As soon as Ronda Rousey defeated Liz Carmouche in the first ever UFC women's mixed martial arts fight, women's MMA was immediately on par with the men's divisions. There was something about the intensity that Ronda brought to the cage that succeeded where others before her failed.
Rousey was able to do for women's sport what Laila Ali couldn't do for women's boxing, what the WNBA couldn't do for women's basketball, and what Cyborg and Gina Carano couldn't do for women's MMA. She built women's MMA in the UFC, and since Ronda's been out of the spotlight, the divisions' haven't faltered much.
Just because the crop of female athletes in the UFC are top notch fighters, doesn't mean fans can't appreciate the more aesthetically pleasing aspects of some female combatants. Asking fans to do otherwise is tantamount to asking the impossible. It would be easier to ask MMA fans to ignore highlight-reel quality knockouts.
Making things more difficult is the physical condition these fighters must be in to be the top of their sport. MMA requires a lot of core strength and body types with a high muscle to fat ratio. These physiques tend to make for great athletes and attractive female fighters! Here are 15 female UFC stars who have "not so PG" assets, enjoy!
15 Aleksandra Albu - Glutes For Days
So far Aleksandra Albu is 2-0 in the UFC, but that isn't what makes her so popular. Several videos of her training, stretching, or just posing have gone viral across the internet making Albu famous beyond her MMA experience.
Albu rolled through Kailin Curran at UFC 214, her first fight in nearly two years. Her previous fight had been a submission victory over Izabela Badurek in April of 2015. Her only other pro bout came nearly two years before that at a smaller show in Russia.
14 Felice Herrig - Bikini Body
The "Lil Bulldog" Felice Herrig has won her last three fights in the UFC and isn't far away from possibly earning a title fight in the near future. The 32-year-old is now a veteran of 19 professional fights. Before moving onto MMA, Herrig was a successful kickboxer, she managed a 13-6 pro kickboxing record. Among other things, she's also smoke-show gorgeous.
As for her UFC career, Herrig signed in 2013 and took part in season 20 of the Ultimate Fighter. TUF-20 was the season to crown an inaugural UFC Women's Strawweight Champion. The tournament would eventually be won by Carla Esparza, who would then get obliterated by Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her first title defense.
13 Valentina Shevchenko - Russian Glute God
She might look pretty, but this 29-year-old from Kyrgyzstan can fight with the best of them. Valentina has been a dedicated martial artist her whole life but moved to Thailand early in her career to better immerse herself in the world of MMA.
Shevchenko is 3-1 to start her UFC career, her only loss coming to current champion, Amanda Nunes. She'll have the chance to avenge that loss shortly at UFC 215 in Edmonton. Nunes and Shevchenko were supposed to rematch at UFC 213 in July, but Nunes fell ill with sinusitis shortly before the fight and was forced to drop out.
12 Ashlee Evans-Smith - Chesty Queen
Ashlee "Rebel Girl" Evans-Smith is not someone that everyone will find attractive. Like a fine wine or an aged whiskey, however, those who appreciate Ashlee Evans-Smith do so enthusiastically.
Ashlee made a name for herself in just her second pro bout when she took on a fighter who was causing some controversy at the time. Many fighters were shying away from taking on Fallon Fox, an undefeated female fighter who had been born a man. Several MMA personalities spoke out about how this would provide an advantage for Fox during her fights, though others have disagreed. Ashlee didn't care, she took on Fox when others wouldn't, and she won. She defeated Fox on October 12th, 2013. Ashlee is the first, and so far only, person to defeat Fox.
11 Paige VanZant - "Assets" In Yoga Pants
Paige VanZant does not look like a fighter. She looks like someone who would be a huge hit on Dancing with the Stars. Well, PVZ is both! While only 23, she's starting to become a great fighter as well.
She's lost two of her last three, but her defeats were to arguably the top two fighters in the division not named Joanna. Paige might consider no longer agreeing to fights in the winter, as all three of her losses have come in either December or January. She's 0-3 in those colder months. Meanwhile, she's 7-0 the other ten months of the year.
10 Megan Anderson - Booty, Back & Biceps
Megan Anderson was recently scheduled to take on Cyborg for the inaugural UFC Women's Featherweight Championship, but she had to withdraw from the fight. All that was revealed pertained to Anderson needing to take some time to deal with "personal issues". She's still the Invicta Featherweight Champion. There are now rumors the fight could be rescheduled for the next time the UFC returns to Anderson's native Australia.
9 Julianna Pena - Simply Shredded
The 28-year-old "Venezuelan Vixen" Julianna Pena is a feisty competitor both in and out of the cage.
In late 2015, Pena was arrested and charged with the assault of a bar owner and employee. The incident took place on December 20th, 2015 in Spokane Washington. Pena was with a training partner at the time, who had just been in a street fight and wanted to enter a bar to get cleaned up. The bar owner and employee told the pair the bar was closed which led Pena to go mad with rage. According to witnesses, she kicked both the owner and the employee in the groin. The charges were eventually dropped.
8 Randa Markos - Red & "Not So PG" Cleavage
Training partners of Randa Markos' will note that she leaves a red hair dye stain on the mats every time she trains. The fiery red hair has become part of Markos' appeal, however, and she won't be giving it up anytime soon.
Markos was born in Iraq but moved to Canada as a child. She trains out of TriStar in Montreal but spends most of her time at home in Windsor. She got her first break in the UFC during season 20 of the Ultimate Fighter. She was eliminated by Carlos Esparza in the tournament but would get her revenge on the former champion at a UFC Fight Night event in Halifax back in February.
7 Angela Magana - Rated R Booty
UFC Strawweight Angela "Your Majesty" Magana may have only had two fights in the UFC (she lost both) but she increased her popularity considerably this summer.
Magana is no stranger to speaking poorly of Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino and her past drug test failure. At the UFC Athletes Retreat this summer, Cyborg confronted Magana about it and ended up punching her in the face. Magana threatened legal action and was thrown off of her Alliance MMA team as a result. There have still been no charges officially filed on Cyborg stemming from the incident with Magana this summer.
6 Bec Rawlings - "Not So PG" Fishnet Cleavage
28-year-old Bec Rawlings might not have the best win/loss record in the UFC, but she has a lot of fans who like her alternative approach to fashion and beauty.
The Australian made her MMA debut in 2011 and promptly got KO'd in her first round of action. She rattled off a four fight win-streak after that, however, which earned her a spot on the Ultimate Fighter season 20. Ever since then her record is a lowly three wins and five loses. Her last two defeats came by way of dropping a decision to Tecia Torres in February and getting KO'd by Paige VanZant last summer.
5 Rin Nakai - Bulk "Not So PG"
Rin Nakai is an interesting figure in the world of MMA. Nakai's unique appearance combined with some rather bizarre photo-shoots she has done in Japan, made her one of the most "Not So PG" fighters on the planet.
While she was undefeated when she made her UFC debut in 2014, she dropped her debut fight via unanimous decision to Miesha Tate at UFC Fight Night 52. Nakai wouldn't fight again until UFC Fight Night 85 when she dropped a decision to Leslie Smith. Since returning to Japan and fighting for Pancrase and Rizin, however, she has rattled off three straight wins.
4 Kailin Curran - Shreds & Tats
The 26-year-old Strawweight fights out of Hawaii and has made a bigger name for herself with her appearances outside the octagon than she has her fighting record.
Unfortunately for fans of Curran, she has lost her last three fights. She dropped bouts to Felice Herrig, Jamie Moyle, and most recently Aleksandra Albu at UFC 214. The three straight losses bring her record down to 4-5, and her UFC record to 1-5. If she wasn't so marketable for other reasons, there's a good chance UFC would have cut her by now.
3 Michelle Waterson - Beauty With A Booty
The "Karate Hottie" Michelle Waterson was close to a Strawweight Title shot earlier this year, but a loss to Rose Namajunas derailed those plans. Now the 31-year-old southpaw is looking to get back in the win column to start the climb back up the rankings.
On December 8th, 2014, Waterson lost the Invicta Atomweight Championship but would decide to fight in the UFC instead of lobbying for a rematch with the new champion. Waterson defeated Angela Magana and then Paige Vanzant to skyrocket up the rankings. Her submission defeat via rear-naked choke to Rose Namajunas stopped all of her upward moment, however, and knocked her out of title contention in the process.
2 Rose Namajunas - No Hair, Don't Care
"Thug" Rose Namajunas seems as though she has gone out of her way to make herself unattractive, but things have swayed in the other direction for her.
Namajunas played up her anti-pretty gimmick when taking on Paige VanZant in December of 2015. PVZ had said she was going to shave her head for charity, though the UFC and Reebok stepped in and put a stop to it, so Rose decided she was going to chop all her hair off, and the look ended up working well for her.
Rose made it to the finals of the TUF 20 tournament, only to lose to inaugural Strawweight Champion, Carla Esparza. She rattled off three straight wins after that, including over PVZ, Angela Hill, and an avenged loss to Tecia Torres.
1 Miesha Tate - The Legend
Miesha "Cupcake" Tate is one of the most famous fighters of all-time. Her victory over Holly Holm to win the UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship at UFC 196 will go down as one of the most exciting title fights in history.
Miesha was a famous fighter before female fighters had the opportunities they do today. Even before women's MMA was in the UFC, fight fans were flocking to see Tate fight in Strikeforce.
After two straight losses to Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington respectively, Tate unexpectedly retired. It appears as though after climbing the mountain in her division there wasn't enough motivation to truly keep going.
She currently does some broadcasting for Fox and also has sponsorship deals with NASCAR and Budweiser. When you have all those "Not So PG" assets as you see in the photo above, it isn't too hard to book a gig or two.
