The greats in the NBA make it look so easy. LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, and more were all highly drafted and viewed as potential stars of the league upon their entry. As we later learned, the hype was all earned, as they went on to dominate the league for years.

However, it's not always that easy for every player. While the aforementioned players lived up to their hype, there are multiple draft busts alongside them. In the NBA currently, there are many players that are labeled as draft busts due to their high draft position and expectations, contrasted with their mediocre play.

10 Thon Maker

Thon Maker had high expectations when he was drafted tenth overall in the first round of the 2016 draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. A massive center that dominated high school, and became the first player since 2005, when the "one and done" rule was implemented for college.

Despite the high expectations and draft position, Maker has been a failure in the NBA. He's bounced around from team to team and is now currently playing in the G-League.

9 Stanley Johnson

Stanley Johnson was seen as one of the saviors of the Detroit Pistons when he was drafted eighth overall in the 2015 draft. While his one year at Arizona was solid but unspectacular, it was his physical attributes that excited many fans.

Instead, Johnson has bounced from team to team, failing to prove his worth as a starter. While the Small Forward can be a solid piece off the bench, that's not what you want from someone drafted eighth overall.

8 Jahlil Okafor

Jahlil Okafor is one of the most disappointing recent draft busts. The reason why the third overall pick is so disappointing has to do with the fact that he wasn't always bad. Instead, Okafor's first season in 2015 as a Philadelphia 76er was really, really good. Sadly, the success didn't last for long.

Over time, Okafor began to show his defensive liabilities. Along with that, he suffered several injuries that impacted his offensive ability as well. A liability on both sides of the court, and having injury issues, Okafor is currently looking for a home in the NBA.

7 Josh Jackson

The Pheonix Suns hoped that Josh Jackson would pair with Devin Booker and help lead the team out of their dark despair, and into title contention. To be fair, the latter has done exactly that. Sadly, Jackson had little to no actual impact on it happening.

Jackson had a solid rookie season, but inconsistency and injury problems plagued his career. Within two seasons, he was out of Phoenix and has struggled to stay on an NBA roster ever since.

6 Marvin Bagley III

Marvin Bagley III was drafted second overall in the 2018 draft by the Sacramento Kings. Coming out of Duke, the Power Forward had a lot of potential and was viewed as about as safe as a pick the team could make at the time.

Surprisingly, it didn't turn out. Like Stanley Johnson, Bagley III can be a good player in the right setting and has had success in the NBA. However, for his draft positioning, it has to be disappointing that he doesn't contribute more.

5 Markelle Fultz

Two things can be true at the same time, and it applies to Markelle Fultz perfectly. The Orlando Magic point guard is an average player in the NBA who's had great moments, however, he's also a draft bust.

Fultz has struggled mightily from injury issues and inconsistency. He completely disappears on offense at times, which led him to be kicked out of Philadelphia. While he's alright these days, being drafted first overall holds higher expectations.

4 Jarrett Culver

Jarrett Culver was drafted sixth overall in the first round for the Minnesota Timberwolves. A shooting guard out of Texas Tech, he was electric from mid-range and three-point-range but hasn't shown that same offensive ability in the NBA.

Culver hasn't done much noteworthy at all in the NBA. While other draft busts have had solid moments, the Atlanta Hawks guard hasn't averaged more than 9.2 points a game in a given season, which is horrific for a shooter. While he's always been streaky, Culver hasn't had a noteworthy good streak in the pro ranks.

3 Emmanuel Mudiay

Emmanuel Mudiay headed to the Denver Nuggets in 2015 after being drafted seventh overall in the first round. Unlike other draft busts, the point guard had an interesting path to the league, making it in after playing a few years in China.

Mudiay's play from the professional ranks in China didn't continue over into the NBA. While he's had moments of success, his inconsistent nature, especially on offense, has had him firmly positioned as a role player since 2019.

2 Jonathan Isaac

Jonathan Isaac is interesting in that, he hasn't been terrible when on the court for the Orlando Magic in 2017. Having been drafted sixth overall in the first round, the small forward was seemingly putting things together, albeit, slowly.

However, due to injuries, Isaac will likely go down as a draft bust. The Orlando Magic star hasn't played since 2020 due to multiple season-ending injuries, which is a shame, especially because Isaac appeared to be hitting his stride prior to 2020.

1 Frank Ntilikina

NBA: Houston Rockets at Dallas Mavericks

Frank Ntilikina was expected to be the point guard who could help restore the New York Knicks to a place of respectability. Having been drafted eighth overall in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft, expectations were high for the French player.

Sadly, he's failed to live up to those expectations. Ntilikina has been basically invisible on offense when entering the league and is now a Dallas Mavericks bench player.
