AEW's Kenny Omega was asked about Cody's departure from AEW and didn't hold back during an interview with the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Saying Cody was the one who made it 'AEW vs WWE' and that his vision for AEW was/is different than most everyone else in the company, Omega seemed to be disappointed in Cody's exit but also hinted that Rhodes didn't exactly fit in with the promotion's direction.

There have been reports about what went on behind the scenes in AEW and what might have led to Cody -- an AEW original and EVP -- deciding that the company he helped build was no longer the best place for him to work. It was even more surprising that he wasn't just leaving AEW but heading to WWE, a company he seemed to often take aim at in segments on AEW programming. Omega seemed to agree that it feels odd for Cody to be heading to a company he made out to be the enemy.

According to a transcript from Twitter account @WrestlePurists, they transcribed some of Omega's comments from the interview. Among the things Omega said, the former AEW Champion seemed to spoil a surprise debut at Elimination Chamber. Omega noted, "I heard he's (Cody Rhodes) on a flight to Saudi Arabia, if that makes him happy, that makes him happy." He added, he thinks it's ironic Cody has decided to take up with "the enemy" that Rhodes kind of invented in his own head. Omega explained, "When this thing (AEW) first started, the most passionate person of our revolution, the most passionate person of creating the 'us vs. them' mentality was Cody. It was strange for him to just choose to up and walk away."

Omega said he and The Young Bucks never wanted to go to war with Vince and WWE, but give fans an option and build another option to tell their wrestling stories and style of wrestling. Even though The Bucks have taken repeated subtle shots at WWE, Omega said, "Again, the Bucks and I, we weren't in this for the war. All the guys and gals in WWE doing their thing, always wishing for the best for those guys."

Omega Called AEW Tony Khan's Baby

Reports that Cody leaving AEW had a lot to do with losing power to book creative seemed to also be confirmed by Omega who said, "AEW is very much Tony (Khan)’s thing and baby. We're there to support it in any way that we can. It's very possible that this current version of AEW wasn't a good fit for Cody."
