Jon Moxley became the first-ever three-time AEW World Champion when he defeated his Blackpool Combat Club teammate Bryan Danielson in the Grand Slam Tournament of Champions final at AEW Dynamite Grand Slam. It all went down at New York City's historic Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday, September 21. As Casino Ladder-Match winner MJF looked on from the stands, Mox and Danielson went one-on-one for the second time in their AEW careers in the main event with the vacant AEW World Championship on the line. It was Mox who walked away with the gold after forcing Danielson to pass out in a rear naked chokehold.

After the bell, Blackpool Combat Club leader William Regal entered the ring to congratulate his two proteges, although Danielson seemed to be unaware of the fact that he had passed out.

Moxley defeated Sammy Guevara in the opening match of last week's Dynamite to reach the tournament finals, while Danielson beat Guevara's mentor Chris Jericho in a thrilling main event, avenging his All Out loss in the process.

As you might recall, Moxley lost the title to CM Punk in the main event of AEW's All Out pay-per-view on September 4. During a post-show press conference, the new champ lost his cool and took some not-so-subtle verbal jabs at AEW EVPs Nick and Matt Jackson, who accosted Punk soon after. A brawl broke out, which resulted in several suspensions.

Punk -- who sustained a bicep injury during his match with Moxley -- was forced to vacate the AEW Championship, and the Grand Slam Tournament of Champions was announced on that week's edition of Dynamite.
