF and Jon Moxley were two superstars who were both never pinned or submitted in AEW before this match and one's streak was about to come to an end. The buildup to this match was pure gold where MJF thought he fooled Moxley only to get tricked by the champion.

The match, too, was fantastic. Both superstars had blood on their faces and fans couldn't get their eyes away in this 24-minute brawling classic. Eventually, Moxley retained after cleverly using a Paradigm Shift, a move that was banned in the match.

4 Jon Moxley Vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi (AEWxNJPW: Forbidden Door)

Technically, this match was for the interim championship, but the winner was awarded the title belt and is the AEW World Champion for an indefinite period. The match took place at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door and ended the night on a high note. It was a pretty physical contest where Moxley's whole face was covered in blood. The Death Rider eventually stood tall against The Ace in this 'three-year in the making' contest.

This was the last successful title defense of Moxley's first title reign, and it was a great match by any standards. Kingston got a rematch against Moxley citing that he never tapped out in their original bout. The two collided in an "I Quit" match. Moxley and Kingston bloodied each other with several strikes. Two of the best brawlers in the world proved themselves in this outstanding bout and Moxley came out of the ring as the champion.

He executed a perfect One-Winged Angel on Jon Moxley to begin his iconic title run which lasted almost the entire 2021.
