Friday's episode of SmackDown featured the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Taking what might be a big step in his career, Madcap Moss ended up winning the 20-Man contest and potentially elevated his status in WWE beyond being just Happy Corbin's sidekick.

The match featured a variety of mid-card WWE stars. Among the late entrants were Dolph Ziggler (NXT Champion) and Robert Roode, but the favorite was probably Finn Balor who was in the match as the United States Champion and didn't have a match during this weekend's WrestleMania. Most fans likely assumed Balor would win, and he did make it all the way to the final two, but Moss ended up getting the victory and celebrated with the trophy, and then told a terrible joke to hammer home the fact he was one of WWE's most annoying heels.

This was hardly a star-studded battle royal, and the bout felt like it was a chance to elevate Moss to another level. There wasn't much in the way of a storyline and even the competitors who had a history with each other hardly acknowledged they had an unsettled beef. The entire bout was a setup to the close of the match where Moss took a small window to eliminate both Roode and Ziggler at the same time, then throw out Balor to close out the match.

Big Growth Moment For Madcap Moss?

The question now will be whether WWE sees this as a catapult for a character they see big things in. If so, whether they change up his gimmick or keep it the same will be interesting to watch. These battle royals don't always equate to a launching pad for the winner, but a heel like Moss can really sell the idea that he won the Battle Royal and beat 19 other men to do so. This might even set up a long-term storyline between him and Corbin where Corbin doesn't appreciate the kind of competitor Moss actually is.
