Few figures are more divisive in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu than Eddie Bravo. His feud with Royler Gracie is the stuff of grappling legend and has made its way into MMA folklore. While Bravo’s submission grappling record is shorter than his technical brilliance deserves, his skill on the mat never went unnoticed. Although he no longer competes, he committed to developing an alternative approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu.

A no-gi system incorporating lockdown variations of the half-guard position, a heavy emphasis on the rubber-guard, and an overall direction thought by some to be better designed for MMA’s use of strikes, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu has gained popularity among countless different MMA fighters.

Former MMA fighter Dan Hardy was one of the most entertaining action fighters in UFC history. Mainly a striker during his tenure with the UFC, he did, however, dabble in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In fact, for Hardy's failed UFC 111 title bid against Georges St-Pierre, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu coach Alder Hampel cornered him as his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach for the bout. While Hardy ultimately failed, his grit in refusing to submit to GSP's fully extended armbar and locked in kimura became legendary.

Better known for his outspoken attitude than his MMA accomplishments, Matt Mitrione is a 13-9 fighter who has fought for North America's premier MMA promotions; the UFC and Bellator. A career heavyweight with most of his wins coming by way of knockout and none by submission, Mitrione took the time to improve his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game by training with Eddie Bravo.

At 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, he learned about the tactical benefits of the twister side control variant over the ordinary side control position on the ground.

While her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training was predominantly at Dynamix MMA, the Gracie Academy, and the Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy, she did, occasionally, train with Eddie Bravo at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, appearing in a video wherein Bravo was teaching armbar set-ups from the guard.

Former UFC standout, Alan Jouban, was a fighter who never quite reached the heights dreamed of by most MMA fighters. UFC gold forever eluded him, but what cannot be taken away from him was how wildly entertaining he was.

Jouban was a four-time recipient of Fight of the Night honors, and despite the absence of any submission wins on his record, he was also a 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu representive with Eddie Bravo cornering him as his BJJ coach.

5 Ben Saunders

A black belt in both 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu and traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Ben Saunders is an MMA veteran most famous for multiple stints with the UFC. His two-time run with the promotion, however, left a lot to be desired.

Still, Saunders had something to celebrate as in 2020, he was promoted to a 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu black belt by Eddie Bravo. Thus, while his MMA career experienced a downswing, his BJJ journey proved far kinder.

A problematic figure, Gerald Strebendt is a onetime UFC fighter, lasting all of 2 minutes and 45 seconds before being at the receiving end of a Josh Thomson KO. Although he is more famous for his legal troubles outside the cage, Strebendt once fought out of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu.

Not only was Strebendt an MMA representative of the gym, but he eventually ascended to the role of coach at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, as eight of his nine MMA wins came by way of submission.

2 Shinya Aoki

Typically, MMA favors knockouts for the excitement factor. Shinya Aoki, however, is a dynamic and extraordinary grappler whose incredible array of submissions renders him just as exciting. Armbars, heel hooks, triangles, rear-naked chokes, neck cranks, gogoplatas, and more, all make up his arsenal of submission maneuvers.

This, Aoki owes to his experience training not only in Judo and traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu as well. He was seen rolling with Eddie Bravo himself, with Bravo demonstrating the effectiveness of the lockdown variation of half-guard.
